9.9 on a deep and wide?

Hey all,

Am looking into getting an aluminum fishing boat it would be my first boat I've ever owned. I've been on the water lots growing up but was always my parents boat (older Doral bowrider) or friends parents boats etc...

My dilemma is as follows:
I'm looking for a fishing boat (no recreational activities needed) and I'm looking at a max 9.9hp motor as I plan on doing some fishing on hp restricted lakes.
I like the idea of a 14' deep and wide but am wondering if the 9.9 would be a little too small for a deep and wide?

Looking for some opinions from others who have more experience with tinners.

14 ft. will work fine with 9.9 plus you can upgrade later to larger motor. The only downside is you will have to trailer it.

Will be trailer ed regardless... have an 08 Toyota Highlander. Not going to put a tinner on top of it. :)

If you stay with the light duty hulls I think you will be fine. Just look at the hp rating on the plate. My 12 (narrow, shallow) is only rated for 7-8hp but I have a 9' glass wide hull that is underpowered with my 8 hp....

I have a 20 on my 14' Yukon which is rated for 25hp and it's fine, but I would find using a 9.9 way too slow for traveling any distance. Specially if you go wide and deep. If you're on mostly small lakes maybe not as much of a concern. But if the 9.9 restriction is paramount because of those lakes then IMO get a lighter boat like patvetzal said, or if it was me I would look for one the older 15hp OMC and put a 9.9 cowling on it. Or back in the day guys would buy the 9.9 and modify it with the 15hp kit which cost similar to a new cowling. That was actually better because the model no. matched the hp on the cowling.

Been around car toppers all my life. Not that a deep and wide is a cartopper but putting a 9.9 on one is going to make that motor work overtime and use a pile of gas. Simply put you are really shortening the life span of that motor if you do a pile of running because it'll be working a lot harder than intended.
Most deep and wides are rated for at least 15 hp and up to 30 hp.

12ft narrow (thanks Fox) and 4hp Merc two stroke, can use 40 hrs on 3 gallons of gas. Moves fast enough for smaller lakes...but terrifing on bigger water.

I have a 14 starcraft sf14. A 9.9 would be way underpowered. I run a 20.

I have the same boat - a 9.9 just gets it up on plane with two guys and limited to no gear.

I have the 14 ft Princecraft rated for a 15 and it gets up and dances with my 9.9 Yam 2 stroke. Its much easier and quicker to get a longer boat on plane than a shorter one.

I have a 14 ft Princecraft ProV with a Honda 25. Motor is great for 2 adults and gear. On water such as the Spanish or French rivers this boat is wonderful. Out on Lake Erie or Ontario- not so great.

Since you're restricting yourself to 9.9HP I'm not trying to sway you ; just to give you an idea what to expect . --- My POLARKRAFT V1470 is 14' L , 70" W , 28" D and weighs 260lbs. (dry) . It's rated for 25HP , 885lbs. (4 passengers) . My gross-weight (with 15HP motor , tank , anchor , paddles , fishing-gear and myself (~ 200 lbs. +) is ~ 700lbs. --- GPS indicated TOP-SPEED 37kms/hr. --- With a 9.9HP motor it would probably drop to ~ 25kms/hr. --- Enough to outrun an upcoming STORM ??? --- Think about it .

You would have to decide between comfort and performance. A 9.9 would push the wide 14 footer but you would have problems getting on plane especially if you had another person in the boat, but for general fishing in the restricted lakes it would be fine. May also be an issue in rough weather. You can always get a larger second motor for the unrestricted lakes.
The 9.9 would perform better on a smaller lighter boat but you are sacrificing comfort.

In short, it all depends on hull design and the experience of the crew. Some people can load a boat so it will plane with a large electric motor, others need 25hp on the same hull. I've spent many hours out from Whitby in my 12' tinny being pushed by the old 2hp Evenrude. Start trolling as soon as I passed the break wall and relax until I got hungry, then spend two hours heading back downwind to get to port. Have also been out in the same sized waves in a 16' I/O and been bounced all over because I was in a hurry.
Big water is most often a problem when you combine it with big horsepower and impatience or an overloaded/poorly balanced boat.

I have a Princecraft 14' Pro V with a Honda 25 four stroke. When the boys were young there was lots of room and power. Now with three men on board with the gear, I am glad we have the Honda motor.

my fater and I ran a 9.9 on a old 75 14' crestliner aluminum it was an evinrude 2 stroke couldn't kill it ran perfect we didn't use a lot of gas and motor still kickin you will be fine. just get out and enjoy

I have a wide deep 14 and use a 20hp. My suggestion is to down size to a shallow boat. It will keep the weight down and give you more get up and go.

Ya I'm thinking about a 14ft (not deep and wide) with a 15

I have a 9.9 on my Lund deep V (Deep and Wide) with me, another passanger, gear, it gets us realiably to and from the shore, trolls down nicely, and is pretty easy on fuel/oil.

But you aren't winning any races, I think a 15 would be a nice option even up to a 20 if the boat is rated for it but I wouldn't bad mouth the 9.9 on it either.

I had exactly the setup you described and had no problem at all with a 9.9hp on it. But you need to be careful to get it setup right, I think a lot of guys don't take the time to do this.

1) Buy a long gas line so the gas tank can sit in the front of the boat, this lets you get the motor setup so the nose is down.
2) Adjust the tilt and don't be afraid to adjust it up or down depending on if you are alone or taking someone else with you, it is really awkward the first few times you do it, but eventually you can do it blindfolded.
3) Make sure the motor shaft is positioned correctly with respect to transom height. The wide boats tend to make the motor sit too low in the water resulting in more drag. You may need a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch spacer to slightly raise the motor.


The nice thing about modern technology is that it is so easy to download GPS apps for your phone that will show you accelleration and speed, so fine-tuning to get the best performance is much easier.

You won't blow the lights out with speed, but with two adults and a kid, plus a modest amount of equipment, you should get up-on-plane OK.

I used mine mostly on the St. Lawrence near Kingston.

The only difference from a 9.9 to a 15 hp is the jets in the carb. Exact same motor just jetted differently. Quick and easy.

Depending on the BRAND . Some 15's "sport" a higher displacement (ccm) .

Yeah I was going to edit my post and mention that I am no mechanic, but know a couple of people that have had it done. Thanks for correcting.
