Man's best friend, indeed. A French hunter was blasted with his own shotgun after his dog stepped on the trigger.
The 61-year-old hunter had just leaned his gun against a tree near the hamlet of Mesplede, France, on Monday to pick up a woodcock he'd shot. That's when his overexcited hunting dog knocked the gun over and stepped on the trigger.
The man was shot in the hand and forearm, Ouest-France reports. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
His son, 20, was also sprayed
Which is exactly why I break open my gun around my excited dog. Worst he can do is scratch it.

Technically if you break open the gun and the ammo is still in the chamber it is loaded and you can be charged for unsafe handling if seen.
Please show me where breaking open a gun and rendering it impossible to discharge when dealing with an excited hunting dog while hunting is considered unsafe gun handling anywhere in the game and fish act or firearms acts.Quote:

Quite apart from don't set down a loaded gun, don't lean a gun against a tree. Or anything else. That was drilled into me long ago.
And don't forget the safety on a gun ,seems that has been forgotten.
We were always taught that an open gun was a safe gun. This is why we were also taught to open your gun when meeting people in the bush. You may know that your chamber is empty or your safety on, but others can SEE an open chamber.
An unloaded firearm is the safest firearm, the gun did its job, sadly the owner did not.
The Canadian Firearms Safety Course would have you... ACTS, PROVE.
Assume every firearm is loaded.
Control the muzzle direction at all times.
Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard.
See that the firearm is unloaded - PROVE it safe.
Point the firearm in the safest available direction.
Remove all cartridges.
Observe the chamber.
Verify the feeding path.
Examine the bore
Some of the most simple firearms principles were clearly violated here.
I hope the owner makes a quick recovery and thinks about taking a refresher course for the sake of us all.
A gun is considered loaded is the cartridges are in the chamber or in the magazine attached to the gun, that is just basic, go have a read. It is safe to open the gun but the cartridges are still in the chamber and therefore the gun is loaded, so you are technically not in direct control of a loaded firearm, no different than loading it and putting it in your closet.Quote:

Still waiting for you to answer my question, Fox. Show us in the law where setting down a shotgun, broken open, is an offence.
It is still considered loaded, yes; you could be dinged for crossing a road that way while hunting. But what section of the Criminal Code applies to setting that shotgun down for a moment?
Don't tell me Careless Use of a Firearm, unless you're prepared to cite precedent.

As for whether setting down a shotgun that's been broken open breaks "the law of common sense," perhaps you'd like to explain how that firearm can discharge itself in that state.
Some of the statements made here about some ones' interpretation of some laws they heard about from somewhere as heard by their cousins, uncles, brothers friend who heard from the guy across the street who heard it from his neighbors friend a few years ago, [whew] really makes my head spin! :confused:
