Interesting story. My friend, who is in Ottawa on business, sent me this image this morning with a note saying that his neighbour called him to tell him that he had this buck cross the road in front of him just north of Nobleton and collapse. It wasn't hit by a car, just collapsed. What do you think could have happened? His neighbour didn't want to take it. What's the protocol when it comes to a situation like this, if you want to claim the deer?

Inspect it.
A bullet wound is far more probable than disease related sudden death.
Call and ask the MNR, if it is shot then it may be an issue but if the CO can say that you did not shoot it then most likely you will be able to take it.
I would not want to be in possession of it if it were shot but not by me and not tagged.
Probably got gunned or arrowed....
Call the MNR. I think they should be notified and possibly investigate. If it is a disease, it may affect the rest of the herd. If it is a case of someone not recovering their deer, charges should be laid.
how long has your buddy been watching the deer? could have easily been hit earlier, by a truck, gun or bow. call the mnr.
Back leg looks reddish almost bloody colour, compared to the rest of the body?
How does he kkownit wasnt hit by a car? Internal injuries that can killl can leave very little outside markings
Wont speculate on why the deer is dead but in the past to claim a road kill I called the local po po and reported it and told them I intend to take it. Once was Hamilton police the 2nd time was OPP, they took my name and phone #and gave me an report #. I did not hit either deer FWIW.
I don't have any details other than what I posted above.....I wasn't there. I wouldn't even know what to tell the MNR if they asked for more info. Could have been hit by a vehicle or could have been shot, I have no idea.
Without real details to go by I would suggest it was shot or hit by a car. Unlikely to be a disease. Dee can go along ways after an accident with a car.
Wouldn't be surprised if someone hasn't picked it up yet. deer on the side of the road simple call to opp and/or MNR to report it and back of the vehicle it goes. Picked up a few over the years never an issue.
All MNR stuff is online now, just take it home and go online to get a confirmation number, no need to even call in.Quote:

Honestly, the last number of times I called the MNR, the deer would spoil before you actually were able to talk to a human being.
A lot of bucks get injured fighting other bucks in the rut...this one may of well met his match and died from the fight in front of your friend. Sad thing to happen but it happens

This is the number to call if you dont have access to a computer and want to have the form sent.The report of possession must be made "immediately" but apparently you are allowed to transport the animal home and go online or order the form.

Doesn't need to be reported to the police. Just take it and get permit to possess online.

Bucks have also been known to die from exhaustion from the rut. Between fighting, screwing, searching for does, and being chased by hunters, they can get pretty run down.

In past MNR has just wanted the sex and location of any deer I reported. Some Monday mornings the girl in our office has 8-10 to process...
The rut may still be active and the deer could have pushed itself to the limits and dropped dead of over exhaustion? Be interesting to know what caused it.
