What's the camp penalty for a missed shot ?

So we put out a guest on our very best watch.
Tower stand, overlooking a half acre food plot, right at the waters edge of a 10 acre pond.

At 8:15 on a string, The big bull, cow and calf, filter out of a hinge cut area; left side, 75 yards away from the stand. Calf stays tight to mom, but presents a shot just before they get in behind the big birch.
BANG !!!
Missed >>>

The bull, cow and calf slowly walk away into the bush.
We scoured the area, and up into the woods for 20 minutes just to make sure it was a clean miss and didn't find a drop of blood.

So what's the penalty, apart from some good ribbing, for missing that shot in your camp ??
I assume he is now sentenced to last choice when stands come up......

Camp penalties are never the same for everyone and because of this I would never give one out. The guys who ran the camp never wore the hat or admitted that they missed but rather would blame everyone else or everything else.

Camp penalties caused people to not shoot when they were not 100% sure of the shot and claim they never saw a deer, less BS that way.

Was really half joking; but didn't know if there was a ritual; like the opposite a hole-in-one.
This is our first year adding moose; usually just deer hunters.

Skeet shooting; they toss your hat in the air and shoot it the first time you break 25.

We don't really have a penalty...but the place will be named after you if it doesn't already have a name.
For the first 10 years or so, it will be called "the stand where Steve missed the buck".
If you're lucky, at some point it will be shortened to "Steve's stand", and maybe 20 years later, people *might* forget that you missed the buck there.

I think our poor beggar was still shaking 10 minutes after he fired the gun.
Nobody expects that kind of action, on opening day.

I know around our camp table the stories aren't about the miss...but the best 'excuses' used to defend the miss...some time honoured ones still get a good for a laugh at the expense of a few red cheeks....:)

If everyone was cool it would be great, we actually had a hat with antlers.

If we were seeing deer and getting deer then nobody had a problem wearing the hat for the night of a miss but if it was Thursday and we had no deer on the pole a miss meant you were ripped apart for 3 days.

I hunt now with a bunch of guys who laugh everything off, we used to say the guy who missed the solo goose paid for breakfast but since we generally all miss one it cannot be enforced.

Weve got a goofy hat to wear for the evening.

Its the story of the miss for years afterwords thats the funner things

In one bear outfitters camp that I know of they have to cut the tail off their hunting shirt and nail it to a wall. That one wall is covered now with shirt tails--the vast majority owned by the archery hunters so I suppose that's incentive for them to pick up their act.

At our deer camp we have swift and cruel punishment. That night you lose your shirt tail and it goes on a nail on the wall. Incredibly I even have a few shirt tails on that nail. :ashamed:

No penalities...everyone misses at one time or another....that is all part of hunting...you don't penalize someone for that...anyone every tried to cut the shirttail off my hunting shirt would be hanging on the wall themselves

If you never miss, means you never shoot. Missing sucks so if its just some good old fashion teasing I think thats fine but missing is punishment on its own.

A swift boot in the arse would suffice, lol.

That's why its called hunting and not shooting. :moose:

we always had a wall of shame. the cartridges were displayed on the wall with their names on it. the wall was beside the door so everytime you went out you saw it. over the years there got to be quite a selection of casings. always enjoyed looking at the wall of shame.

Back in the day it was the lose of a shirt tail, now it's just a ribbing that last's for years to come... All in good fun and some how Green Peace - r comes into the conversation...

Did he sight his rifle in beforehand? If he didn't, he should be banned to the kitchen. Some would argue he should be banned from the gang. No excuse for not properly sighting in your rifle BEFORE the hunt.

Shot of Jager for each shot missed. Turns into an interesting night for some...lol.

We have 2. The first one is the dog man cuts your shirt tail and it goes on the wall of shame. The next morning when you feel that chill up your back it reminds you to keep shooting. The second is we have an orange hat with "misser" on it. You get the "privilege" of wearing it until the next guy misses (if you miss you hope it's early in the week). It has been a tradition in our camp for over 25 years and it's all in good clean fun. All of our guys take it in stride and the misses are more fun than the kills. We also have a camp diary and there is always a good story of the hunt written in there.

To those who say it causes people to not shoot it doesn't seem to slow our guys down. It is all taken lightly and it makes the time away that much more enjoyable.

Ps the inclusion of 2 way radios has made the stories that much better :-)

I'd never hunt with someone who'd argue that. Quite frankly they'd be an a-hole. Missing should be viewed as a learning/teaching experience.

There are reasons besides not sighting a gun in that someone can miss. Buck fever. A twig. Just plain bad luck. The best marksmen in the world will miss at some point, and lets not forget WE ALL START SOMEWHERE and being a good shot takes practice up to and including on live game. Setting a gun on a sandbag and firing off a bench is vastly different then taking a free hand shot at a live animal.

Ive never failed to kill a large game animal Ive pulled the trigger on. I have no illusions my perfect record will stand forever.

Compounding that- it turns out it was a new to him gun and wasn't sighted in.
So that extends the margin of error.

Good news is no Ravens !! Hoping that means just a good clean miss.

I've always thought the hunt captain should take him and his gun to the range.
After many years of some hits but many misses we learned that one old guy had no idea how to aim his gun! The hits had been pure luck with his autoloader...

That's hard to understand - but I guess its possible.

Our guys can all shoot adequately and have pretty good rifles. Misses tend to be a) buck fever related and b) impatience (likely related to a).

In our camp,the misser gets to turn his hat backwards and does the supper dishes.....by himself......while everyone else laughs at him.

There is teaching point #1. Never go on a hunt with a rifle you havent personally shot before, or at the very least know its owner who can vouch for its accuracy.

A new gun will never he acceptably accurate from the store. Always fire it beforehand. I would rather our guys know their guns are ready then worry about spooking game around camp by the shots required to test accuracy.

Except in this case, the young hunter, steeled himself to the point, such that he was determine, it should not happen again. The following day he shot and fatally wound his uncle, a family friend, who was doing the dogging on the drive.

I don't think he deliberately shot anyone, but rather shot at a target that he hadn't clearly identified because he wasn't going to let anything get by him.

That is a tragic story.
Very sorry to hear that.

However; improper handling of a firearm and not properly identifying a target are not someone else's fault; ever.

I guess I didn't make it totally clear, but you rightly have understood what happen. He was a young hunter, it may even have been his first hunt, I'm not sure, but it may have been his last. And rightly so, no one else was ultimately responsible for pulling the trigger. Knowing his uncle, he may have even joined in, on doing a bit of the ribbing. However belittling someone, and poking fun at their ability, might have some fur reaching effects, unbeknown to those involved in doing it. In this case it did, and proved tragic. I'm not saying there might not be a place for such fun. However, during the hunt may not be the place.

Trying to deflect the blame for such a horrible tragedy on something like a hunt camp tradition that is quite common is ridiculous. Clearly this young hunter wasn't ready to hunt. The fact he passed his hunter safety course didn't guarantee he was capable of making a judgement. How somebody mistakes a deer for a human likely wearing blaze is puzzling. That kid was trigger happy and that same accident could possibly have happened 5 years later. Not sure making someone do dishes promotes trigger happy behaviour. As for calling the practice "stupid" if you knew the hunters in our camp and their credentials regarding firearms, game laws and basic common sense you would rethink your comments. Yet they have all missed deer and have shirt tails on the nail. Its a simple fun tradition nothing more.

The tradition of losing your shirt tail for a miss has been around hunt camps for years . If you can't afford to lose a t-shirt and take some ribbing about your miss, you certainly would not be a lot a fun to be with around most camps . Also, there are more laughs about a miss than there are a kill.

I think it's kind of like golf.. same thing if you don't make it past the women's tee...

Everyone will or has missed. Misses can happen for a million of different reasons. Some of which the shooter can't even control. Most people, when they miss already feel regretful or will be angry with themselves for missing. Why exaggerate those negative feelings and emotions? Why put more stress on the shooter with the thought of what will happen if they miss? As a shooter you already have enough to think about including emotions going through your mind too! Why add more?

Misses should be taken for what it is; a learning experience! Misses are a time for learning and growing as a hunter/marksman. Try and go through your mind and think about what you could have done different? Ask some more experienced guys what they would do in that situation? Maybe even go and fire a test shot to see if your scope was bumped off. Other guys at camp should be giving advice and being positive.

They could also pour the shooter a stiff drink too :)

I'd argue that the joking and jesting is a way to get rid of those negative feelings. Seeing shirttails on that wall from hunters through the years is a good way of reminding the hunter who missed that it happens to everybody at one point. As long as it's good natured ribbing and not meant cruelly, but that's up to the hunt camp to enforce too. Nothing says that there won't be advice and extra range time just because of some good natured fun. I agree on the drink though!!

Based on what I've seen and what I've read, the outcome is determined by the person involved. Most guys will shrug it off and accept the consequences, whereas a few will see it as a challenge to never be in that position again. We've never shamed the guys that have missed because the next miss may be yours.

Are you serious? As long as it is a clean miss, who cares? Have some fun with it!!!

Sometimes these things are meant as a personal attack. I am glad you hunt in a camp where people laugh things off but that is not always the case. I hunted with a gang where 2 guys ruined it for me and I left the family camp along with my dad and uncle. Now I hunt with my dad and uncle along with dads friends and we love it, we have a great time and if someone missed we make sure to take them out to the range to see how bad they shoot. We rip people more for their Euchre playing ability more than their inability to shoot a running deer at 100 yards through thick bush.

Another tail on the wall monday morning donated by the camp captain. He doesn't miss often and couldn't blame the gun because he was at the range on sunday. Sometimes these things happen and to be honest we weren't upset as it was quite warm and we would have had to make a trip to town. We had a discussion about our wall of shame on sunday and we all agreed that we enjoy those stories more than the 2 ontario records that have come from our camp in the last few years.

A hunting buddy of mine once said that if you don't get overly excited just before you pull the trigger, whats the point of going hunting. Wisdom from an 80 yr old.
