In general you'll want to be sitting in a spot where you're expecting the deer to go by within 50 yards or so.
However if you have a deer hung up then you have a variety of options: buck grunt, doe bleat, and perhaps rattling.
Lots of videos available online with tons of good info on how to call and when to call.
Good luck!
What are you hunting with? Gun or bow? Controlled hunt on right now so just be mindful you are legal
Easy, attach a carrot on a string at the end of a stick. Works every time.....
were hunting bow.
just make sure bow is legal in the wmu you are in. many are closed this week for bow.
as for attracting deer if the carrots dont work try deer cane that outta bring em right in,
I use deer crossing signs...
Sit very still and make a noise like an apple :)
I've never had much luck with rattling, can't confirm if it helps or not.
Had better luck with 'Doe in Heat' flip cans. I have seen them work to get a Bucks interest.
Just sit still and be quiet.
No calling to tell them where you are.
Be in a place that have deer.
Feed your spot often.
Set up spot is very important, make sure you look for sign of deer
All kidding aside guys there is no guarantee that you will see deer it's called hunting. Best thing to do is make sure you are all legal for the spot you are at and give it a go. Sometimes you get lucky other times it might be years. Learn from what you see and don't be afraid to try things. Control your scent and noise, pay attention to the wind and best of all have fun
I pray. Lol
well just came back from WMU 47 just off 69. 6 days at camp. 2 days setup and scouting. 4 days hunting. no freaking deer came out during our sit ins; heard only a few shots. Saw a gorgeous bull moose off 300 meters. lots of deer tracks and feed eaten but i'll be dammed. now switching to bow hunt local WMU 73/60/78B ... *sigh* first year not even a single shot or sight.
Deer are really social animals and ask to join another group with a specific sound, no response :they will do two short notes louder and it's always the same. If the deer doesn't respond back, then they move on. Bucks are well aware of this sound and will run in when they hear it. Deer sometime do not want to socialize with other deer and just exnore the calling. Calling is like a two edge sword,it works but if it's bad you just gave your location away and deer will avoid or move around the location.
Your best bet is to find a funnel (pinch point ) and sit with a favourable wind and wait. Usually, does use the main trails and bucks use a trail that is down wind and almost invisible to scent check the main trails and stay in cover. During the rut anything and everything happens.
Scout out some well run trails.
Set up close by. Tree stands keep you a bit out of sight and force you to stay still. Ground blinds are more intrusive and best set up before the season starts.
If you don't mind the optics-- a bag of steam rolled corn certainly helps attract them.
Agree with Mike Pal. A few guys find rattling works. Most don't. I think you need an area with a large number of dominant bucks and a population close to 1:1 for bucks :does for rattling to be effective. That would be Northwest Ontario or managed game farms in Texas
Otherwise just wait until one walks by.
As mentioned previously, scouting and setting up in a high traffic area is important. Prepare yourself for deer travelling off the main trail.
Time is key. The longer you spend in a productive stand, the better your chances are.
thanks for all the responses. we are legal for bow, there was no gun hunt here at all. id like to try getting a bag of corn and dumping it. were working on borrowing a couple trail cams also. we dont have a tree stand unfortunately. there are however a ton of tracks all over the place. we sat out from 430 this morning until 12 this afternoon and didnt see anything. my brother is going back tonight. and ill be back in tomorrow morning.
Better to be paranoid about your scent cover than not. Try and put out your feed, cams in the rain, wear rubber soled boots. Pinch points, funnels and visible water crossings are your best bet. Topography maps of your local property help to scout potential set ups. Best of luck!
Just buy some nice deer grunt tube-I love Quaker Boy, but there are all kinds out there. You may be surprised how many deer(if they can hear you)will come in to investigate-or in a rut ,to find you. You just do not overdo it,2-3 short grunts ,then wait at least 30-45 min.Let the call work on them .And while waiting-be on red alert ,firearm in hand or really close........ they can show up in 2 minutes-or 25 minutes,no rush for them. They will sometimes circle you-so watch your downwind side. And remember, your ears are you biggest ally-unless the ground is really wet , you will likely hear them before seeing them, and can prepare accordingly.
Doe in heat bleats also can work nicely-bleat 5-10 times, then as above.
thanks gbk. how loud should these calls be? were juts sitting in a hedgerow, theres a small bush about 800 yards out, thats where most of the tracks seem to be heading. so were not sure how loud these calls need to be. the one my brother has seems to be pretty quite. he has a primos original can bleat call. should i invest in a mouth call?
I tried grunt calling to a deer that was walking away from me, it dropped down and took off, did not even look back.
The way I see it I cant tell the difference between dog barks, sure a growl is easy to tell but my dogs will sometimes bark when someone is approaching the house and all my dogs start barking and the neighbours dog too, sometimes one will bark at me when we are playing and the others do not even look over. I cannot tell the difference but the dogs sure can, and in a similar way I believe deer have different grunts that I cant tell the difference, but the deer that took off sure did.
You may get away with a grunt tube in a non pressured area but on public land I would not use one, best strategy is that of surprise: get in early, stay late, no scents, no sounds.
Hi Nate
I believe if you plan to grunt to call something to you from 800 yards, will likely not work. If you even try to call the loudest you can,i do not think (can not prove, because I never run a trial on grunting distances......)that maybe 200 yards the best you can be heard. But again deer have big ears. Yet 800 yards is to far.........Plus the wind (if any )will also blow the sound away from the deer(if the deer was upwind from you-if it was not, You would likely not see that deer anyway ,because she/he would be gone long time ago due of your "smell")....The grunt tube can be blown loud enough, and I never seen it having negative effects of using it loud-er(yet it may spook deer you did not see...and was to come your ways for one reason or another-but this is a chance you need to take)I tend to softly grunt if the deer is within eyesight, and yet to see deer running away from it......but it can happen. The bleat can has "shorter reach",i like my Quaker boy bleat in heat can as well, it Is a bit louder then the HS bleat I had earlier .I believe it can reach 100-150 yard's maybe. Just do not overdo it-if you see a deer,do not fidget a lot(slow movement is OK)thus bleating with a can to have a deer come to you that way is almost impossible(you need to tip the can)soft grunting(if the deer is close-grunt away from the deer-so the deer will not pinpoint you hopefully)will give you better chances. What do you have to loose anyway? If the deer is not coming your way-it is not coming. So-trying to call it in can increase your odds. Practice at home, and try to watch some deer vocalization video, and mimic it. Happy hunting. And,I think grunting/bleating on public land versus private land has no bearing on your success. As far my experience goes......Yet I grunt talked with hunters on 2 occasion-until figured out,it is not a deer, and once I put a shotgun hunter on a stalk -looking for me ,after I bleat few times........So, be alert hunting with a gun, or with archery if hunting from the ground.
