Recently went through your experience. Last summer had to replace the 2004 Envoy with something new. If they still had the envoy would of bought a new one however model discontinued. What they have now seemed kind of under whelming. None are built on a truck frame anymore. 4 wheel drive is no longer a manual select option and not convinced fully on demand was the way to go and none run high enough off the ground. Ended up with a Jeep Wrangler go figure.
I had the Dodge caravan, it chewed through front brakes and was not good on gas. I now have a chev suburban with 5.3 and it has been much better all around.
From a price point..... I don't think you can beat the dodge caravan...Everything you need for the family and will still meet your outdoor needs.
agree with fratri on this one, you cant beat the grand caravan. also the front brakes on the newer models dont have the issues the older ones did as mentioned by marker.
Went the same route and looked at the jeep cherokee, ford escape, dodge journey and bought a kia sorento. I know it is a grocery getter but it is awd , seats 7 and can tow 3500 pounds. Also wife has a grand caravan and it is the perfect vechicle with kids. Had to replace the front brake at 55k but wife is hard on them... No kids and I would buy a truck...f150. But the caravan is the best bang for your buck....
I looked at similar options last year and ended up with a mini-van. Your gear and dog stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter... and the family to...
I really wanted an AWD/4X4 option but settled on cargo space, fuel economy and cost of the vehicle i.e. factory rebate.
RB
Get something with 4x4
I am not sure any of the ones you talked about are suv more like a van or crossover ,,I like the Subaru outlander or outback ...The 2015 outback is a midsized suv with awd ,,,sweet ride ,,Dutch
I almost bought a Ford Escape, the a buddy showed me his Outback. Wow, what a great car when comparing it to the Escape. It has more storage room in the back, has the highest ground clearance of any vehicle, including Jeep. plus lots of other great stuff. I bought a 2011 Outback with the 3.6 engine, and get about 9L/100. Not too bad. Some call it a car, others call it a SUV, I call it a station wagon.
Snow ? Went to the hunt camp last winter with a buddy who has a F150 4x4 and he wouldn't drive in as he thought the snow was too deep. I took him in the passenger seat of my outback. He was impressed. In the fall he is going to trade in his truck for an Outback, and also get a trailer to haul the big stuff.
I hope that this helps you.
First, you need to determine what the weight of any towed vehicle will be and, secondly, how much heavy duty use it will need to handle. Standard smaller sized SUV's are excellent for run-abouts with the family and the odd outdoors excursions, but, will never stand up to continued heavy duty use. You can't drive a spike with a tack hammer.
That is the setup most people would be best with. An AWD suv with a utility trailer for the few times you need to haul bigger loads. Towing with fwd minivans is not the best tool. Get into any kind of an accident while towing more than the vehicles rating and your insurance company will fry you.
I was in the same situation with the wife's car. We looked at Dodge Journey, outlander or vw Touareg diesel. And my wife fell in love with the Touareg. To be honest, service cost a lot but it tows my boat with no issues. But if it wasn't the Touareg then I would of been the Outlander- can fit 7 ppl. So a lot room for ppl and gear.
