Looking for a tent of fairly decent quality. Want to get more than one year's use. Not to worried bout weight cause either 4 wheeler or boat will be hauling. Only for me, wife, and pooch so I better say 4-5 man cause I think when they rate em the invision the people sleeping upright. Any thought on a decently rugged, fairly easy to set up make/model?
PS. Due to pooch I'd think floorless or removeable floor maybe an asset

You know what? Any tent will do decently these days.
I was - in my younger, no family, money flowing days - a stickler for only the best camping gear but since camping with kids we've had to sacrifice brand for budget a lot.
Example: in 2013 we needed a new family sized tent 6-7 person. We couldn't afford a Eureka or Wagner version and ended up getting a Walmart Broadstone 3 season on clearance. Regularly $325, for $76.
Best camping purchase in ages. We've camped in it 7 times now - shortest trip has been 3 days - and not a jammed zipper, leaking seam, or any other issue. And it's seen a LOT of abuse. Drunken campers, clutzy kids falling thru the doors, tripping over guy lines, etc.
Last year it even went through a 2 hr hail storm and then a 1 hr deluge that flooded our site with 4" of water.
Not a single leak.
Mainly, as long as you maintain it and never pack it away damp, most tents will last you a solid 5 yrs.
Anyone know about these? I like the way it can be heated or not and no prospector pole system but just what the he11 keeps it up?

What's the intended use? Are you hiking in, car camping, canoeing, sledding? Do you plan on using it in the winter? I've always had good use out of MEC Tarn tents when I was a young lad. These days, I use a Mountain Hardwear Lightwedge for fair weather usage and a Mountain Hardwear Trango for winter usage. I had the Lightwedge for about 8 trouble-free years so far. If you plan on going on an expedition or setting up a semi-permanent camp, then you could look at canvas tents. In the end, it depends on how you plan on using your shelter.
In general, the MEC house brand equipment and clothing is a real safe bet for a combination of excellent quality gear at a fair price (relative to high end brand names).
I'll be trying for canvas from a durability point of view and the slight possibility I might go on a hunt and bring my little wood stove canvas would be better. Looking at this fellaQuote:

any cheap tent will do fine in great weather...
so depending when you use it, a cheap one might last you a couple of years or break the first night.
MEC tents are okay, but I those I tried had poor ventilation. You don't want a mountaineering tent for Eastern Canada.
I really like Hilleberg - took me years until I bit the bullet and got one. Worth every single penny - wonder why I waited so long!
If you think of using a stove, get canvas (best climate) - not great without stove however.

We always pack a tarp in with us. If we are going in for a few days, tarp and rope fits nicely into your pack or bags. sting it up as a lean to or as a tent. works very well. If it doesn't make it the season, they are only $10-$20 so no big expense. Wife will cuddle you all night long especially if there are critters around.
That looks like it would be very hot in the summer. Ventilation looks poor. Also consider that it doesnt look very bug proof, so prepare to deal with mosquitos.Quote:

If your looking for a tent to use as hunting or fishing camp for prolonged stays, I would recommend a deluxe wall tent, have been using for 4 yrs during Alberta whitetail hunt, you can purchase internal frame or use poles, we have the frame sets up easily in 15 minutes. we hunted in -20 weather and it kept us very warm after the days hunt and through the night.
So got my tent with stove hole. Looking for heat source. Hate wood. Hassle, dirty, smelly, won't go all night etc etc. I know folk say propane will kill. Well if it's going up a pipe the same way wood smoke would or it would kill too, it's got to be possible. I'd appreciate thoughts on a buy or a build. The milsurp multi fuels are OK. Their main source is diesel or kerosene. Again you're not going to have yourself and cloths in proximity to that and hunt the next day. I've settled on propane just got to figure out how

Agree with this. I'd vent top and bottom just to be sure.
One other thing: to cut down on the amount of propane you're going to burn at night add a fly over the tent to reduce heat loss. Makes a huge difference.
