New to Fly Fishing

Hello everyone,
I am wanting to get into fly fishing as I have a lot of little creaks and streams around my house that are full, of trout in the spring and the salmon in the fall. I have used my ultra light spinning really up until now and I decided that I want a fly rod, but do NOT want to break the bank. My parents are going to visit family in Vaughan on Wednesday and going to Bass Pro and the mall there. I have been looking at the Bass Pro website and seen a couple of budget friendly fly outfits listed. I was just wondering your guys input on buying a White River Fly Shop DogWood Canyon rod, and also A Redington Crosswater outfit. I dont have a loy of money and both of these setups are under 200. I would use these for a year and get new if these are good to start with?

I picked up a cheapo rod and reel set up when I was getting started and it worked just fine for a few years.

You're better off sizing the rod to the fish you want to catch and getting a couple lessons along the way.

Trying to target larger fish or more importantly throw larger flies than your rod is sized for can cause you issues with your casting and will lead to frustration.

If you are targeting trout and salmon I would use a middle of the road rod size wise, which would end up being a bit heavy for trout and a bit light for salmon but it's the only thing you can do unless you start buying multiple setups.

The trout I am targeting weigh up to 10 pounds and the salmon are anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds. What is an appropriate size for this? I was thinking like a 8 wt rod. I will be targeting the trout more then the salmon though. I already have a decent spinning rod and reel for the salmon, I just thought it might be fun to use with the salmon, and catch them on the fly. So now I guess that question is, What is the appropriate size wt for a trout rod, and reel?

Won't break the bank and should work decently for what your looking at ....and Canadian Tire is just around the corner .

If you want to fish big salmon, you will need a minimum 7 wt. I would probably go with an 8 wt. Keep an eye on kijiji...you can get decent used setups for less than $200.

What wt do I need for smaller trout? like a 8 pound trout on what size rod? 6wt?

If you are targeting 8-10 pound trout and 20 pound salmon a 7 or 8wt rod set up should do you just fine. You may have to play the salmon for a little bit, but that's not the end of the world. Good luck.

For smaller fish a 5wt is perfect. You might find it a bit easier to learn how to cast with over the heavier rods.

7/8 wt is a good place to start for salmon/steelhead. I used a 8 wt. in the southern ontario tribs when I first started out, worked well for close to 10 yrs. a 7/8 wt. will also double as a good bass rod in the summer. Personally I would go with the redington setup. They make good rods and reels, might last you a bit longer. Good luck and tight lines

I wouldn't call an 8lber a small trout...8 incher maybe.

Last year I picked up an 8wt fenwick from Canadiantire I managed to bring in a 28lb salmon with the rod, I had to play the fish a bit more as it was taking the rod through its paces. But that being said the rod handled fish in the 10-20lb range with ease and all in all very impressed for it being a 100$ rod.
