Blair was watching TV in his living room late in the afternoon when his dog began barking uncontrollably on the porch. He brought the animal inside to quiet it down, but the barking continued.

“I couldn’t believe how big it was,” said Blair. “It was huge.”

In fact, the animal weighed a whopping 460 lbs. — about the same size as a fully grown, adult black bear.

Blair, who lives on a wooded lot southeast of Ottawa, had never before heard of, or seen, a wild boar in the area.

“I was surprised to see it,” said Blair. “I’m even more surprised because hunting season just ended around here and not one person reported seeing one or running into one.

Despite this encounter, Blair said he doesn’t believe there are more wild boars in the area.

“I wasn’t scared or anything,” Blaie added, “but maybe it would be scary if I would have ran into it at night, I don’t know.”

Not one to waste good meat, Blair had the animal butchered for future family meals.

He has also sent the head to a taxidermist to preserve and mount it in his home.

Boars are not common in Eastern Ontario. Hog sightings have been reported east of Ottawa in the Plantagenet and Hawkesbury area, including Prescott and Russell, in recent years.

In 2014, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNRF) Kemptville district gave the green light to farmers, hunters and property owners to kill wild boars should they see any.

According to the MNRF, the feral hogs damage crops, transmit disease to domestic pigs and can be a threat to human safety.

They are not native to North America. It’s believed they escaped from farms and adapted to survive.

Wow thats a big hog! I couldnt imagine what his initial reaction was when he realized it wasnt a bear. Good for him i imagine his freezer is nice and full

Wild? Feral? Escapee? How are you supposed to know which? Or is it just shoot first and ask questions later?

460 lbs. That's even quite large for a bear. From what I've heard the meat isn't near as good as a young pig. He's going to have one big pile of sausage there.

Out this way there have been issues with feral hogs, the MNRF has given the green light and escaped animals would be fair game as well if they wandered in this case.

I have mentioned to my wife a few times, you see a wild boar that 30-30 or 20ga will do the job.

who the hell keeps a wild boar as a pet? I'm sorry but like MNRF made a statement, wild, feral or escapee should be shot as they are given green light.

We were up at the livestock auction in St Jacobs 2 Thursday's ago. I was surprised to see 2 wild hogs in the pig holding area waiting for the Tuesday auction. They were big but not like that. I sure hope the buyer knew what they were getting into. Any registered high bidder could have ended up with them. Could add new problems...

They are not kept as pets. a friend of mine used to raise them a number of years ago, they are not true wild boars as they are kept in captivity just like any other swine.
By the way , the meat was excellent , very tasty the chops have more marbling in them similar to beef steak.

There was another fellow that raised them out by Drumbo , one winter after a heavy snowfall that damaged his fences , they escaped but were all shot during that summer and during that years deer hunt.

Not me!!! That's how wild pigs get established in some areas!! He did the right thing,and the same thing 99% of us would have done. The other 1% would lie about it, lol.

Well this one was. If you ask me, they never should have been allowed to have it as a pet. Some people raise them for slaughter, but to keep one as a pet is beyond foolish.

It never crossed his mind the animal might have been a pet.

“I think I was justified in what I did,” said Blair, who only learned the boar had been a pet after the Sun published the story online on Thursday. "This couldn't be worse."

It'll be interesting to see how this one turns out...legally speaking. I know MNRF sent out green light last year, I have the email confirming that, but will the owner press the matter?

I don't think the owner has a leg to stand on as she was responsible for the pigs escape and ultimate demise. If the guy that shot it wants to be fair he could offer to share the meat with her. ;)

It looks like it is the owners loss, even if it was kept as a pet , it is up to the owner to ensure that it does not escape . A boar is not thought of as a pet , it is still livestock just as a cow or horse , the owner may see them as a pet but the onus is upon them to make sure they do not escape.

I agree Hunter John and I think the article also indicates that the "Pet" was 10 km away from home. Not to many rural people who see a boar in their yard are going to go outside and call here "piggy piggy here piggy piggy" :)

I agree. In fact, she should think about closing her mouth before someone realizes that her negligence in not containing the animal had potential for signficant damage to other property owners.

I was going to say, she could actually face charges for not contacting the MNR as soon as she knew it was loose.

Keep an eye on your "pet" if you dont want it to get shot.

He did exactly as MNRF asked him to do.

I totally agree that if anyone faces charges it will be the "pet" owner for the thing getting loose! Who in their right mind would think a wild bore is someones pet in an area that the MNR has said to shoot them or in any area for that matter...................who has wild bores for pets??????

Many years ago we deer hunted with "old man Cameron" north of Coe Hill. He lived at the end of the road just past Egan Creek and ran cows and pigs. The cows would come to the barn, the hogs would go where they liked but not out of 30-30 range. By putting out a bit of pig food he could shoot them as needed...

That woman is out of her mind. No right to keep the meat? Ha! Who does she think she is?

Here is the deal. He is exactly right in the context that the meat cannot leave his property. In accordance with the Ontario Food Safety Act the meat in question lacking a post and ante mortem inspection cannot be shared, sold or otherwise traded.
Anyone remember Mark Tijssen? ... just 40 lbs of pork in an action where two people agreed to and purchased a domestic pig together. He eventually beat them in court but the MNR has the province as a resource and they will engage in malicious prosecution.

If I was Mr Blair I would simply stop answering the phone and get back to smoking pork!

I am still surprised that MNR has not been asking how long Big Boy was loose before being reported. To my recollection there is a requirement to report a loss of a wild boar immediately.

If it is a domestic animal as claimed then home slaughter it cannot leave his property and cannot legally be donated, if it is a wild animal then it would be able to be given away.

Nice for this guy to catch them legally once again, lock up your livestock and notify the authorities if they get away as required by law, this person is nuts.
