Hi All,
I ready recently that if you had limited days to deer hunt the best days from year to year to be out there are Oct 31 & Nov 10-15. Can't recall the article I read this though. Anyone out there have go to days where they have to be in the field if life & weather permits it. I thought it was interesting that this deer hunting guru had specific days. I have noticed on my property according to my trail cams....the bucks arrive right about now
Any thoughts?

For the past 8yrs or so the Rut-Bucks (daytime showings) on my trail cameras start around 15-18 Nov..so pretty close to what you have read.
But we still shot them during Hunt camp 1 Nov...so go figure :)
The best days to go deer hunting are the ones when the deer pass in front of your setup

I seem to think the second week of the 2 week gun hunt would be better from what I've noticed.
The best days are the ones you can get out in the bush on!! Wether its prime time or not!
For the big mature bucks, the 2nd week of November is always the best time.
I'm gonna hunt hard the second week and again late season over a food plot. I think that's gonna be my strategy. And of course any other minute I can :)
I like Halloween for deer hunting. But any unsettled weather is good. The deer seem to move early in day light on evening with unsettling weather. Dutch
Any day out in the woods is a good day in my books.
i go a limb here anyday is a good day :) but being a bow hunter holloween night as been the most successfull for rattling big buck in specially if u enter they core area they come in mad and ready , then the secound week of November of course because they starting to run out of they territories looking for more girls sadly the road kill of big bucks go up ,had a niece 14 pter hit right in front of my house on a very rainy day 10 year a goQuote:

From what I've seen - trail cam and personal observations...if you have a local buck you've been watching, you need to get him before about Oct 25th or so - then the bucks change their routines and you won't find him where he has been the last two months, but you may/will see other bucks you've never seen before.
The real rut - when bucks start running the bush and being careless is (many other pointed this out) the second week in November - MP's 15th-18th would be a pretty good guess if you wanted it narrowed down to a few days. ...and the peak doesn't change year to year, although weather (hot/cold) may make it more/less dramatic
Charlie Alsheimer and Wayne Laroche theory of moon based run has been refuted by just about everyone else in the deer research field. Until Alsheimer came up with this (which is IMO just another way for a writer to make a few bucks - he is not a researcher, he is a photographer who got into writing - Laroche is a researcher he uses to give his theory some credibility), I thought a lot of him - not so much now.Quote:

I pay exactly zero attention to when a magazine published in the southern US tells me to go hunting deer.
Its actually published out of Iola WI, which is North of most of Ontario's deer country. A latitude about as far north as Algonquin park. People not familiar with US geography seem to forget that the contiguous US goes all the way up to the 49th parallel. If your in eastern or central Ontario, 49N is way up north. Don't dis the mag too much - its obvious you are not familiar with it. Of all the outdoor mags I've read - it stands head and shoulders above all others - except maybe gundog.
NOV 17 TO NOV 21 if you're looking for the largest deer in the area!
This is post rut - the big ones are searching desperately for the last hot doe.
This cruising drunken search lasts 4 days. Some years it's nov 16 to 20. Other years 18th to 22nd!
During these 4 days you should hunt all day if possible because the regular morning and evening hunt ritual just does not apply.
If you should get lucky and see a cruising bruiser you need to kill him or kiss him goodbye. He won't be back!
I always start on the 16th! Better to be early then to find out you may have missed a day or two!
Hunt bottlenecks, pinch points, crossings.
Deer and deer hunter is not perfect but his theories are not bad on the basis that most of our gun seasons run along the chasing phase of the rut . October 31 until the first week of November is always a good time around here in Southern Ontario to see and harvest a mature buck.Quote:

I have to disagree with you on this one Mike. A guy at work was known to go 'a little loonie' in and around full moons. He had been there for over 30 years, My father worked with him when he started, I worked with him when he left, we have both witnessed it, along with everyone else who has ever worked in the building. November 7th will be the beginning of the rut. Prime time 10:00 to 2:00.
According to Alsheimer, the run should run Oct 24 - Nov 3 this year. I'm seeing very little buck rubbing/scraping yet. Even though the bucks are there (trail cam pics).Quote:

I'm a newbie to deer hunting. I've seen a few bucks on my cameras in the past few weeks, but always in the middle of the night. I've been profiling the antlerless deer photos to periods in the morning and afternoon. During the rut does all that go out the window? I was sort of resigned to not getting chance at buck since they only seem to appear at 2:00 in the morning.
What my question might boil down to is do I pull the trigger on a nice doe or do I wait for the mysterious daytime showing of a buck? (Yes I have an anterless tag.) I'm not interested in a rack, but I feel a little bad taking an adult female away from her fawns.
Werner, I was just going from previous experience. Nov 7th is the beginning of the rut. Full rut will be around the time you mention, Nov 11. I might be off a day or 2.
The weather channel says highs of 8 on Sunday and Monday here, then highs of 4 from then on. Low temps about -3 to -7. A bit warm but still should be a good hunt.
Opener is Saturday in wmu #8.
It's up to you what you do - but to give up hope of a decent buck because they only are showing up at night now is giving up too easily. When the rut starts, they will be running 24/7 and won't be sticking to their home grounds they've been living in Sept/Oct. That's why hunters are so keen about hunting the rut. Bucks change their "safe" patterns and become careless.Quote:

OMNR still seem to think we have too many does. Less does equals more tasty moose!!
Me and my hunting buddies all have 1 or 2 wolf permits. They are cheap so why not!! I won't let one walk if it comes into a deer bait.
I think it all depends on your area. This is only going to be my 5th season deer hunting and in my area I don't start seeing scrapes or rubs till end of this month to first week of November. So I'll say over the years anywhere between oct 27-nov 5 I start seeing rubs and scrapes. I got my deer anywhere between nov 11 to the latest which was last year in nov -25. I watched three doe feed together for a week and finally seen them getting chased around 23rd of nov. First time witnessing that. It was awesome.
So ya, overall just scout your area and do your research from trail cam picks (if you have any)from over the years, experience in the field and maybe ask some fellow friends/family or neighbours who hunt. Then go from there. Good luck
