LOL she's definitely touched
I am not really clear on what she is trying to do, its obviously not a bite dog, there is no scent discrimination going on (ie HRD/ contraband), or any other work that I can see. She seems to be using the dog's reward to train some sort of possessiveness in the dog.
In my experience the reward is given on the find, and only on the find not to used for anything else.
In this video (3rd down on the page) we see Colin developing intensity (building drive) through a combination of verbal encouragement and a food reward at the find, this is only done on the find. The food reward for this dog was pork liver, some of the dogs are trained with a toy for a reward.

I think she's nuts...and if she struck my dog in the face like she does (1:23-1:25) I'd be out of my chair and having words.
Who uses their leash as a toy.....that is just asking for 'bad' dog behavior in the first place.
I think people are missing the point. Using the leash like that is to make her point, and she's not really hitting her dog..lol
Either that, or I missed the point..LOL
Yes she slaps the dog..you can hear it...
Now I may take it back that it is a leash/lead....on second look it may be in fact that dogs toy, that looks like a lead...still not the smartest thing to do either.
She's making a claim that the worst trainers ("ever notice how bad trainers have high drive dogs?") have high drive dogs. She goes into hysterics to get her dog to show more drive by yelling, slapping, and getting worked up to show how high the drive is in her dog when she acts like an idiot, or a "bad trainer".
She does this demonstration in what appears to be a dog training class. I doubt she's beating the piss out of that poor beast right there in front of everyone to get her point across..lol.
That was the message I got anyway. I thought she was quite the actress. :)
Neat....
The whole thing was supposed to be a joke.
BADA BING!
Just wait for the next vid ....! I see Ugo is still trying to catch his breath after this one..
Now you see. We all are so nice here that we didn't risk telling you the video was full of @#$%^&* in case you were serious about it. Dog people are fine people. :)
Yes, it's all a big game (reward) as far as the dog is concerned. She was trying to act like a crazy person getting upset when their dog doesn't do what they want it to (even though she actually has full control since the dog appears to be well trained).
I thought at least somebody might get a chuckle out of that drama although I didn't expect it to effect everyone like it did Ugo..
If that was for demonstration impact, I think there are better ways to achieve your purpose. Her basic premise is totally flawed when it comes to field dogs. Saying high drive dogs have bad trainers is probably one of the most inaccurate(stupid) things I've heard. In fact trainers with high drive dogs need to be very skilled.
Lost my head. Sorry.
Anyone who knows anything about Susan Garrett and her training, accomplishments and her brand knows she is one of the worlds best ( we're not talking hunting/field here folks obviously) when it comes to competitive dog sports like agility, obedience etc. - she's top notch in her areas of expertise, though many of her applications can be applied to household average pets and hunting conpanions for building a strong bond and developing a team ( not tug related, but watch het videos on youtube, old and new).
You wouldn't believe the number of bad dog trainers out there ( ha - both professionally and rgular pet owners). So much potential in some dogs and yet trainer just plain sucks, LOL. I see it all the time at our dog club. And so many dogs with 'drive' and placed with the wrong owner, too much dog and not enough owner.
My dog loves cheese.
Susan Garrett has forgot more about dog training than most people on this forum know. Her field of choice is agility and she has won the worlds on several occasions and has represented Canada on the world stage. To be a good trainer you need to be open to listen to others not only in the dog field but other animals such as horses. You never stop learning. It is easy to come on a forum and claim knowledge I don't know to many trainers of field dogs who have not corrected their dogs in a harsh manner at one point in their training career myself included. There is way worse going on , on a regular basis. What is implied in the video is the trainer does not have the knowledge to properly train a high powered dog. The owner wants a fire breather but when they get one they realize they do not know what to do or how to handle the dog. which leads to bad dog trainers. I would love to spend some time with Susan to see her outlook of the field training She only live a mile from me I should go knock on her door.
