Hi guys, anyone have any experience with the invisible fence systems? We are moving to a 1/2 property surrounded by open fields, and a busy road out front. Want to give the dogs the freedom to roam without the traditional fence. Any pointers/comments about both the buried invisible fence and the wireless system would be greatly appreciated.
I have used both. The buried wire allows a bigger and irregular area to be fenced.Quote:

The strong points of the wireless are , no digging, easy setup and you can take it to a friends for the day, or the cottage for a week and so on.
Not it sure on cost, but i think the wireless is a bit more expensive. Hope I have been of some help to you. Good luck with whichever one you choose. They both work well.
Same as above. I have used both with good results.
Keep in mind, both have available 'stubborn' collars. My Labs never needed it, but my Rott does not respond to the regular collars.
Negative is that it allows other animals (ie. coyote, etc depending where you are in the province) onto your property with the potential issue of your dog being "cornered" on their own property as they are wearing a collar and do not want to cross out of the property due to the level of the collar stimulation.
There is also another negative to the use of them , if your dog bolts and get outside the system as my neighbors did, it will be running loose as it will not want to get back inside the enclosed area .
This can be a very serious problem if it happens when you are not at home , your dog can then be possibly killed by vehicular traffic if it's on the road as it has not been trained to stay away from vehicles and being on the road.
Thanks for the responses guys. I appreciate the negatives as concerns, and will certainly keep them in mind. Of those who have used the buried wire kind, did you bury it yourself? how deep did you have to go? did you have trouble with breaks in the line?
The wireless is a little more money, but the ease seems to be worth it. I see that the unit can adjust to the size I need that will cover the whole yard, so maybe something to look at as well.

Forgot to add .... unfortunately another negative ... but if your dog was to bolt out of the fenced area, they may not be willing to cross back into the fenced area.
I understand the thought of invisible fencing being better for a large area. I still like a regular fence and what we did was to hard fence an airing yard area directly off the house. Dogs are out on the larger property all the time but never left out alone.
I think the positives of the system significantly out way the negatives. I would add that if you do go with an invisible fence type system don't got with the Hidden Fence brand. The battery system is a nuisance and you can get the equivalent system for nearly half the price elsewhere.
Buried it myself. Square spade shovel, for a straighter cut in the sod. 2 to 3 inches deep and then pushed it in the cut with a paint stir stick. Left it on top of the ground in my bush. Put it in an old garden hose where I took it across my driveway, again only a few inches deep. I have installed 3 separate systems this way and never had a problem with twists or breaks. The first one was still working 12 years later when I moved from that house with never a problem.
I am also considering this. What brands do you consider, other than the invisible fence brand? Are there any that are better than others?

I have used the PetSafe brand sold at CT for both my wired and wireless systems.
Both worked great, had technical support by phone when needed and could order parts on Amazon.
I buried the wires just about 1 inch in a square shovel trench. Simply pushed it in the slot and compacted by stomping.
In a cedar edge, I just weaved it around the trunks and in a fenced part I zip tied it to the top row of the fence.
I had one break in the loop a couple years ago and it was mice that ate the wire were it was not buried. Very simple fix.
If you have a big enough yard you can deal with both negatives that were mentionned above.
- Having a 2 acres yard, I dont fear my dog will be cornered as there is ample room for him to run, plus he can always retreat into my garage that has a doggy door for him.
- By running the wire only in the back-yard, if the dog was to escape (which happened a few times until I got the 'stubborn' collar) he simply returned to the front porch, which is not in the wired section. Therefore no correction for coming back home.
I have the Sport Dog under ground invisible wire system from Cabelas. Our property is about 2.5 acres. I installed it myself between 1-4 inches deep. It was a difficult install due to the large tree roots and rocks on the property. Our 2 dogs were easily trained to stay on the property but each one has crossed to either chase a squirrel or turkey. Not a common occurrence in the 2 years we have had it and they have only done that once each. Two weeks ago we had a huge wind storm that knocked down several medium size maples trees. I noticed the control unit making a buzzing noise and the loop light was out. One tree had damaged/cut the perimeter wire where it crossed a large tree root. I was able to reroute the wire under the root after soldering it. It is working fine again.
Really depends on the breed of dog you have. My buddy had a couple of huskies with high prey drive and they will kill anything that sqeaks and moves. He installed the invisible fence so while he was at work the dogs could be left outside to play on his 2 acre property. The issue he had was when they were play fighting they would sometimes end up on the other side of the invisible fence and wouldn't come back over. Since he lived in the country close to dairy farmers and sheep farmers they ended up killing some sheep and injury other sheep as well. It went to court and he had to pay damages. He was ordered to keep them in a outside kennel or crate train them while he was at work.Quote:

Secondly with a invisable fence if you leave the dog for extended periods of time, just like a regular fence. You dog will become protective if its property with humans and other animals.

Of real interest the systems also operate in the MURS frequency and like the Garmin GPS collars are technically not allowed for use in Canada. Baffles everyone how Industry Canada can still dig their heals in over approval of the GPS collars by Garmin. Yet the Invisible fences are sold retail in Canada.
Send me a PM and I will send you the Industry Canada study , or go on their site and check for approved equipment in Canada.
Not saying anything negative about the systems. My friends beagles would bolt and take the jolt. My hounds might do the same , although I'd like to try. I live on a very busy road.

Never thought of that. How ridiculous.
Underground fences are not a chance I'd take. I live on a 5 lane "highway ".
What do dogs do all day when one is at work ? They sleep. :) For me I'd rather know know they were sleeping in a decent- sized crate in my house , or outdoor kennel.
