My shotgun will hold a total of 7 rounds. It is pump.
Do I need a plug for it? Planning to slug hunt for deer.
I just need clarification, found in the general firearm guidelines that a repeating or semi auto shotgun needs to be plugged to hold a maximum of three rounds in the mag and chamber combined. Thanks!!
Well, yours IS a repeating shotgun, if you are hunting ANYTHING with it then it needs to be plugged....

It should of come with a plug but if not a piece of wooden dowel will work fine.

Like others have said you can buy wooden dowel and cut it to length or i know sail sells shotgun plugs for 3 or 4 bucks each

There are plastic ones that are better, they sell them through Cabelas and they are cheap, they normally take a 5rd mag and turn it into a 2rd mag but plastic dowl cut to size is good too, plastic is better for water.
Look in your closet, do you have a thick plastic coat hanger, they make great plugs...
I have pulled wooden plugs out of shotguns that were over 100 years old and have never found one with any kind of water damage.keep hearing about it but have yet to see it .wood still seems to be the most popular material for a shotgun plug. If you are worried about water give it y coat of water sealer.make sure to cut your plug so you can only fit two of the longest shells your gun can fire.like a 3.5 inch shotgun. Your wood dowling is going to work just fine , some of my shotguns are over 50 years old , model 12 Winchesters , they all have wood plugs in the magazines , none of them has failed due to absorption of water.Quote:

Another "Stupid" question, in the past, did this only apply to migratory bird hunting, or has it always applied to all shotgun hunting?

I'm not sure about the chronology, but the three shell rule for migratory birds is a federal law (since the feds do migratory birds) and I think it stems from the Migratory Birds Treaty and therefore applies throughout Canada and the US. Whereas all other wildlife is up to each province and state to set hunting regulations for. So it's possible that some provinces and US states shotguns are only limited to 3 rounds for migratory bird hunting, and can be used at higher capacities for hunting other animals, though in Ontario the rule applies to all shotgun hunting. That may be why racer55's link only mentions migratory bird hunting, since that's the only federal/nationwide ban on >3-shell capacity shotguns.Quote:
