Getting stuck with another long-gun registry bill

Got the Ontario Out of Doors today. in it is an article, "Quebec To Implement Long-Gun Registry," I didn't find that particularly bothersome, if Quebec wants to waste the money to set up an other useless bureaucracy around a long-gun registry, so be it. One might go so far as to wish them well, until you hit the crunch line of the article. "It appears the Quebec government is looking to get it(the registry) paid for by the feds. The federal government says they are going to support the Quebec gun registry." Here we go again, billions more of our tax dollars to be squandered on what was formerly admitted to be an absurdity, and less than useful long-gun registry. If Quebec wants it, than they should bare sole financial responsibility for it. I don't recall J.T. making mentioning of this during his election campaign. In his mandate, he never sought nor was he voted in, to again waste our tax dollars, in such a ridiculous venture? Just my humble opinion.

I will believe it when I see it but throwing money at Quebec's special interests is nothing new for the liberals. I am concerned but to me this is still fear mongering and I am worried more about reclassification than a registry, eg. No pumps , no semi's , regardless if rifle or shotgun. Like Australia.

Well I have never heard of a Liberal who didn't want to waste money.

I suspect what we will see is Quebec will start it's registry and then once they start to get it going they will ask other provinces if they would like to jump in as well for a fee. Knowing that Ontario Liberals do prefer to waste as much money as possible they would surely sign on.

Something else that I wouldn't be surprised to see is if the province of Ontario banned hunting with semi's, which they can do if they so wish, just like some areas are shotgun only for deer.

Have not read that OOD report yet, but from what I've seen the Liberals did not promise to fund Quebec's registry, only to "support" it in unspecified ways. This in contrast to the previous government which of course would have done nothing to support it.

I'll get concerned about this when the budget is released, and we actually know where the dollars are going, and how many dollars are involved.

Right from the CBC:

Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Ralph Goodale confirmed that the federal government is open to assisting Quebec if it can.
"Per our commitment, we will work in partnership with the Quebec government to determine how we may best support their efforts," he said in a statement.
Ottawa will not re-establish a federal long-gun registry, Goodale added.

The Libs will not start a Federal registry but "assisting" is usually code for money. Even if you don't cut them a cheque allocating manpower to assist costs the same. A registry requires unionized civil servants to run it. It's not about protecting people. It's all about payback to the unions for their electoral support. In the end even if Provincially run there will be registries and more Liberal voters. Throw in his coming ranked ballot and just like Wynne we are now stuck with Liberals Federally forever.
Gun registries have never been about safety. Punishing people who are already following the law and hugging those that aren't following it is politics pure and simple. We have an effective PAL system which is all you need to weed out those who shouldn't own guns because we all agree that not everybody should own them. Running a database of what is owned is wasted money, money we don't have.

Agree assistance = CASH. What do expect from the LIBERALS, I have know idea how they got in federally. As far as Ontario, it was obvious that if you cater to GTA you will win and screw the rest of the province. Thanks you GTA

The Chritien Liberals were well known for passing on extra money to Quebec. I suspect this would first be done quietly by increased payments under the name of something else.

Try and keep up. This thread is about a gun registry although you are free to accuse him publicly because that didn't cost us much money last time when he sued Cretien and won big $$ We can start another thread and compare scandals with Cons/Libs.

Today's order of business:

1. Speculate.
2. Treat speculation as fact.
3. Get upset about it.

When the Government states publicly they will support Quebec's registry I think we have moved past speculation. After Obama's televised gun control show last night I wouldn't be surprised to see JT jump on the bandwagon even if we already have a sensible and effective background check system here. if today's polling on that show showed support I have no doubt we are in for more misdirected gun control shortly. It would be a good deflection away from the coming fiscal nightmare he is planning.
The thing is America and Canada are apples & oranges when it comes to gun control. I can't for the life of me understand why they oppose effective background checks down there. The whole gun show thing doesn't have to be a dangerous loophole nor does every guy who sells guns have to be a licensed dealer. Our PAL system solves all this and any registry is just smoke and mirrors after a gun owner is awarded a PAL. If America went to a PAL system it would go much further into satisfying the anti gunners and wouldn't remove guns from those who should be allowed to have them. In the end nothing will ever prevent tragedies ans many of the maniacs who commit mass murders do it with legally bought guns.

Some states, such as Connecticut, have brought in permit-to-purchase, which is essentially an FAC system. As you point out, it works.

100% agree with you Doug,almost every topic here starts "undercover" and immediately goes to a anti liberal attack.Liberals such as myself get banned from the "off topic" section and when we make a reply on another section it gets moved to off topic.Caltek should be well aware by now that this forum cannot continue this censorship,either allow both views or none.In relation to the OP if the duly elected Federal Government wants to assist the taxpayers in Quebec with this issue I support them.

Will just say this much.

As a gun owner, a registry doesn't bother me too much, to each their own. I see it as an inconvenience. That said, I also see it as a colossal waste of resources that was utterly ineffective . That was during good economic times when we didn't have to be very careful about where we allocate funds and resources. These days....What a joke if they bring it in in some form or other...We have far, far, far, far more pressing needs...

Like vets that are homeless, suicide rates that make gun deaths look ridiculous. Healthcare is a joke and many more pressing issues (unemployment in ONT and ALTA) and on and on and on....

However.

As we know in Ontario and previous administrations be they Provincial or Federal. Restraint, priorities that are sound are never high on their list. They do love to spend and they do love to pander to their friends. Thats hardly speculation, its cold hard fact that all Liberal admins spend a ton of money on their strongholds....Quebec Federally and GTA provincially.

So "supporting" could mean many things. Some weeks ago there was a lot of speculation about their platform and just how GC JT might be..

While their definition of support remains to be seen. Today, hard to argue that those with concerns have more basis to think theres an agenda, than those who argued it was nothing but fear/chicken little.

A statement from the Feds a long the lines of Que can do what they want, but we won't be involved. Would have put it to bed, or been a step in the direction of "See, nothing to be worried about"

As for the rest.
Perhaps, but to date those who are very critical of the Libs have been right far more often than wrong. And those who believed in McGuinty, and then Ms Wynne argued against the spending, economy, scandals, ineptitude, pandering to Unions, etc...

So is there are decided right bias here..absolutely and sometimes it goes to far. However, at least provincially, Ms Wynne and friends have trashed the province and more....Proof is in the pudding.

Cons, NDP, or Libs I just don't trust any of them not to bring back the LGR if it is perceived to buy votes. Parties do not set policy as to benefit the common good or common sense but rather to what will get them re-elected.

Not sure how you see the Feds laundering money to Quebec the same as Mulroney screwing over the German guy for cash payment for lobbying services the week he left office. Mulroney may have been a sleeze there but he was a private citizen and attempts to slander him got him one of the largest ever court settlements in Canadian history. Nothing Political on Mulroneys part there just personal greed.

yeah Mulrooney was an issue. But let's see the Chretien government stole much more around 1 billion + and Ontario Liberals over 200 Billion. Were you afraid to admit that. I will add that the new Trudeau government will probably aim for 500 Billion.

Federally, I've voted Liberal far more than I've voted Con. But I always have had a hate on for vote buying/pandering and when it goes too far..The Fed liberals pander hard to Quebec...The same could said of the Cons pandering to the West (Harper especially).

However, if theres anyone to thank for it, it's PET who really ramped it up both pandering to Que and pissing off, alienating western Canada (Wheat Control board)

That works both ways....most people I know in real life (as opposed to the internet) would find OOD to be a bunch of liberals. I guess it depends who you associate with. But it is an outdoors forum and while fishermen tend to cover the spectrum left to right, hunters tend to be to the right. When compared to the real hunting forums I frequent, mostly American - OOD members are waaaaaay to the left on their views.

Re the gun registry and its 2B cost. I've spent the last 35 years developing custom software systems - and the 2B cost is way out of line - more than an order of magnitude. It would be impossible to spend more than a couple of hundred million on the registry - and that's including the buildings and staff for the life of it.

Someone stole a pile of money - plain and simple.

Actually this thread was introduce on a manners of political transparency and trust, we live in a democracy, which is government of the people, by the people, for the people. When a political party says they are not going to do something, and achieves a mandate to govern, based upon said premise. Then turns about to offers support, for the very same thing to be done by a different level of governs, that show a real want of political transparency. It has all the appearance of deceiving the people at the very onset. The people who entrusted them to govern. Here the Liberals have a choice, if they were really sincere about bolstering transparency, and that is simply to withdraw any thought of support for Quebec’s long-gun registry. Other wise any support they give mortal or financial, without seeking a mandate from the people to do so, should be an open door, to them getting well bashed. Democracy is not government of the people, by the people, in spite of the people. When will they finally come to that realization.

To many of us, hunting and fishing and the outdoors is not "something that is of little consequence in the grand scheme of things".
If I didn't hunt/fish/boat/cottage - I could retire and spend the rest of my life doing ...well things of "more consequence in the grand scheme of things".

Whatever the heck this "grand scheme of things" is... I always thought the "grand scheme of things" was finding more ways to spend time outdoors hunting/fishing/boating/cottaging...

You're starting to sound like Hec Clouthier's speech at the Pembroke Sportsmen club when he told them the should not worry about the gun registry and should "get a life". The speech has kept Cheryl Gallant getting re-elected every election since then - 15+ years or so now? Those are the people I identify with...and you won't find them online because they are too busy out there in the real world to bother with it.

If my non hunting friends and I have many, some of whom are either anti or anti TH, can't or won't discuss hunting with me and I have to feel as though its taboo with them. They aren't my friends to begin.

Friends you should be able to talk about anything. Good friends can do so, even when on polar opposite sides. It's not about agreeing, or avoiding the topics. It's about respecting people and their perspectives even when in disagreement.

Man life would be boring if I couldn't discuss politics, religion, hunting, sex, same sex, or any other topic people sometimes feel they shouldn't talk about, especially with friends.

The liberals haven't earned my trust. One JT is mostly show without substance and the people behind him.......Then as with most all politicians a great number of his campaign promises have already been punted. Say what you have to get elected, then you can always back off and claim

Its proving to be more difficult than expected "international agreements" ( legalizing pot) check
Its proving to be harder (Refugees) check
Its proving to be harder...taxing the rich, breaks for the middle class and um.....something called reality and revenue shortfalls. Check

We know the relationship with Que. We know or should know a big reason they got trounced in 2011 is because Que went to the NDP....Hence a great need to secure that block. See also stealing seats from under the NDP in the Atlantic with ship building contracts.(vote buying).

We know Wynne will lick his feet for money....
We know all politicians like things they can either hide, or enact but optically their hands are clean. See Wynne and OPP 8.5% raise. Thats being passed on to peons through municple taxes, not provincial.

Ditto Wynne, who has already used transfer payments (supposed to be for healthcare) for other things and her friends.

In the end, cash flows to friends and he keeps their "promise". and we can be irate with the provincial goats for registries, or he can "blame" them...Aka we won't bring any in, but if Que and Ontario do it on their own (wink wink)...well thats their prerogative.

No matter what side you pick in the religious or political debate, it is just your opinion, a friend will not try to convince you your opinion is wrong, just different from theirs. If I am trying to hit a 56 degree gap wedge into a tight pin, I do not want my golf partner to bring up the idea that god might have something to do with the outcome.

You know from my Facebook feed, nothing is taboo with me. Lots of them are teachers, Leo/opp, fire fighters, (Politics came up a lot in hunt camp as did the Unions and they are all LEO/FF) and just regular peons who earn around the means...

Sometimes, certainly not always there is a right or wrong.
For example. Would be hard to the Liberals aren't corrupt (Gas plants, Sudbury, Unions). Or the cost to peons (exploding Hydro, taxation)?

Gun control. No way to really answer ( I think) if theres a right/wrong. But lets play the "what if game" and say they bring in some. Maybe simply for what if, theoretical purposes......they make semi's a restricted.

The fact that you see clearly the direction this matter might go. It's important that firearm owns need to stand united in support of our numbers across this great land, even those of our number who live in Quebec, who I'm sure are not in favour of this move by their governs. The feds feeding the monster will only give it legs, and allow it to devour us piece-meal province by province. I remember the last time, I couldn't understand where it kept coming from, and yet always there was ever money to piss away on the LGR. I suspected it was the GST, which they were using. I'm wondering if they're likely to once again raise it to 7%, and blame the former government for leaving the books in a financial mess, or cry poor because of sinking oil revenues. It's already been established that the increase tax on the rich, will fall short of covering the proposed tax break intended for the middle class. Less you forget they, also.promised a carbon tax, to deal with climate change and other environmental concerns, I wonder how they are going to measure and monitor, that stuff, so they won't be hitting us up for more taxation than is really necessary. The economy is going to go into the toilet, infrastructure programs will see to that, a long with an increase in our national debit.
