Truth be told Terry I don't mind this.
Fact: they need the cash. We have known for YEARS where things were heading. Well some did anyways. Funny thing about obviously corrupt admins and inept ones...things tend to blow up......
Fact: they, their friends (unions) and those who support them. Didn't want to listen. Not to common sense, not to Drummond, not to Moody's in 2011. Not to Moody's last May just before the election, and I suspect even now there are still some despite SP and Fitch and even more stuff.
Fact: they refuse to do the hard things. Cut spending, reduce overhead. There are many who refused to see. Voted for them.
Fact: they ignored infrastructure and other things for years, in favour of....that has hampered the recovery (jobs, economic growth). We Need that, THEY need that, unfortunately there's no $$. Why?
This is needed.
The reasons it's needed are another story. At least this will be "optional". Yeah it might grid lock/congest major arteries. Still optional and at the least, many of their friends in the golden TA will be the ones sharing the pain at least a little. I don't ever recall seeing HOV lanes in rural ontario
Welcome to Ontario. No one can say they weren't warned, didn't have a couple chances starting in 2011. Haven't had ample evidence be it Hydro, having to sell Hydro one, raise income tax, "ORPP" and taxing the working stiffs/companies only, raise other fees, traffic tickets, and on and on.

Whatever happened to pay-for-use spending/thinking.
I don't mean charge the shyte out of drivers for driving. I mean spend the money collected from say vehicle permits on roads and bridges. Our plate renewals (esp in southern Ontario) keep going up, up up, now they want to charge tolls? I would hope that at least the tolls can be low like the Interstates in NY and not ridiculous like the 407.
Charge the mass transit commuters the true cost to run and expand mass transit, why should we (those living outside of Toronto) subsidize mass transit?
Use hunting and fishing revenue to put gas in the COs truck.
Hey fishy wishy. I like the idea that Torontonians should subsidize their own mass transit. Let's take it one step further and say that Toronto should keep all of the tax revenue it generates. Most of the rest of the province would be back to dirt roads in no time. Good plan.Quote:

Basically removing 20 or 25% of usable traffic lanes in high density areas is beyond crass. These roads are already insufficient to handle the volume that will only increase. It's not that simple. Don't get me wong here, I hate Wynne and the people who live off her and support her and most of them are Citiots. But reality is there is no value in growing the trees and logging them or growing the crops unless there is a market to buy it. And to further complicate it to be competitive you need to produce it in mass quantities to reap the economies of scale. Guys growing apples in Collingwood now compete with China. Fruits & vegetables come from California and South America. We import meat from New Zealand. Hydro can be imported from Quebec cheaper than we produce it. The family farm died for a reason. Toronto is the market and as distasteful as it is to admit they don't need the rest of Ontario as much as it needs Toronto. There is a reason why wealth is concentrated in urban centers all over the globe, basic economics at play here. Don't shoot the messenger here, he hates Toronto too.Quote:

Just as with Greece (no Im not drawing a direct parallel) we should probably expect somewhere down the road steep austerity measures as well. Eventually common sense should prevail and these clowns and their bed fellows will get the boot.
And thats when it really catches up to people. Lets hope between now and then, things don't get any worse (recessions, world events, Interest rates, housing markets/crashes and more)…And lets hope between now and then, people start looking down the road 5-10-20years….
The QEW from Oakville to the 427 is 3 lanes each direction. They would be removing 33% of the useable lanes. Add to that the fact that 90% of the commercial drivers on the roads today get out onto the highway and plant themselves in the second lane because it's too much work to allow for traffic merging in from the right + the fact that the trucks they drive are governed to 105 = no passing when you get stuck behind two of them running side by side for miles. The time people will be stuck, sitting in traffic, idling and spewing out emissions is going to increase - how does that fit with all their GREEN policies?Quote:

I mentioned earlier one unintended consequence of this will be more congestion/grid lock.
How does that help companies and businesses trying to move goods through the GTA and the 401 (the busiest highway in NA)

Living in the city, I've always been a fan of toll roads entering the city. What they should do is take those HOV lanes and make trucks HAVE to use them between the hours of 8am and 6pm. That will make traffic move MUCH quicker. 3 trucks spread out across 3 lanes in stop and go traffic on the 400 highways makes me crazy. By the time they get rolling, I could have been another kilometre down the road.
