more bad luck, without words

okay, so I called the one farmer we hunt on because I thought I left my soft gun case in their field.. I saw him out discing his field yesterday and hoped if he saw it he'd pick it up.. called this morning to ask because my dad and his buddy are there hunting this morning.. told me no, didn't see anything.. " and I don't think we want you guys back there anymore, you're scaring our dog. she's getting old and yesterday she was terrified, scratching the door trying to get back into the house".. I am shocked.. we hunted 11 years there, taking many deer and turkey and geese.. always took care making sure we didn't make a mess, always was friendly with the owners, even brought the wife and kids out to visit them and the dog.. find it weird.. I know the dog is getting old, but she loved me.. always ran out to see me and lay down so I could rub her belly and play with her, even yesterday she did this when I was coming in from the field.. find it really weird.. oh well, we still got 2 spots out there plus a couple pieces of crown land.. looks like we gotta start knocking on doors again, and soon.. season is almost here..

hey it happens ,,I have seen a lot of farms sold ,people pass on and new owners take over and you are looking for a new farm to hunt ,,best of luck in your search ,,Dutch

I have always considered myself lucky to have the spots I have to hunt . Always stayed on the best side of the Landowner . Ask each spring and fall if it is still OK .Had 1 property change hands ...sometime happens. Good luck .

Had Bill Troubridge come in and lease a farm out from under us this year. We are fortunate to have multiple places kind of an underhanded move.

It's happening here quite a bit,guys with money leasing property under people.it's all about cash.we have a property up north that we own and some guys came to us and said they leased are land and to get off.it got down to the police coming on our call .seems a neighbor leased land and included our property in his lease.

I think that's what happened here.. they were so good to us, and us to them.. and they just seemed to get cold all of a sudden.. there is one guy in our area who takes up a ton of land ( last I heard the guy and his "group" have about 40 properties) and he guides for deer , turkey and goose on them.. just sucks when we had exclusive rights for so long.. I used to ask them every year about hunting the following year and after 3 or 4 years they said we didn't have to ask anymore, just hunt it.. oh well.. things happen, just gotta get knocking on doors again and start canvasing for new bush's to hunt...

welcome to the wonderful world of finding hunting property....lost mine prime spot a few years ago when the husband died and his wife said no...now there is a big country mansion right were i used to shoot turkeys....with respect to deer hunting...we lost a PRIME hunting location a few years back...landowner literally kicked us out and said to never come back ...no reason given..such is life.

Really? So he goes in and gets an "I already have guys here", and the the old "Well let me lease it then". I don't blame the farmer at all for taking the opportunity to make some extra income. So I beg to differ.

That's tough.

Private land is worth working for which it sounds like you did. I am down to one spot of private land now and its a good one so I make sure the neighbours have nothing to complain about as I have found in the past they can have a big influence on the land owner.

Well that sucks.

Im thankful every day I was born into a camp with private land to hunt on. Weve lost a few of our neighbours properties in recent years and that stings enough.

Dead on, it sucks for the little guys but it is no different than the land owner deciding they want to hunt it or that they do not want anyone hunting it. They own the land, it costs a lot to maintain the land and hold the land, they are allowed to do with it what they want.

We still have tons of crown and public land available, compare Ontario to many other places in the world and we should not complain about our opportunities.

I won't comment on the whole "this comment is uncalled for"... but I agree, we do have a couple pieces of crown land, however there are also many many others who hunt this land making it rather unsafe as they are very very small pieces of land.. it won't stop me from hunting it, just have to really be careful which is why finding private land is so crucial.. I do know there are some massive bucks on crown land. there is one piece I may hunt this season with my boy, saw 2 of the biggest bucks in my life in this spot.. just sucks that you can't hang a stand and leave it there, makes hunting with my boy tougher, but I could always bring my blind and brush it in a little when I get it set up.... we still hunt the bush beside this bush we lost, just hope something doesn't happen to this bush as this would put us up the creek without a paddle...

Either buy property or get a few guys and a few hundred bucks each and lease. Sucks but that's what's it coming to with a thickening population density, so might as well get on board early.

Is it not cheaper to buy your meat at the store than hunting it.? With all the gear , atv's , guns (most have more than a couple), shells , decoys, duck boats, etc. I know lots of people who already view hunting as a rich persons sport.

In most cases this is true but for me mostly irrelevant. I hunt because I love it - the meat is just an added bonus. Treat the same way you would any hobby. Fishing is the same - it would be far more cost effective to just buy fish at the store, but where's the fun in that? Some guys drop their money on motorcycles - it would be far cheaper to just use whatever vehicle they already own. Same reasons again - they pour money into their motorcycles because they love it.

My honest opinion is that you are trying to have some fun right now by stirring the pot. Smart guy like you knew the answer to this question before you asked it. Gotta watch out for you radical athesist/agnostic types.

Nowadays I'm not too concerned about the "situation" anymore . I still enjoy exclusive "hunting-rights" on 1 farm . --- Years ago , when I was a fanatic "groundhogger" my territory spanned ~ 5-6 farms . --- My method of payment was simple : I offered to help them with their chores (haying etc.) and repaired their broken machinery . Even if I didn't have time to spare I made an effort to accommodate them . --- Having been a mechanic paid off . --- Occasionally I "rushed-over" (after work) to weld some implements etc. --- You know what they say : One hand washes the other !

That has to be about the dumbest comment I've ever read on a hunting forum. Are you really a hunter???? Please tell us all where we can go and buy fresh moose, deer, bear, elk, caribou, ducks, geese etc.
Also many hunters aren't rich and just hunt with minimal equipment. Makes me wonder about all these people you know with their ill conceived perceptions about hunting and hunters.

I could go on, but that would just add to the attention you seem to be looking for...

I will definitely keep that in mind, once we figure out what is going to happen with these spots we hunt.. really hoping we can figure it all out and come to an understanding.. but like said earlier by someone else, it's their land and I will respect their decision and that is exactly what I am going to say if they stick to the " you can't hunt " decision... just means my son and I get to bond a little more when I show him how much work is involved knocking on doors for permission... lol

everything can be a "rich man's" hobby or sport if you want to indulge in every gimmick available.. would it not be cheaper to just not fish at all, or hunt, or play golf, or do any sort of hobby that would involve any sort of monetary commitment? but like said, where is the fun in that? if you wish to be a person that chooses that lifestyle, by all means, have at it.. but I will NEVER give up my hunting and fishing... I work far too hard and that is something I enjoy.. I have shot many deer, turkey, geese and I have also passed on many of them as I just enjoyed watching them ... just being out there is so therapeutic and such a stress relief.. it's also a great privilege that putting a little extra money into it is alright... would you not spend a little extra $$ on a nicer truck because it's nicer, has more safety features, will last longer than an older used model?? to each their own, but coming on here and saying something like you did , well it's just plain ridiculous..

When good land is iin the $1000's of dollars an acre, an monthly payment on that land may be between $5-900 a month plus taxes and maintenance, and insurance....to insure keeping a spot every year the least could offer money to hunt. Or time to help on thhe property and always notify when coming onto and off the property even if they don't care....get s they wouldn't want t go out on their own property if not sure if bullets may be travelling around or spoil your hunt.

Maybe you hunted the free land too much? You hunted and left your case and then your Dad was back there with a buddy....
How many free hunts on a piece of property is reasonable ?

As land becomes more expensive to buy/own; many landowners may not wish to offer "free access" to their property.
So, why complain; or call out someone else for paying cash and leasing the land that you have enjoyed for free.
Offering some of your own cash to lease the property for the year seems like cheap insurance for your hunting season.
Find out what he gets for an annual lease rate costs and divide it by the number of hunters and # of hunts; and beat the rate, or.
Or make your own bid.........
4 guys, 10 hunts ( turkey, quackers, deer ) @ say $ 50 bucks a crack per hunt works out to be $ 2000; seems fair.
For $1500 each, the same four guys can buy 100 acres near Tweed, and hunt Elk, ducks, geese, deer, cut firewood and hold an asset that increases in value.

Or, put $100 bucks of gas in your truck and drive further afield to access free crown land.

No sense grousing about having had free access for years in the good ole days. Life moves forward....

yeah, it's possible to offer money to hunt, but money is tight.. if money was an issue, it would have been brought up over the past 11 years.. we had exclusive rights and never had any issues, so I am curious how many people will bring up the whole attitude of " how many free hunts" issue? do you lease all your land? I actually drive by crown land to get to these bushes, it's a matter of safety and knowing we're the only ones on the property.. we leave our stands up year round and spend money on all our landowners at the end of the year in appreciation of access to their land...
what I am saying, is that I want to talk to them and find out if it's possible to keep hunting the land if we don't use our guns..
what does it matter if we hunt 2 or 3 days a week? we already had permission to come and go as we please without having let them know.. we always talked to them on the way in or way out and made trips out to see them with the kids and let them play with the dogs, etc.
in terms of "calling " someone out on paying cash to hunt where we hunt for "free"? my "beef" with that is that some people who have the cash to spend, are leasing up all the land in the area.. how much land do you really need to hunt? makes it tough when you have fewer and fewer spots to hunt.. would you hunt crown land if you had 100 other guys in there as well?
I am just tired of hearing all the negativity.. I came here to say it sucks we lost a great spot after 11 years and that we either have to knock on more doors or work something out with the land owner.. I bust my off to provide for my kids and my family and don't have extra $2000 - 3000 to spend on hunting property that I make it out to 5-10 times in an entire year..

That's a good point- Being able to hunt without guns might be a good compromise to your problem.
May also set you apart from the new entrant to your honey hole.
Shows you heard his concern about the dog, and if noise was the issue- that should solve the problem.

Your money argument makes no sense however.
Each year, land becomes more and more expensive; and taxes increase progressively.
Maybe 5-10 hunts a year for the past 11 years ( 50- 100 hunts ) without any compensation was also a slow burn.
Therefore; this year, after 10 prior years, the dog, land costs, lack of your cash, and a new entrant with cash, may in fact have been the tipping point for the owner.

We hunt crown land early season, and hunt private land later in the season where we pay the taxes of the land and share the catch.
No issues yet, but that can always change, as you say.

I don't have the answer for you, except to say, the landowner may have just used that as an excuse? He may have had a reason other than what he told you, but just didn't know how to tell you? Wife? daughter/son, etc. may have put him up to it to simply rid the property of hunters? Or, they may have someone in the family who has decided they want to hunt it? Sorry for your bad luck.

No one was being negative, everyone is just telling you to put up some cash if you want your hunting spot back. It's very clear you wore out your welcome with the farmer. If someone was hunting my property 2-3 times a week and lighting up flocks of geese at the crack of dawn on the weekend I'd get tired of it pretty fast too. Not to mention that you, your son, your buddies, your dad and his buddies, then some of those buddies might sneak back onto the property later when you guys aren't there, are all hunting it. That might be a bit too much activity for some people to want on their property, especially if they have to wake up to it 2-3 times a week for free.

Short cash? If you can find the time to hunt 10 times in the fall on that property alone you can find the time to get a part time job in the Winter/Spring/Summer to pay for some land. If your son and dad, and his buddies, and your buddies can find the time to hunt that property 2-3 times a week they too can get part time jobs the rest of the year and save up an extra $500 bucks each if moneys that much of an issue for everyone. Pool that all up and you're well over the asking price.

To the OP.....best of luck with the season and obviously you were doing something right if you kept the property for 10+years... all I can say is............................................ stuff happens.....

The forums are not negative- its a different look at a problem the OP has already internalized.
So the perception by the OP's is often that the new view is negative; but that's only because it is from a very different point of reference looking at the same facts in an unemotional way.
Personally, I appreciate feedback that differs from my perspective- it allows for a few "ah ha" moments.

Interesting to see that other opinions think that the frequency of the usage might have been a trigger for the dismissal from the property. Makes sense when you stand back and think about waking up to blasts of gun fire while sleeping in your farmhouse.

seriously? I work full time and have 3 kids, I have no time for a part time job.. we all work, full time and have no time for additional part time jobs to raise the money for buying land or leasing land.. maybe YOU have time to pick up part time jobs here and there , but not everybody does.. in terms of goose hunting, we go 1 or 2 times a season, that's it.. we hardly hunt his land as he normally has soy beans on it, this year he had winter wheat so it's off by the time early goose season starts.. we hardly shoot, so the thought of us "lighting up" the flocks early in the a.m is totally off key.. no welcome has been worn off ( to our knowledge) as they hardly ever go in their bush, they never know we are even there ( like I said in OP, only once in 11 years did we ever park in their property)... what I was saying in my OP was that it sucks to lose a spot after 11 years.. I stated it's because they have an old dog that apparently gets frightened by us being there.. yes I said that the dog loves us and was never afraid of us before, but he's older now, so maybe it's legit.. time will tell when I talk to him, but until you know me, my group don't make such forward comments.. maybe you don't mean to be offensive, but I take it that you are... I don't take kindly to someone telling me to get off my and get a part time job to sport a hobby I can already barely afford or make time for.. people lease land that's fine, I don't look at it as we're hunting and taking advantage of hunting people's land for "free".. as I said, we buy stuff for the farmers/landowners every year... plus, they want the deer and turkey, etc taken care of as they cause a ton of damage to their crops.. also, the bush is never used and sits there vacant.. it's different if they hiked, horse back rode through it, etc..

Well said, some guys are just like that just remember, talk is cheap:) A lot of times talk like the comment you responded to is based on personal experience 9most of us don't even think like that).

I personally think the guy is simply done with having people on his property, people change ya know.... Move on to the next property, this guy is done with you for whatever the reason is, fact is that he owns the land and wants no more hunting. Simple ask in my mind.

People have reasons. Sometimes what they say is true and sometimes it's just an excuse you get. The dog -- mine seven year old was afraid of fireworks this year for the first time ever. Out of nowhere. So maybe it's the truth. Thankfully she still gets thrilled by gunshot.

I agree, which is what I think happened here.. I am not really complaining about it, just shocked.. so nobody get me wrong, stuff happens and I respect that.. we have had a great relationship for 11 years and I am not going to push or endanger that.. I want to go let him know I got our stuff out of there, shake his hand and thank him for 11 great years of great hunting and let him know we hunt the neighbors spot still and will do what we can to still keep an eye on his spot ( we've had trespassers in there before) and let him know we appreciate letting us on there to do the one thing we absolutely love to do...

exactly.. I am over it now, was really shocked and kinda hurt by it at first.. but I am a very firm believer that things happen for a reason... I have to stop at 2 spots I have been keeping an eye on for 2 years... hopefully we could land one of them, we will see.. if not, we are still lucky as we have 2 spots from the one landowner and we have 2 crown bushes near us.. one isn't hunted all too often, that I can tell...

yup, you are right, it's a part of hunting.. I have had friends tell me they've lost their spot and never really thought it would happen to us, but it did and now I know the sting of it all... but, life moves on.. we will stop and talk to a few owners on the way from hunting after opening day and see if we can land a new spot... it sucks but life sucks sometimes...lol..

Nothing wrong with going back and asking again down the road. I lost a waterfowl spot one year simply because the owner said he'd heard enough gunshots. A number of years later, I went back and he had no problems with me going back in.
Look at the bright side, this may lead you to better opportunities in other areas that you may have never bothered to look into.
