Best winter boots....

I realize this has been a subject on here many times...I have done previous thread searches but also realize new products come out every year. I've just been told that a new pair of higher end boots are in store for me this Xmas for my Icefishing addiction.
Question.....Does anyone have an opinion on the brand "Wind RIver" from Marks Work Warehouse.
They have a pair for $279 that have a -55 rating, antislip "Tarantula" grip soles and Boa style lacing.
Obviously want to get the best bang for my buck so all info is welcome on this boot or any other.
Brand, style name and location of purchase would be very helpful if not too much trouble.:thumbup:

Sorry, don't have any experience with the WindRiver boots but..

Those ratings are to be taken with a grain of salt. I'm currently wearing Baffin Titans and they are rated to -100c. I wear a single pair of good wool socks and am comfortable out on the ice for the day. They are a bit heavy and "clunky" but I'm ok with that given the warmth and waterproofness. One feature that they have that I really like is a bottom insole that is waffled and about 1/4" thick. Moisture condenses on the bottom of the boot and the waffle insole keeps my liner away from the moisture. I find this to be a major advantage and will look for something similar in any ice fishing boot I buy in the future (I don't think it's exclusive to Baffin).

My feet have always been cold until I started spraying them with anti persperant.
I have a set of Baffin Titans as well and love them when on the sled or bike, just don't expect me to walk anyplace....

I have Baffins as well and they are great.

Titans as well. Watched for them to go on sale at TSC. Dry out the waffle insole and liner after each outing and they'll be your foots best friend

Best boots I've found are CKX Muk Lite by Nat's.
Very warm and weigh almost nothing.

Just make sure you buy a bigger size than normal to get those socks into and not to tight on the foot

I have Sorel's rated for -100 , keep my feet warm and dry when standing around on the ice, but like any other boot that is going to keep you warm, they are not light.

Tatins keep my feet warm best bang for your buck

I like the WR clothing, but when it comes to the foot wear I think they are not quite there yet.

Not disagreeing with your choice of boots, but the underlined statement in my opinion is not correct.
My CKX Muk Lite boots are extremely light & very warm.
-118 °F / -85°C comfort rating
Price around $100 - $130.

For sure. Those Nat's boots are something else, super light. I want to get a pair for my wife but am having trouble finding women's sizes (even really small mens or kids).

They don't make women's sizes but make men's sizes 4 through 13(even sizes only).
Mine are 2 sizes larger than my normal size.
If your wife wears women's 7 than a men's 7 should be close.

guys , something else to add to the warm boots, anyone who fishes outside all day should be looking at taking a 2'x2' square of 2" closed cell Styrofoam to stand on, keeping that layer between the ice and your boots will also help keep your feet warmer.

passed this tip off to my brother and cousin as they just got into ice fishing and complained about their feet getting cold standing directly on the ice for hours at a time.

good luck on the boots. might be looking at what Woodsman has .

I have had good results with a 2' X 2' pieces of interlocking foam pad.

Good to know Woodsman now I just need to find a place that sells the men's.

BigMac, that's a great tip. I've got two squares for my wife and a big square with a ducktape hinge in case we want to take the dog fishing.
That's where the cold will come from as a) the ice is cold and b) your weight crushes the insulation making conduction easier. That's another reason I like the waffle insole and I believe the Nat's have some air chambers in the sole (correct me if I'm wrong).

And if you fish outside and cover the hole with it (place a nice mound of slushy snow in the centre to weigh it down), you don't have to bring the auger with you in the morning. Been doing this every weekend for 10 years.

Attachment 31593I really like the dunlop purofort cold weather boots. You just have to watch out that you don't wear the lugs down too much on pavement as I find that once the lugs have been warn down, the cold weather performance is compromised. I also have a pair of insulated baffins that I find equally good.

Try the Muck boot, I've tried all kinds. This is the best winter boot money can buy. Always get a boot that is at least a size bigger than you usually wear.

I have a Wind River pair that look almost identical rated to -100 C. They are extremely warm boots and reasonably light weight.

Is anyone wonder what -100 really means?! Sounds to me a lot of BS that any brand can put on their packaging and somehow no one question. I don't think there is even a place on earth that get below -90C.
Anyway, the Titan are pretty good boots as long as you keep your feet dry.

Cant go wrong with titans. I find them really light for what they are. Much lighter than the green rubbers.

Jay after doing extensive research with Matt and Woody we have found that the 40oz bottle of gibsons rare is the best way to make any boots effective on the ice.

As for those boots in question I know at least with work boots if you don't like them marks will exchange in a week.


I have more then enough to eat at home

Oddly enough, I find with the 40 of gibby's my boots become severely ineffective LOL

By far the best boot ive seen on the ice are the Baffin Titans. I own a pair of Baffin Wolfs and I wish I got the titans solely because of the waterproof factor. As im sure you know it can get wet and slushy out on the ice and water will make it into the canvas synthetic type Baffin and Sorels. BAFFIN TITANS are where its at!!!!

Snoopedaround online and figured that was the one that you were talking about. Couldn't tell if it has a removable liner. Does it? Non removable liner is a deal breaker for me.

Best boots made, IMO........ Glad I bought a pair...... but like Pat, don't expect me to walk to far in them!

Ended up buying Baffin Impacts...probably get Titans aswell for the slushy days.

Just save yourself the headache and take them back and get the Titans. Trust me dude, been there - done that. Once you have Titans and if you still want a second pair, then get another pair of titans.

A few guys say the Baffin Titans are the best boots but don't walk too far. If you can't walk too far how can they be the best boots?

They aren't the lightest boots but I have never had an issue walking a couple KM's in them.

When I first bought them I thought the same, they feel like you don't want to walk very far in them but I put about 10km on them wandering around Simcoe once last year and have taken them on lots of 1-3 km walks across the ice, I think they are no worse that my old felt lined Baffins, as a matter of fact I think they eat my socks less than the other ones. And once you hike to your spot your feet don't feel as damp.

Best boot on the ice are military Mickey Mouse boots. They are warm even full of water.
If you watch any of those reality shows from Alaska etc, that's all you will see being worn.

Was going to try the Impacts, good for alround winter boots, not just the fishing. But with those words of advise Sauce I will definetly be picking up the Titans for fishing.

I got my Titans at Home Hardware in Minden a couple of years ago. They are great. I used to always get cold feet, but not any more... and I have poor circulation in my feet.

I went with a Baffin boota couple of years ago, the Baffin Impact -148 rated, amazing boot. Never an issue with warmth or dryness. I agree with others to buy big, an extra 1/2 size depending on the socks you wear. You need lots of circulation. I also agree that they are not the best walking boots - you're not going to set any land speed records but when you're standing around for hours warm feet is a great trade off. I think I paid $130 as they were on sale at the time. They have held up well and have always kept me warm (even with feet directly on the ice while sitting in my shelter sled). I also like the removable liner. I remove them at the end of the day to let everything air out. They are pretty big so driving with them on can be a challenge. As others have mentioned, I got one size larger then I normally wear and with a heavy sock they fit perfect. I can't stand tight boots and these are very comfortable.

I get my military mickey mouse boots at army surplus stores when I 'm in the states. If you're walking your feet will sweat but stay warm. One time late season fowl hunting I broke through the shore ice filling the boots with icy cold water. My thoughts were my day is done, but I ended up hunting all day. Great for ice fishing, but I've also worn them on bitter cold deer hunts. Now as a senior I'm finding them heavy & treacherous when dealing with hilly terrain.
