Help needed - suggestions for a camera thief

HELLO GUYS

I need some suggestions I have had a bear barrel taken. It was replaced. we hung a camera in a steel box with a cable lock. The tree was cut down with an axe. camera, box, solar panel and the entire tree is gone. the 2 bear sprayers were removed and smashed to bits and left for us to see. then they pounded on the barrel with an axe trying to get the lock off. the only consolation I have - their axe is pooched. There is a monster bear there so I don't want to give in. I'm on crown land miles from the nearest building. there is no cellular service there. I'm willing to buy another couple cameras because I will catch these anti-hunters and payback is a .

any suggestions on a camera that will work. I will monitor the parking spot and the baitsite. I want a licence plate and a face to go with it.. I will find them!

these people/person left stuff behind and I know they will be back ... it will be priceless to see their faces when they see me!

Geez - sorry for your luck Skeeter. I can't think of anything more you could've done for security. I would suggest putting the next camera up high where it can't be spotted. If you've got any old cameras that don't work, put them out as the decoys.

if I had cell service I would by a cellular unit.

I'd have their pic on my email before they could tamper with it.

I don't care about the camera because when I confront them they will be paying for all and everything!

these people need to be taught a lesson. it would be good for all hunters to make an example of them so that the word would get around!

my old man still doesn't believe in cameras. he rather spends weeks in stands. no way, I would be able to, but honestly he knows more about game movement than any camera would ever capture (wonder if he's wiser to spend the time out there than me at work and the www)
if you are determined, get out soon. stay away form the actual site and monitor the access routes, chances are they are proud of what they did and will come back for more... (they likely more willing to take extra effort; if there is another road going in with a longer hike no problem - they know that it's going to pay off in their weird minds)
if you have talked to anyone about your bait site in the past month or two, do it again (you never know if they coincidentally discovered it or were informed by someone)

Spy point has cameras where the picture is sent to a black box 250-500 feet away. So they can take the camera and as long as they don't find the black box you've got them. Hope you catch them!

Sorry to hear you have some creeps messing and destroying your stuff..

I'm curious as to why you figure they're anti-hunters....sounds like the location etc would lead to the fact it was another hunter that is wanting to destroy your bait site.

We have a guy in Ottawa on Crown that thinks he owns a whole swath of land. Scary guy and maybe that i swhat is happening. First time you hunted the area? Maybe it is "his", that much damage would suggest anti hunter or some guy thinks he owns the site??? SOrry to hear none the less, and I hope you get him and turn him into police, plus notify MNR and have another charge of interferring with a legal hunt.

I hope you get him....just make sure you keep your cool, I don't want to see you get in trouble....that spy point camera sounds like what you might need

I'm pretty sure this incident would not qualify for those charges? Theft? Vandalism? yes, but since Sk33t3r was'nt actually on site and hunting at the time?

Yup... and he also has claimed an area just off E6 as well to, posted signs as well. Checked the leased land portion of Marborough Forrest Management Plan and that area is not leased. One lease off E4 that covers 3 parcels where I grouse hunt.He has been there a long time, and my FIL (North Gower) says he had problems with him 10 years ago as well.

Spypoint Tiny 7 on sale at BP right now for 180. It has the camera unit and a black box you keep 200 ft away that records the images. They might keep the camera but you would get an image recorded of the act.

I have one for a ridge watch I have so I can leave it alone. haven't set it up yet though. Good luck.

I would also suggest putting the cameras high up angle down to make them difficult to see and hopefully catch them looking up at them.

I will get a face and a licence plate to put the identity and the face together.

if they have a cottage around there and they laugh at me then I will let the bears get even with them.

ever see what a bear will do to a cottage!

Spy point with the black box. Put real good batteries in it though as it uses them a little quicker. You can put the black box in a hole and cover with leaves or in a stump or where ever you think it will be safe. Set up some dummy cameras to lure them to hang around for some good pictures.

I suggest you report the mischief to private property to the nearest police detachment,get an incident/occurrence number and report to the MNR office the incident and quote the police report number.
Being old school is fine but will get you nothing with this type of character.

The evidence you get from any camera will have to be handed over to the police in any eventuality if you hope for charges and or compensation.If you have decided to handle this yourself dont be suprised if the bad guy calls the police and you end up in cuffs.

cuffs me in cuffs! the real threat is when I get out and the cuffs are off! When dealing with someone as ignorant as those people that did this. if someone unprovoked punches me in the mouth there will be a lot more blood before it's over. I might even lose but they will know they've been in a battle! and over what - a camera?

it's goes deeper then just a camera. If they're stupid enough to come back a third time then they really are stupid. The lesson they'll get will be remembered for a long time! and it might help them make smarter decisions in the future!

Put a fake camera up and hide your real on high in the tree pointing at the fake camera. Bing you will have him red handed

Doesn't seem like a hunter to me. If I really wanted to screw the bait owner (you in this case) I would just let him keep doing all the work and then set up a stand to cut off the bait site. It is crown land.

Good luck with it Skeeter. I kinda doubt they'd be stupid enough to try a third time, specially knowing that you will be super prepared this time. But hopefully though you'll get lucky and they will be that greedy. :)

Maybe you yourself are not actually in a position to obtain a great deal of help from either the police or the MNR. As this is on Crown Land are you allowed to leave your set up there over the 21 days.If you did perhaps these law breakers saw you as being another
law breaker.I think you are taking a very big chance thinking you might confront these guys in an isolated place and not risk your life.
There is a right way and a wrong way of doing things and you are chosing the wrong way IMHO.
If you are legally placed you need to notify the police and make a report,that way if the s really hits the fan,you can at least say you made an effort,otherwise you look like a vigilante.

However, according to your statement the later does not apply, because you're far away from anyone. It's not only hunters who have an interest to be far away from anyone. As stated earlier, a hunter should have taken advantage of the situation rather than discouraging you to continue baiting.

There are quite some horror stories of what you could unknowingly get into.

I know there is a lot of grey area that I'm treading into but how many times do we "sportsmen" have to take the high road and walk away with our tails tucked. I've been at this spot over 10 yrs probably longer. Gilroy says I might be risking harm to even myself. But I think the element of surprise is mine. Usually gutless people who did what they did are not tough individuals. When they are confronted they fold up like a cheap suit and beg for forgiveness. Why risk a criminal record which they might end up with depending on how far this goes. And they have never faced someone like me. Even wackos fear someone wackier then them.

We will see ... this happened over the Aug civic weekend as far as I can figure. Maybe they're just up there camping and won't be back till next year or never. Either way I will be prepped next week and also for next Aug. I feel sorry for the next vandalizer because he will take the wrath for his and the previous guys/gals!

can you go with another provider for cell service, dummy cams or spy point has a camera that has a box you can hide upto 50 feet away and transmitts pics to it.. good luck and keep us posted, sounds like some guy is pissed you are setup to close to him. i have guy that thinks all deer are his and trespasses on private property to screw with my cams stands etc. i set up a cam on a dummy cam and nailed him!

What general area is this happening in. I would imagine it would be young punks or a hippie tree hugger. Who would use an axe. Most local thieves around my hunting grounds would have a chainsaw and be in and out in minutes.

I figure the same probably punks up there camping for the weekend. all the had was an axe. me? I got 3 chainsaws. if I needed a camera that bad I would take it and a 1/2 cord of wood! will they be back next aug 1 long weekend?

but I went to BASS pro and got a spypoint tiny wbf this morning and after the old camera trade-in it was $179! WOW! SAIL has them for $349. I called SAIL asking if they had any they had 3 left. I asked if they price matched. Salesman said ABSOLUTELY YES! I said good I will be coming for a couple. I have my BASS pro bill $179 $203 all taxes in. Salemans was choking on the other end. said no-way! made me read him the bar code. yup same camera! he had to check with his manager. Manager said he couldn't -- I asked again do you price match? he said yes! I said obviously NOT! He said he can price match on anything else but not this! So there's price match and then there's price match with conditions. I told him I have never been to a SAIL store and now my first visit is tainted! I told him to keep his cameras and take me off the mailing list!

I actually had Sail match a gun shop in Peterborough just off a website price. Got $300 off the price of a new Citori White Lightning. So they do some price matching. Good luck with damned crooks, hope ya catch them. Thats why I stopped using game cams years ago.

playing devils advocate can't really knock sail for not price matching. Seeing how the price was based on a camera trade in can't expect them to match the price with out one at least. Question would be why you didn't purchase more from basspro while you were there.

I would think someone in the business of destroying your bait site maybe prepared to protect themselves so they will not be caught easily. If they are aware of trail cams with a black box they only need to wear a mask. You may want to build another bait site near by in such a way it would be hard to find. Keep baiting old site while you are trying to catch them. I used to find a lot of marijuana plots in the areas I hunted by the high traffic paths into the plot which was easy to spot. Can you see where they park the vehicle on the road and place a camera near there. Sounds like your hunting has changed to a new game. Good luck.

Hope you catch them ... been through this myself on private land with camera thieves and turned out to be some local kids. Confronted their father and that didn't go well "not my boys". I had informed the police of the trespass and theft and while they weren't concerned about it at the time, it was sure nice to refer to it when the meeting with the boys father didn't go well. Wishing you the best of luck in catching them!

Hey scalder, thought we had a deal! Why didn't you show up???!

We had problems with trespassers last year. We setup cameras at license plate level that worked pretty good. We actually had cameras covering cameras. We then put a cheap camera right on a stake at the fork in the road figuring it would draw attention... the guys ended up parking right in front of it and NOT taking it :-)

We caught them, I wish you the same luck!

Two or three cameras - one to watch for game, the other 2 to watch the camera, hidden well.
I had my camera stolen and it sucks.

I think they are waiting for some newer cameras with Bigger memory cards to get installed...
