Camo Clothing Essentials?

So a couple of weeks ago I took my OneStop course. From what I've heard, it will be quite a wait for my PAL. With that said, I have time to slowly acquire stuff I may need for hunting. And with THAT being said.. I'm greener then green (so be nice)! :)

While I understand this will be quite an open ended question, what should I be looking at in terms of clothing. Again, I understand factors such as time of year, species, location would come into play, I guess I'm looking for more of a general suggestion, as well as good brands out there.... Or does that even matter? A friend of mine said not to get sucked into the hype of getting a bunch of clothing. He said in most cases a burlap sack would be good enough... And he was being serious.

Anyways folks, I'm looking forward to hearing what ya say.

Your friend gave you very good advice. You could use camo if you plan to do mostly waterfowling or archery hunting,but,even then it's not really necessary. Your face and hands reflecting a lot of light,along with excessive movement,are the dead giveaways. Mostly,we hunt in the fall and if you look around,you'll notice that the predominant color is brown. For hunting with friends,blaze orange is your best bet and during open gun seasons for big game,it's legally required. Darker colors,warmth and weight are your biggest concerns.

Thanks Trimmer. I do understand the legal requirements for the blaze orange (or hunter orange as it's called now... Like I said, just took the course.. Still in my head.. And trying to feel a BIT smart).

I guess I'm looking more for recommendations for things such as types of clothing. At the course, the instructor said layering was key, and that he used a lot of moisture wicking items, typically Under Armour. After looking quickly at a few of those, I couldn't believe the prices of some of the stuff!

I have a scent lok camo suit for outet layer got it 1 size bigger. On supercold days its longjohns then fleece pants then light snow pants then camo. For up top t shirt thermo sweater leather jacket then camo with thick thinsulate socks and hunting boots. Wool face cover sometimes multiple layers of face coverings and warm thinsulate gloves. Camo is good for breaking up your silohette and although scent lok is not necessary mine was comparable in price to another camo suit without it plus i like the extra scent coverage. Dont go crazy on all the under armour moisture wicking stuff its not necessary but many ppl will swear by it...they are the ones who believe the more money you spend on gear the better chance you have. My camo suit is a basic layer. I could wear in summer time or in cold i layer beneath it. Went hunting with the sort that buy every layer in camo and they think they are hunters without ever shooting anything. Keep it simple use clothes you have and always keep rain gear handy. Make sure your clothing is quiet when you walk or move that is essential. Always dress for colder than it feels...once the sun goes down that last half hour can make or break you...

Dont buy anything camo you intend on keeping. What i mean is if you buy a camo cell phone case and accidentally drop your phone.....or that knife you just set down for a second that has the camo handle on it that you just cant seem to find now. For me its always been camo for clothing and not for gear. I know my luck and if its camo and im not wearing it chances are alot higher i will lose it. As for clothing itself trimmer and grizzlyadams are giving great advice.

I wear hunting coveralls, an extra size bigger with the full length body and leg zippers. That way I can control the layering underneath....you can wear your fleece sweat pants, tops, hoodies etc. I think the 'cubbies' provide greater warmth as the air stays trapped in and opening the zipper allows an easy way to ventilate when your heating up walking to your stand.

Just buy a cheap blaze orange vest for over top for the rifle season.

and Trimmer is right...it's far more about movement than it is what you are wearing. You'll understand once you watch a deer (solid colour) disappear right in front of your eyes when they stand still along the edge of a tree line.

Buy to keep warm and quiet. There is nothing worse than standing a point and being pre-occupied by cold.

Good Post to learn from. 4 yrs ago, at age 48 I did the course and started as a hunter. Here are some tidbits I have learned.

Deer:

-In a stand (box) or tree deer for the most part do not care if you have camo. (it does help for the bow hunter as you have more movement)
-Dress in layers..( what color your shirt, pants or underwear is mute…camo bib and coveralls)
-$400.00, danier boots will still give cold feet..when sitting still. (buy big enough to put hot paws heating packs). $39.99 Canadian Tire muck boots or Snowmobile work just as well.
- Make sure your coveralls cover your lower back from cold
- Good pair of gloves with cotton liners to do finger works.

Duck:

- Camo is as import as movement as is concealment in a blind or canoe!
- $40.00 duck will still call in ducks
- $40.00 goose call is wasted money, buy a good one.
- Painted goose wood shells work. (6 pack of geese is $200)
- 12 Pack of Mallards or Woddies is $89.99…why is goose more expensive???
- If shore hunting in shallows without canoe/boat, invest in good waders.
- Don’t buy into 3.5 inch or even 3” when buying a shotgun.. Buy a used old wingmaster, 878, 1100 in 2 ¾” AND wait until the ducks and geese are in range. My 870 was $400.00, but my used Model 878 (semi) in 2 ¾” was $499.00 (bit high, seen since for under $400.00)
- New semi (cheap) start at 800+
- 2 ¾” is cheaper than 3”, and way cheaper than 3.5” shot..period.

Rifles:

- By used if you can 30% jump in prices with the fall CAN $$.
- Savage Axis 2 Line is best bang for the buck out of the box. I swear by this product line…find them used if you can.
- Buy your gun on these principles: Distance I expect to shoot, Caliber restrictions in your, price. Consider the cost of ammo, look on the shelf at local store and see what prices are.
- Common (value) calibers 308, 30-06 and 30-30 are standard cheap rds
- 270, 7MM, 300, 22-250, all very pricey and purpose designed.
- Shotguns, consider a triple barrel combo pack, Bird Barrel, Turkey Barrel and Slug barrel. This combo package, will allow you to hunt, small game, ducks, geese, deer with one gun…good point.

For me this is my list:

$15.00 Camo pants: Giant Tiger (grouse do not care if you are wearing Under Armor)
$59-69 on sale Can Tire (yukon brand) Camo coat, camo bib coverall (insulated).
$39 Can Tire Snow boots and Muck boots
$1 store cotton liners and CT Camo Gloves with flip fingers.

All my guns (27) are used except Rem 870 Triple Combo Pack and Savage Axis in .223.

Fully agree with line here...new is over rated unless your made of money. Stick to the basics and ask for advice on here about specifics I have learned tons to the people on this forum especially for the close to home info. Always research what u buy long before you buy it for ex I spend 9 months picking out a rifle and went with a Savage. I have a buddy just started out bought all new gear he didnt need and didnt know how to use it we go up north and he was lucky to get even a grouse on the second shot not to mention his rifle was shooting 3 feet high and to the left didnt know crap all about his weapon so dont be that guy read read read and dont always listen to everything you hear lots of old myths out there about various stuff

One thing I have come to appreciate over the years is a fleece or down filled vest. It keeps your trunk warm but doesn't add bulk to your arms which is important to a bow hunter. I will also say remember to underdressed a bit when walking in because if you get overheated and sweating you will be cold all day. Once you get to your stand add layers as needed.

Your smart to ask on here. So many others simply watch a couple hunting tv shows or read a couple hunting magazines to "learn" what they need to hunt and end of spending thousands of dollars just to go on their first hunt.

Biggest piece of advice. Camo isn't a name brand. Camo is to break up the outline of your body. Clothes that keep you warm, dry and are breathable are more important than a name brand or an exact color match to your surroundings.

To start hunting you need a rifle/bow, sharp knife, bino's, comfortable boots and clothes that keep you warm and dry. All else gear can wait for the most part.

x2 on staying still and make a habit of slow deliberate movement in a stand or a blind, everything picks up fast movement, try to stay down wind when hunting big game and coyotes or fox and up wind for waterfowl as they like to land into the wind.

If it keeps you warm while standing beside an outdoor rink all day, then it will probably keep you warm sitting in a tree stand, no matter what colour it is....I wear the same gear cutting firewood ( not splitting), plowing snow on a tractor or sitting in my blind. It is the temperature and activity LEVEL that are more important than the brand or colour design.

The essential for me is a waterproof/breathable CAMO bibs and 3 season jacket of good quality (Gore-Tex or similar fabric, no BP or Cabela's own waterproof fabric), an early fall and a winter rubber boots (does not need to be expensive at all), and some waterproof/warm gloves. For the layering you can use whatever you have at the beginning....
The bibs and jacket are the expensive pieces of the puzzle but it will makes the all experience a lot better.

Base layer, buy what you can afford. Polypro will get the job done, later you may want to upgrade to a merino wool.

I take issue with the .270 Win as being pricey....usually it's the same as .308, 30-06, etc. But as most on here will attest, unless you're in an area with a CF Caliber restriction, I always advocate for the .308.

Going to go against the grain here and suggest those who say what you wear isn't important are the people giving you "bad advice" and or who are saying "don't listen to people who say you need or want" good or expensive stuff. In my real world experience, people who only favor, argue, recommend one thing.....

How much good is your $750-$1500 bow, or $400 scope, or $150-$250 range finder, or $1,000-$2,000 Shot gun doing you when.

A) It's miserable out and you decide to stay on the couch watching tv?
B) It's cold and wet out and you decide to call it a day 2 hours earlier
C) Worst case scenario (maybe your lost, maybe you trip and break your ankle, maybe XYZ) you end up spending an unplanned night in the bush....

Nuff said.

A $500 Scope or $1,000 (Rifle, Shot gun, Bow) does jack for me when its in the gun cabinet.

My outdoor cothing, from base layers/boots, to mids and outers are what allow me to go out and stay out...And worst case scenario.........

Is it worth it?

That's hard to answer. For me, obviously it is. Having just returned from 10 days in 47 archery hunting, even in this extremely mild, no snow on the ground year...THis year average temp was around 4-5 degrees...Previous years avg temp is -10 to -15 and one year I was spending 6hrs day in a stand when it was -25.

So we basically hunted in spring this year...And it rained constantly for the better part of 4days.
toasty warm and dry through out..

Am I recommending Sitka?
Nope, not by a long shot.

Just that what we choose wear and use is what gets us out, keeps us out and safe.

Clothing depends on time of year and game hunted so over the years you will accumulate many different setups. Upland hunting in early season has no similarities to hunting deer in a stand in November. Most camo is fashion anyway so don't get too wrapped up in that unless you bowhunt or waterfowl hunt. Buy good gear from the beginning and it will treat you well.

Good for you to benchmark before you spend a lot of money on something that is a) garbage or b) unnecessary.
However, unless you don't answer this question to yourself you still might end up buying something that is not useful to you. Forget the idea of buying one set of perfect clothing for all seasons and all types of hunting/game - it doesn't exist (or at least I have not found it).
My clothing for late season deer is very different than what I wear for early waterfowl than what I wear going upland hunting.

General suggestions: camo patterns are overrated, fleece and wool are your best friend when it is cold and I always think twice what socks, shoes and hat I put on for the day.

Just to add to what others have said... Try to find some 100% wool pants/shirts/jacket for your middle layer. It's getting harder to find new so have a look in second hand and surplus stores.

After years of trial and error I've settled on: Wool blend or fleece base layer. No cotton! Heavy wool middle layer (pants and 2x wool shirts). Wind proof/rain proof outer layer. I'm currently using a pair of non-insulated bib pants and the shell from one of those 3-in-1 jackets. The wool middle layer does the insulating.

Good socks (x2 or 3 pairs) and boots that don't fit too tightly (room for blood circulation) are more important than how much you spend on boots IMO.

If you have a long walk in to your stand, carry your outer layers in your pack and put them on when you get there. If you have a really, really long walk to your stand and can't avoid sweating on the way in - wear a base layer that you can change out of when you get there and switch out for your dry, quality base layer. Keep the wet stuff in a plastic bag in your pack (but don't forget about them when you get home or you'll regret it). Nothing gets you cold in hurry like a wet base layer.

I do a lot of hunting and don't own any fancy clothing. As was stated many times, dressing in layers is the key to keeping you warm

Camo is nice but... movement or the lack of movement and wind is much more important.

Dressing in layers for me means (even on the most coldest days-this is my setup)
Light t-shirt ($5)
Over size heavy hoody ($25)
Camo Jacket ($60)
PJ pants used as long-johns ($10)
Work pants (cottons okay-no jeans or polyester) ($20)
Camo bib overalls ($65)
Light pair of socks ($1)
Heavy pair of socks ($14)
One size larger boots with liner ($75)
A nice toque that can also be worn as a face mask ($15)
A thin pair of gloves ($1)
A heavy larger pair of mitts to go over the gloves ($60) or
A hand warmer (muff-which I like better than mitts) ($30)
Some hand warmer inserts to stuff in the muff ($1 each)

Plus something to sit on, stool-seat-cushion ($10-$35)
and you should be good to go....

Now most times I hunt within an hour of my home, so getting wet, rained on or getting super cold usually isn't that great of a concern because I know within an hour or so I can go home and warm up/dry up rather quickly. No big deal but if I was camping in the outdoors for a week in a tent, things might be different, but for me, this setup suits my needs just fine.

If you have to spend the day out there under the rain, a CT or Giant Tiger out fit won't do it.

That's right. Accumulate slowly and buy quality clothes and it will last for years.

buy good quality fleece, north face ,mec etc if you are warm you will enjoy your self more dress in layers ....

very true. experienced this a lot of time first hand.

I bought some of the gear primarily to get rid of layer wearing. if you're out in the field, uncomfortable, noisy clothes and frustrated. You'll understand what you'll need through experience.

I can't begin to count the number of times that I've hunted with people that spent a bat shyte crazy amount of money for "designer" cold weather gear only to wind up stinkin' sweaty and 3/4 frozen stiff and miserable. I've been with guys that spent $300 for "down-filled" parkas only to have branches and raspberry vines rip it to shreds first time out with feathers poofing from here to next week with every step which is truly hilarious.

I can't believe how much thought goes into this, I guess not many guys work outside anymore.

Wisdom here.

Ah man dont get pulled into the rookie quest for camo. I did that when i was first getting into hunting. But now im actually trying to de-camo a bit, it becomes excessive. Just look back at the greats like Fred Bear, he usually wore a green and black plaid shirt with green pants and he took tons of game. Keep it basic.

So as everyone has pointed out, CAMO is not necessarily an essential. Yes it does help, but there are other contributing factors for success. I was in the same boat a year ago and i dropped some money on the camo outter wear and i enjoy wearing it. I know for a fact it helps with my waterfowl hunts.

As others have said, sitting still is key as most game animals have extraordinary eye sight. To do that in a spring turkey or a fall deer hunt you have to be able to regulate your body temp and wick mositure away.

I may have just started hunting but years of backcountry skiing, winter camping (tent), snowshoeing etc has taught me how to deal with body heat and perspiration on a very important level as it could lead to major issues when in the backcountry.. The UA products work great and do cost a lot of money, but there not the only brand out there. Merino wools are fantastic and again lots of brands that will set you back $$$$ but you have options.

If your not familiar with the new age technical clothing do a quick google search about layering. You will be suprised at how in depth some articles are and how easy it is to apply a camping, skiing, snowshoeing concept to the sport of hunting. Just think of the weather patterns we have.

If your on a budget, I would highly recommend the store MEC (it's my adult toys R' us) as they have their own merino wool line and can get some clearance items (remember the color is hidden as its an underlayer) and the other place where i have found some great shirts and base layer merino/socks is Costco.... all wick moisture away helping regulate body temp making your long sit more bearable and keeping you warm and dry means less movement.

Now count how many times you've heard people gripe about spending X on crap that doesn't work as advertised or remain water proof, blows seems and zippers.

I bet they far outnumber the number of complaints about spending more and tearing it on a branch or unseen barbed wire.

I have a pair of Sitkas 90% pants (just one item among many). I mention these specifically because I have put by now thousands of hours in them, a lot of it...hard use they are 7 years old now. I use these pants for everything from hunting, when Im chasing WTs with my camera, to fishing spring through fall, camping with the kids and more.

They are like new and no blown seams, no loose threads, no blown zippers, etc, etc. In fact when I was in a rifle camp back in Nov amongst about a dozen hunters and many asked me about Sitka...All of them were blown away when I told them the pants I was wearing were 7 years old and had seen thousands of hours of use.

Also have Sitkas "Incinerator" set for my late season hunts. Down filled bibs and jacket with goretex. Haven't over heated once.
Then again wearing good technical clothing that's vented, breathes and base layers that wick moisture.....

Again, don't take the above as a recommendation to go out and spend good coin, as that's whats needed.

But if a scope that only makes a difference, once or a few times a year is worth $300. And sits in a cabinet......Or six rifles and 2 shot guns (can only use one at time) and is worth many thousands......

Isnt good clothing you can wear and abuse, that gets you out, keeps you out and worst case...
Worth the same?

Always shake my head that so many wont blink at spending $300 to $1,000 on a scope........But not good clothing, or a $300 jacket.

For the average guy who hunts a week or two a year the Carhartt will last them a life time...if not you could replace them almost 4x for the same cost.

No need to buy a Lamborghini when a Toyota do the same thing.....

Hence why I'm stressing I'm not recommending it. That said, "good clothing" and there are alternatives..
I can and will vouch for it, I wear and use quite a bit, but its not for me to say it's worth it and I wont try to "convince" anyone to go out and get it.

Lets call what it is. People will spend tons of money on hardware, gidgets and gizmos.
No one blinks at spending $750 to $1,200 on an Excal. Say $200 on a range finder, another $150 on a game camera, and many other things....hundreds of dollars on Scopes and red dots and more...

But when it comes to their outdoor clothing.........

If your on a budget, I would highly recommend the store MEC (it's my adult toys R' us) as they have their own merino wool line and can get some clearance items (remember the color is hidden as its an underlayer) and the other place where i have found some great shirts and base layer merino/socks is Costco.... all wick moisture away helping regulate body temp making your long sit more bearable and keeping you warm and dry means less movement.

the one thing to add is that although the same principles apply (layers, moisture, temperature, etc.) , the typical hiker outfit is not made for hunting; e.g. it might be noisy if you move, colours might be bright, it might be not as durable in heavy brush, it might not be as warm if you sit still etc.

You are definitely correct!!!
The message I was trying to relay is the importance of Base Layers and that n there Is a ton of options other then UA which is a good product but costly. The OP had mentioned his instructor referring to layering and UA. Most people ha e a good hike into there spot and sweat is the enemy come November when Temps are low Except this year HAHA...

Good luck with your hunts and live and learn. What works for some doesn't feel right to others.

I guess if you work in an office all day, you don't get acclimatized to the weather so you have to over compensate when all of a sudden you have to spend 3-4 hrs sitting outside. Guys who work outdoors don't seem to put much effort into staying warm. Most of the guys at our camp work outside for a living so the cold doesn't bother them much so no one wears anything fancier (more expensive) than Carhartt type bibs and jackets...mind you that was back when it was cold and we had snow down during rifle week, haven't seen that in many years.

I should mention, if you want to save some money and buy quality stuff...head to an Army surplus store. Clothing designed to meet mil-spec...can't go wrong.

I generally recommend surplus stores for newer hunters as well. Quality stuff and if they happen to decide to "upgrade" their gear in the future, they're usually not out too much money. Some of the stuff I'm still using came from Mark's Work Warehouse and the local surplus store and has lasted years and years. Can't say the same about some of the "higher end" stuff I've bought.

I look for quiet material on the outside. If you rub it together and it makes noise it's a dead giveaway that something unnatural is there. Otherwise make sure to have appropriate layers to manage cold/heat. Moisture wicking base layer is critical to staying warm on long cold hunts.

There's lots of guys that I hunt with that wear and use mil-spec......then again....some of them are still able to use the QM too.....

I have not browsed the entirety of the responses. but to the OP, i would say, STOP WORRYING OR THINKING ABOUT CLOTHING. if you have to double check your clothing, you're doing something wrong. if you're a good hunter, you will fill your freezer wearing blaze orange from toe to tail. stop thinking about clothes, start thinking about animal.

The best brand to buy is the one on sale. I'd say about 99.9% of hunting clothing in stores is manufactured in sweat shops in Asia (yes Sitka too) so really the price you're paying is based on your perception of quality and isn't really a reflection on actual quality.

Buy clothing for what you intend on using it for. If you're planning on shooting pheasants you're going to need completely different gear than you would for bow hunting deer in the winter. You've really only got a week until this years hunting season is finished so instead of rushing out and getting gear, take some time to make plans and figure out what you want to hunt.

A couple tips when you do have a plan together, if you're buying clothing and you want something waterproof, buy anything with a Gore-Tex liner as it has a lifetime warranty. If you wan't warm base layers don't buy underarmor, buy Merino Wool, it's close to the same price but warmer. A warm jacket underneath a light camo fleece jacket or camo shell is an alternative to a potato sack.

Just my opinion but having high quality clothing can make or break a hunt. For years I bought and wore cheaper clothing and I can definitely say I had more miserable hunts than enjoyable ones. I don't skimp on clothes that I plan to use hunting now but everything I do buy is a neutral earth-tone color so I can also use it for daily wear.
I'd rather hunt with old cheap guns and bows. Now if I were on a once in a lifetime Sheep or Mountain Goat hunt then it'd be a different story.

Probably the worse advice is "coveralls" of any sort,you will know what I mean if you had one to many Timmies before hunting to keep you awake.You have to remember your bodily functions,if you need a pee in your deer stand 20 feet up and your wearing coveralls with no zipper,guess what.Some even wear braces to hold their pants up,very inconvenient.

I wear bibs.. no problem with bodily functions.. #2 is more difficult.. but mine has a fly zipper.. so #1 is nice and easy.

Stop holding it in.

Under armour is garbage.....works well down to -1 or so. It's good point is wicking the sweat away from the body...regular long Johns and old fashioned under shirt work the best, I have 3 expensive sets of underclothes thaat people have bought for me cause I work in the intense cold by times....and they stay in the closet. Hali Hansen has some good stuff, but at a price.

Buy good gear.....save up to get it, it's worth it. Cheap gear will always let you down when you need it. Research stuff on forums and not on sales reviews.....you don't want to get info on a product that someone is getting paid to talk about it in a good or bad fashion.

The local thrift shop provides most of my layering garments (wool). Cover that with goretex for rainy or cooler days.

Never owned a stitch of camo in my life and have taken plenty of critters. I agree with others that layering is key, for me that means wool and gore tex.

I can speak with some authority about "perceived" quality. I have not one piece thats fallen apart, blown a seam or zipper, torn...let me down.

How many hours in my mountain set which I wear, use and abuse all seasons, all activities (including painting the house....see the white mark on the right pocket in the fall 2015 image...doh) for many years and still look, and perform like new? I'm sure thousands by now

re quality...the same can be said for Carhartt products, designed for the working man. I have duck fabric clothing that see's daily wear and after 10+ yrs working around the farm are still good, seams intact and zippers work.... They represent great quality at 1/3 the cost of Sitka.

I'm 8 yrs into my favorite TreeBark hunting coveralls, made by Winchester (U.S.) and they are still in great condition, seams sippers all in excellent condition...paid $75 (including s/h) for them on eBay :)

Unless your one of those guys that wear your Camo shopping at CT every Sat and washing your truck in, most hunting gear will last the average hunter (2 weeks of wear) many years. When worn for hunting, most guys only need new stuff when you can no longer close the zippers due to food indulgences and lots of beer :)

As Ive maintained Mike, there are alternatives. Is it "worth it". Well that depends, on many things. Things I can't answer.

Can speak to it's comfort (in all seasons). Those pants for example are seriously comfortable, and if weren't for the "camo" Id wear them as casual pants (out to movies, about town,...kinda like jeans except more comfortable and more durable). I have jeans that haven't lasted anywhere near as long (thread bare or blown zippers etc).

Can certainly speak to its durability. I abuse those pants and other item given what I do, in all seasons. And when Im on a job (being paid for my time and expertise)...I don't have the option of saying "not today, its too windy...too wet). I have to deliver rain or shine and Im out in all seasons, all conditions.

Other items are bought for specific purposes.
Most people chirping about Sitka (its quality or price) might not bat an eye at a Canada Goose jacket. Either for themselves or their spouse/lady friend.

I have the same in the Incinerator and waterfowl. 700 fill power goose down....plus....goretex. Only difference being its designed with hunters in mind. Meaning they have features Canada Goose doesn't...Extra length and durable material for when sitting, say in a john boat and its pouring rain or there are whitecaps. Pockets and inside pockets designed with hunters in mind for shells, for this, for that and gizmos. Fleece around the neck and when zipped up will cover your face to...Hand inserts that partial cover the hand so only fingers really are exposed, and neoprene cuffs that can be cinched when its pouring rain. Oh and vents from rib cage to elbow so you don't overheat...oh and.....See below pic

Ask anyone who owns a Canada Goose which range from $700 to $1200 if they are worth it. I bet those people don't sit for 3 to 6 hours in a tree when its -30 or freezing rain or during a blizzard and try to remain still.(been there, done that many times) .;) But every one of them will say they are the warmest they've ever owned. And they probably baby them, don't bushwhack or other in them :)

~Extra material on the waterfowl jacket for your backside when sitting.
~Extra length on the core shirt that partially covers the hand and thumb hole so its doesn't ride up when wearing more layer or can go over thin gloves...handy when spring bear hunting and theres no see-ums drawing blood.
~Outers and jackets with vents, so you don't over heat. In this case it makes getting into and out of Bibs very easy. Nov rifle hunt somewhere a little below freezing. 90% pant for a little warmth and moisture wicking ($100 jeans don't do that) and Bibs that zip from hip to cuff in both directions so you can vent while humping...fully or just around the crotch.

For most guys I quite agree, no need for the stuff and it is expensive. Doesn't mean its not worth it, or its not durable, or it doesn't do what its supposed to ( and like most I have spent a lot of money on outdoor wear over the years that didn't......)

Layers are most important things.
Base layers should wick moisture and regulate body heat
Mid Layers are for insulation, warmth
Outer layers are the first line of defence against the elements. Wind, water, Cold

"Camo patterns" are largely marketing ploys for fashion statements.

Like many have said here, use good base layers to keep warm. I push through a lot of brush when I hunt, so I like ripstop fabric for pants, shirts, and light jackets. I buy they when they are on sale and they are mis matched. I have OD 5.11 pants, several long sleeve realtree t shirts, and a woodland cammo light jacket. My parka came from Sail make by Ganska it has a cammo pattern with a lot of brown oak leaves on it. I wear that for deer. You don't need the latest and greatest under armour fashion cammo, or break the bank getting a hightech suit. I have a friend who dropped $700 on a Kryptek cammo outfit for ducks. It was advertised as waterproof. The first rainstorm he was in showed him it was not waterproof. I have a old uncle who has been hunting for 60 years. He wears jeans and a CPO jacket.

I have more camo coats pants than I could wear in a season due to the range of hunting we do. A lot of this stuff has been accumulated over 25 years of hunting and I hunt in the fall from the day duck opens till dec 31 with my compound.

I also have a farm which keeps me outside all season long in various temps as well. I try not to wear my hunting clothes for any farm or logging work As it doesn't matter how expensive they are they would be destroyed in less than a year, you get hydraulic fluids or diesel gas or metal grinds or welding sparks on your fancy camo 700$ they ain't gonna last or leave a strange odour in the woods. Big difference between sitting still in the woods taking pictures than jumping up and down on a tractor rigging logs in -30 ! I bought a new set of insulated overalls second day logging the heavy duty zipper was destroyed !

This year I treated a friend of mine got a deal on M12 heated Milwaukee coats so I bought a camo hoodie n coat. 180 for both .

They work great I combod the hoodie with a new set of redhead camo insulated overalls for 150$
And comfortably bow hunter till the last day of season. Some days not even turning the m12 on !

My camo camp hunting overalls still look brand new, my farming overalls after 6 weeks look like 6 years old !

Given the above comment I can only assume that was directed at someone. I should hope so, anyone jumping up and down in a tree when it's -5 (forget -20) sure wont be seeing many deer. The only hunters I know who do that, are cold and climb down out of the stand, walk a little or do jumping jacks to get some circulation going..........

Look, if anyone wants to question whether an outer coat is worth paying $300 for or $500 for. Is it better to spend $150 and get something that may not be as well designed, or live up to the hype or xyz. Only the buyer can answer that for themselves.

What I might suggest when anyone is considering what to wear. Think fit, form and function...Aka layers and comfort. Some are ok with mis matched pieces that gather and pinch (because they aren't cut and designed with layers in mind), others are ok if they end up looking like the michlin tire man, than wonder why they sweat like pigs....walking to from stands....

When asking yourself well, how much am I willing to spend on an outer coat or base layers. Ask yourself what your willing to spend on a scope for that shiny new $1,000 rifle that sits in a cabinet most of the year.

If your budget says well I'd think $400 for a scope and $200 for a range finder and $200 for a game camera.

I think the stuff I can wear all year, that's well designed, and keeps me comfortable in all kinds of weather and stuff. Is worth atleast that much to. I can wear it shoveling the snow, walking the dog. Fishing be it spring, summer fall or winter, camping spring summer fall or winter, and with my "reality" which isn't everyones...when out with my cameras for fun (personal) or when on someones elses time and dime and I don't get to say....Ug, its freezing cold and wet out, lets go another day. Or I have to sit perfectly still for hours....Cant imnagine how you would feel if a trophy buck or Tom or rabbit, or Yote finally came into to sight and I moved because I was uncomfortably...

Oh and did I mention its great when hunting with that scope that only comes out a few times a year, that I thought was worth more than the clothes I wear that me keep warm, dry, on the worst of days?

Some don't and that's ok to.

What I can say and speak to, is at least this much, having worn and abused quite a bit of it is as anyone can see in the pictures or in person if they want to.
a) works as advertised and is very well designed for hunters
b) Its durable
c) its very comfortable


Worht it? Cant answer that.
And yes its not the only option, lots of perfectly fine options out there.
