Lets poke the bear...

In a recent thread found here we saw a really nice discussion of terminology and euphemisms develop.
Personally I use the term hunt. However, I am not a hunter, in that it isn't my profession. Just like I won't call myself a golfer because my handicap matches my waist size...+38. But I love hunting! Even if the season is way to short in my opinion. (Theres a subject for another day)
After the aforementioned thread I did some research and found that the term "harvest" is being used more and more in place of hunt. Even the NRA is jumping on that bandwagon. Do I hunt deer or "harvest" deer. Am I hunting or "harvesting?" Where did this term come from and why?
My thinking is that we have that term for two reasons. There may be more.
One is to reflect responsible hunting. Your "bag limit" depending on where you live can be 1, 2 or more. It reflects a responsible use of the game that was just killed by you the hunter. (Yes, hunter. You hunt game, you harvest corn...) Its not like hunting so you can mount some head down in your "man-cave"(another term that makes my skin crawl) and brag about it over single malt with your "buddies" to show how better your are they them.
Another reason for using the term "harvest" is to soften the implications of hunting to the populous. Gives them that warm fuzzy feeling. "Harvest," they ask? Then we have an opportunity to explain what we do and why. (Personally, I find this annoying because what we do is far more ethical that what the food industry does to feed the masses. "Veal" Enough said.)
So, hunt or harvest?

Can go either way for me. Days I don't kill anything well I was definitely hunting. Days I come home with dinner and in company that may not embrace a more hands on approach to gathering food stuffs could call it harvesting.
Days like this one its just easier saying harvesting wild stuff.

As I have said before. Hunt kill eat. It sounds to me like there is a lot of navel gazing in that thread. I am from a a large city and I just want to convey to you my fellow hunters in the countryside. City dwellers do not give a pinch of you know what when it comes to hunting. They are way more interested in cars vacations and new green eggs (preferably larger than the neighbours'). How many of us have been questioned about hunting by urbanites? I would wager very few. Ok start jumping on me! Cheers.

feel less silly saying harvesting wild stuff than hunting mushrooms.

Fins I am a horticulturalist and it is my expert opinion that you slaughtered that mushroom. You essentially decapitated it from the rest of its living cell structure. It lives no more but you are going to eat all that food and you are going to enjoy it ( I'm envious and don't have dinner plans ) and well you should. You are living man!

Depends on the circle of friends. I too live in the big city and most of my friends ask when they can come along. However my wife's circle of friends are a different story. University educated and very opinionated bunch of vegans. When it was found out that I hunt and that I come from a long line of hunters they looked the other way figuring it was just a phase in my life. I now use the word hunt to rattle them all. LOL!

Do you fear that your vegan friends are going to engage politicians to put an end to legal hunting? They may look down their collective nose at you but just make sure that you don't try to build a bigger house next door to them. Then you will have a problem. Lol. Cheers.

What does not being your profession have to do with shying away from using the term hunter?

If it was your profession you'd be a "Professional Hunter"

The rest of us can still correctly be called hunters. If you termed me a "harvester" I would say "no, im a hunter"

I'm a hunter, I hunt. No other words for me....

The word 'harvest" to me is for farmers and their crops....

Hunter / Gatherer = Yes
Harvester / Gather = NO

Not in my experience. I find people roll their eyes at that one, because they recognize it as rhetoric.

Pretty much. Ive never met an actual hunter who used the term harvest. I have never hid what I do.

Trying to hide or "soften" what hunting is is pointless. Anti-hunters dont care. Hunting is hunting is hunting, to both us and them (obviously different ends of the spectrum) and theres no middle ground. To those on the fence or neutral about it being honest is the best thing to do.

If you look up the definition of hunter you will find

No where in the definition is killing something. You'll find words like pursue, search, capture. So while you are looking for game your a hunter once its dead well what than. Got no problem saying I'm a hunter and as such am able to harvest from the wild.

Running to the dictionary won't help you here. Firstly, because the dictionary definition of "harvest" certainly does not apply, because game animals are not cultivated plants. Secondly, because dictionaries do not prescribe meaning; they describe it, and often weakly, since they usually address only the denotative and not the connotative meanings of words.

To hunt an animal carries the connotation of killing it; the very dictionary you drew your definition from defines "hunt" as "pursue for food," and presumably we do not intend to eat animals alive.

But if you really, really want to talk about definitions, I've got a Compact OED on the shelf behind me. I'll bet the word "hunt" gets about a full page in that thing.

Well the governing body for hunting in the province, the MNR, requires us to fill out a Hunter Activity and a Harvest Report...

You shot a bear you are required fill out a Harvest report.....

For the controlled Deer hunt you must fill out a Harvest Report....

etc etc..

They have a separate questionnaire to cover the Hunting Activities.

The 'Harvest' report covers the kill aspect of the hunt!!!

Then for those of us who may not have had a very good harvest on the deer crop in November, we can try our luck again in muzzle loading harvesting season.By then I hope my hounds are in shape and I can start coyote harvesting.

Hey mr boiler poked the bear. I agree. It's old already.

Personally I really do not care what anybody calls it.And if someone feels better or feels they have to sugar coat it for some reason , so be it.It is after all their own free choice. In all my years of hunting though, I have never been asked, are you going moose harvesting this year? Or, did you make it out bow harvesting at all? Just saying.....

Well then why not tell it like it is bushman, why hide behind a nice euphemism like 'Hunting'..be honest, your killing and slaughtering wildlife :)

I just did that for some fun and entertainment MikePal,and then posted another right after,expressing my thoughts on it.In reality ,most hunters like you ,me and many more probably use the term hunt or hunting not, harvest or harvesting. And I personally do not, nor do I even like hearing kill, killed or killing used in a hunting story.That being said, how often do we hear or use the phrases, killing chickens tomorrow? Will you help me kill a beef? Couple pigs I have to kill soon? The end result is the same though, no matter what we call it.

Although I don't use the term 'harvest', I do tend to substitute the word 'kill' with 'take' when describing a hunt to a non hunter. Jimmy Kimmel may disagree.

When I go hunting..... I am looking for something to kill (harvest).... Once the hunt is over and I killed the animal, technically I harvested it from the area......... so I guess in-fact I am doing both.... I am hunting an animal so I can harvest it from the land.... :)
I guess depending on the crowd I would and do substitute the word kill with harvest or more often with taken.......................... but always with pride.

Kind of like harvest moon and hunters moon. Close but not the same thing...

That's it....and why the MNR calls it a 'Harvest' Report.

I can hunt all day and not kill anything and have a good hunt. There are people who hunt all fall and never kill a thing. I agree with lowbanksarcher and fratri that once an animal is shot it has been harvested or killed depending on the company.

I see harvest being used more often to replace the word kill. So instead of saying i killed a deer, you say i harvested a deer. Its just a nicer way of saying "killed". In all cases you are a hunter.

i believe it is to soften the * kill * for the populace as you have said... the ART of hunting is not a popular term and therefore Harvesting animals or wildlife ( fiddleheads, mushrooms , etc...) is a more political term that everyone will more accept than hunting.. mind you in my opinion is the same description only in other words...

So I suppose meat on trays at grocery stores is "pre-harvested"? Seriously, I can at least respect the position of a vegan, they have a belief and (sometimes) hold to it. The meat-eating anti-hunter is the ultimate hypocrite. Just because they don't pull the trigger themselves does not mean they are not responsible for killing loads of animals every year. Probably more so than hunters. They don't seem to realize that animals have to be killed so that they can sit down to a steak dinner or have bacon and eggs on weekend mornings. At least we can own up to the fact that yes, we kill animals and yes, we eat what we kill. We're also far less likely to feed the leftovers to the dog or throw it out because of the time and effort involved to put it on our plates.

The next time you feel like you have to explain yourself to a non-hunter or an anti, just ask if they eat meat. If the answer is yes, they shouldn't have much leverage in the debate on their end.

Well putGW11. I used to be more willing to speak up about hunting in the big city. I got into it one day with a neighbour who termed hunting " anti spiritual " . Now im not the brightest guy in the world but i did find the comment both ignorant and insulting. I asked him how spiritual an experience it was to line up at no frills for mass produced and mass slaughtered chicken. Since those days i have really stopped sharing my views with people who are not like minded. I just dont see how you are going to enlighten anyone and many times you just end up defending yourself from unreasonable and ignorant points of view. Just my two cents. Cheers.

I'm a HUNTER always have been always will be! Harvest is a word to pacify the antis and I will NOT bow down to those IDIOTS...I do not harvest and animal i KILL an animal and what i KILL i eat! If the antis don't like it tough !

I think the reality is that most people who are anti-hunting think hunters go out, find an animal and kill it for the thrill, not the meat. Then they cut the head off for a trophy leaving the carcass behind, and boast to their mates about the huge buck they 'took'. Or a wolf or a bear or a lion. Take your pick.

People who are against that type of behaviour aren't 'anti-hunting'...they are anti random killing. I'm in that camp. I don't get the point of just killing stuff. It seems borderline psychotic to me to fly to Africa just to kill an Apex predator or an elephant that nobody is going to eat. Apex predators, endangered or at risk species...seeing people kill them just to kill them is very hard to rationalize.

With that being said I have loads of friends who hunt for food, and I support that 100%. What's the difference between that and letting a farmer sell his cow to a meat processor who kills it , sells it to longo's and then someone buys it to make a steak? No difference. Conceptually. Reality is that it's a better life for the wild hunted animal.

Unfortunately most people think all hunters are in group 1. The 'I want to kill stuff because I like killing stuff' camp.

P. S. For the OP a +38 handicap would actually be insanely good. Impossible actually. Any '+' handicap is better than scratch :)

Makes sense. Majority of people are sensible.

I think the Gray area is where we define legal. Killing a timber wolf in Alberta is legal with a wolf tag. I'd love to see that end though because I think it makes no sense.

If enough people feel that way the definition of legal will evolve. Same goes for killing a lion etc. Should that be legal? I don't think so. Of course then we have to run down a slippery slope...who is the arbiter of what is right and wrong? Is a lion more valuable than a coyote?

Tough. I think apex predators and endangered species though...what's the point?

True, and although public support for hunting for meat is up around 80%, it declines to around 25% when you start talking about trophy hunting. Of course, you get some difficulty in defining "trophy hunting"; someone who shoots a nice buck and gets the head mounted but still eats the meat might or might not be a trophy hunter, depending on your point of view. Most people wouldn't see a coyote hunter as a trophy hunter, but a lot of people still balk at shooting them.

So when you look at such things as.

Coyotes
Deer Culls
Cormorants
Spring Bear hunts
Cancellation of the Sportman Show
COs who can't adequately cover an area the size of a small country, let alone Ontario
The MoE's and the MNRs budget ( lowest priority)
That politicians do what they think the voters want and not whats right or necessary.

One has to wonder if the people of Ontario actually supporting hunting or not

According to the rcmp about 4300 per 100000 people in Ontario have a pal. So that's about 4 percent of ontarians. Of that four percent lets speculate and say that one of that four percent are target shooters etc and don't hunt and that maybe another one of that four percent has a pal but doesn't hunt. So we will speculate that roughly two percent of ontarians actually hunt. When you look at the numbers jben it just doesn't look like much of a priority at the provincial level. It affects us and we talk about this activity that interests us but I just don't think that many people outside of our hunting community could really care. I think that's what the number is saying. In my opinion this is a stupid question - I tell you later why - but since you asked - I am a hunter.
And the reason I say that is because when I say "I hunt", everybody understands the meaning of the word. If you say you are a harvester, not only you mingle with the wrong crowd, but you have too much time for silly things....

If you would try to put this in a global/historical perspective, you would laugh your a...s off. Replacing hunting with harvesting in several other languages around the globe to describe the most ancient human occupation (I might ignite a serious argument here with those in support of prostitution being the oldest - and I don't necessarily oppose the concept), you would realize how silly that would sound. I come from a line of hunters and the way I remember them they would laugh their a...s off right now and would probably make stupid jokes over all this.

No doubt. As an example, in Quebec ( that large body of land surrounded by the rest of Canada) you won't find the word harvest on their website. Main reason is that they translate the regulations from French into English. So where you would think you'd find harvest they use kill. Actually they have two words for kill. Tuer and abattre. Depends on what is being described. So to translate harvest in the context we use, many languages don't have a word for it. The default word would be "kill." So really what should be asked isn't so much "do you hunt or harvest" but "do you kill or harvest?"
Personally, I kill everything from squirrel to moose. However in today's society to those faint of heart and lacking intestinal fortitude I say I harvest. Then I sit back and watch their cerebral gears jam and their heads explode.

That comment was not aimed at you but more of a general statement. It's funny how people can be about it sometimes. I've seen guys more or less apologize for being a hunter when in certain company.

The only time I have ever really laid out an explanation was when (unbeknownst to me) my hunting was beginning to drive a wedge between our closest friends and my wife and I. They (our friends) had been taking gradual steps to give up meat and eventually even join PETA. As it turns out they were just completely clueless and ignorant when it came to the facts about hunters and hunting. They truly thought all hunters killed for nothing but the thrill and left all but the trophy to rot. They even believed that we must hate animals to be able to kill them.

After a few lengthy discussions they came to understand my side of things, went back to eating meat and even learned to fish and taught their kids to as well. If they lived closer to us I expect I would even be introducing the husband to hunting. I'm sure that it rarely turns out that way but that one particular example was a small win for us hunters I think.

They truly thought all hunters killed for nothing but the thrill and left all but the trophy to rot. They even believed that we must hate animals to be able to kill them.

After a few lengthy discussions they came to understand my side of things, went back to eating meat and even learned to fish and taught their kids to as well. If they lived closer to us I expect I would even be introducing the husband to hunting. I'm sure that it rarely turns out that way but that one particular example was a small win for us hunters I think.

I think I just shed a tear... Nice story! That's what I've gone thru numerous times. I'm sure we've all been there..

I have also heard hunters say that they "took" or "got" a nice buck last night. Not saying that is any better/worse but just shows the different lingo that is being used today.

"Take" has been around for a long, long time. So has "get," less formally.

Take sounds like it was developed by someone someone who doesn't want to say kill out loud

Don't forget 'got'..as "EwwEee..hey look Pa..I got me a bear " ...LOL...

And there you have it. A neat little phrase that you'd think we could have fun with but "they" beat us to it. Now it bears the taste of contempt.
With all the political correctness crap and not wanting to offend people and feeling like we're having to tippy toe around our words this society is really starting to blow chunks.

After 8 pages, I imagine this "harvest" concept has been beaten to death. My two cents is: I go hunting and I "get" or "bag" a grouse, a duck or a turkey. I have never referred to it as a "harvest", and never will despite the MNR's use of "Harvest Report".

The only situation that I can see that may be justified using "harvest" might be when hunting over bait.

Ok hunting over bait....Yup do it for bear, deer, Raccoons, maybe even ducks, geese, coyotes, crows, squirrels, and so on.

Also what do you consider bait, a pile of corn, a feeder full of dog food, peanuts in a tree hollow, a planted field of alalfa, a E-caller and decoy, hand calls and decoys?
