So I'm in the market for a new pair.
Any suggestions?
I had a pair that were just plain great. JB Goodhue. Canadian made and fit beautifully. They were 25 years old though. They resembled a pair of 8" logger boots but no steel toe. Closest I could find were something made by Danner at $500+! Way to expensive for this boy.
Any ideas?

Don't discount the Danner , I realize the initial price is a shocker but they are worth every penny if you ask me. I bought the Danner Canadians 17 years ago and the price is about the same today so say $500 divided by 17 years = 29 bucks a year. To me that's cheap considering I know people who spend 100 -$200 on boots and have to replace them every year or 2.

'Boots' are rarely all encompassing...different conditions and use should dictate what you need.
For instance, siting in a stand when it's -15 you don't need a good support hiker..you need a boot designed for cold like a Mukluk..
If you stalking deer thru wet/water areas, then an 8" boot is not as practical as a good knee high rubber boot...
I have a closet full of different footwear as I hunt from Oct (fall) to end Dec (winter)...
So Mr. Boiler...what kind of specifics are you looking for in a boot ?

Cant get my head around the idea of spending hundreds of dollars on a pair of mostly made Chinese boots,Kamik boots are Canadian made and good to below -40, your lining gets wet simply put a dry one in,they also dont leave much scent behind.
I have Danners, great boots but I mostly use rubber boots or hip waders to get to the lesser travelled areas. The Lacrosse Alpha Burly are really comfortable but only lasted one year before developing a crack and their warranty dept is of no use, I had 2 different Cabelas boots - the 'Comfort tracks' lasted about 3 months and are anything but comfortable - whereas the 'Dura tracks' are still going strong after 2 years though they are a bit stiff.
Your feet will sweat in rubber boots so if this presents a problem with cold feet what I do is pack in an extra pair of socks and change the damp ones out when I reach my stand.
Cabela's boots also have a lifetime warranty.
Sorry Gilroy, but $30 rubber boots with felt lining just don't cut it for me.
Lots to think about. Yeah, I'm figuring on hunting from mid October to mid January. All depending on the species. When I hunt with the wife cousin its out of a tree stand. Ive got a good pair of Baffin boots good to -40'. Good point regarding an extra pair of socks. Even with the warmest boots if your feet are wet the cold will get at them. The old hunting boots I had were more for stalk hunting. Thats where good arch support and fit comes in. Dancers may be the wise choice in the end. Ill let you all know...
Try the Under Armour HAW 2.0. My favorite boots I have ever worn! Have a great heal cup and feel amazing. Many of my friends have bought them as well and are really happy with them. Nice to have the neoprene tops and a hard bottom. Make them great for duck hunting or deer. The good thing is they are scent locked to. They offer them in a 400g insulation and a 800 I believe as well.

trying the 9mm cabelas neoprene instinct accelerators myself this yr...lifetime warranty and comfy...had my heart on the muck boots until i tried these on and their warranty sold me as well they have a hsank in the sole for excellent stability.....now hafta see if they are as warm as they claim
I use exclusively Under Armour products and do not like the HAW 2.0. boot. It hurts wearing them on the back of my heel and ankle area. Most uncomfortable boot i have ever worn. Muckboot Wetland is my boot of choice but they can tear very easily if you get yourself into thorny thickets. Paid $100 plus tax for the MuckBoots.Quote:

Using pair of Grange-non insulated boots for 9 seasons. Still going strong. Using them all year(scouting, looking for sheds, tree preparation and early season hunts)
Insulated Alpha Burly Sport boots with 8oo gr insulation and neoprene top are with me since 2008.With a BPS life time wool socks they are good to -20C
Both excellent ,high boots, very egronomical design.Easy to walk in them,good calf support, easy to go off-on. They dry overnight.
Someone mentioned cracking LaCrosse boots- maybe later models are not as good.......?
They so far work for me.

I got onto the Irish Setter Rutmasters with 1200 gram thinsulate. I have had my pair for 4 years without issue. They are plenty warm in the treestand and great when a blood trail runs through a bog (or my buddy's because mine never go that far haha, right?).
I use them for ice fishing as well with a good pair of socks and no problem 8 hours standing on ice.
These are my pick anyways...and you can get them on sale at Sail for 150 or less.

Not completely waterproof like the "green boots" but most of the water is hard in December anyway. Wait for them to go on sale and you can pick them up for around 80 bucks. I can get quite a few late seasons out of the TSC boots and replace the Canadian Tire boots 3 times over for less than the price of some of these premium boots.
Depends on what type of hunting you're doing though I guess. My choices are mainly for walking in to a stand and sitting for a few hours. Probably not the best choice for someone who walks all day.
Just wanted to add guys that you can buy a better liner for rubber boots at CT ,much warmer and swap them as you need.I think they call them Thermo lining,silver coloured.I have several spares as the boots eventually crack on the outside but liners as still good.On that note,especially if you do a lot of stand hunting,get 1/2 size bigger boots to help swap liners.
have them and they are great for stalking and they'll keep your feet warm when you sit. haven't used mine since I got a dog again; suddenly I don't care as much about stand hunting deer anymore - and I bet that won't change for the next couple of years LOLQuote:

Thanks for all the advice. In the end I picked up a set of Irish Setter Ridge Toppers for 150$. They felt right and from what Ive read so far they are warm and waterproof.
Now to break them in over the next couple of weeks... I'll do a review probably around November 1st...
Baffin Titans, best insulated rubber boot I have ever owned hands down. I have problems with my feet getting cold easily ice fishing or stand hunting. With the Baffin Titans I don't have that problem any more.
I used to have a closet full of the liners I saved from all the CT insulated rubber boots I went through. They got the job done and I wore the soles out of a few but I'll never go back now, warm feet are great when you're 6+hrs deep on a cold November day sitting as still as humanly possible.
You can't go wrong with Danners. They are expensive but they last. There is a Canadian company that makes similar boots. Shoe Technology Company (STC) I have a pair of their 10" leather patrol boots - with gore tex and 200g of thinsulate. They cost $280 several years ago. I also use t Canadian Tire insulated rubber boots for waterfowl and hunting in areas that are wet.
Those Baffins are super warm but I can't get my pant legs into the boot or over the boot. The liner used is super thick.Quote:

I always go 2 sizes bigger with the rubber boots to leave room for extra socks and a loose fit. If you wear them too tight you'll get cold.Quote:

Im a big fan of Irish Setters. Very comfortable, warm, light, and durable.
I have a pair of Danner "uplands" (don't think this is the actual name). It's a nice looking boot and for the first 2 years seemed fine. But going on three years and they are not holding up. Gilroy...you are right on, with that choice. For walking or snowshoeing..all I use. When sitting in Deer stand I used cheapo snow boots. Buy extra size too big, go to dollar store and get silver liner and felt pads. (buy a couple of sets) I change the pads quite often, never let me down in 3 years.I use the chemical hand warmers on colder days in stand. I was at Marks Work Warehouse yesterday and was very surprised at the variety of lightweight cold rated boots that the WindRiver brand manufactures. Most of them if not all were made out of ripstop material, coretex and some rated to -40. The quality overall after doing some research on ratings was excellent.
Where does one buy a brand new pair of 10 year old boots? That is the problem - is the manufacturing process identical now as to then? The materials identical? The chemicals to make the materials identical? The way outsourcing is done (read:cheapest labour), I wouldn't be surprised at how frequently even manufacturing locations are changed.Quote:
