Canadian traditions tv show

four episodes into the season I have watched Taylor hook up a truck to a trailer, get his gear ready, wash his boat, set up a tent, cook some fish and talk about his love for the outdoors . . . oh and catch a few LMB . . . and I watched him glass for caribou . . . but he missed the migration so we got to watch him fish some more . . . At least he finally shot something last week.

I used to really like this show but its gone to !! He's an amateur hunter at best and has accomplished nothing in the fishing world . . . I just don't get it oh wait - Berkley sponsors the show now . . .

The Canadian traditions advertisement show . . .

I watch it when I can, and I agree that it seems to have shifted its focus a bit lately. From my recollection, it used to be focused mostly on hunting, and lately it seems to be more about fishing. It seems that this was a conscious decision, perhaps to broaden the appeal and survive in an industry that has a few shows that are all very similar?

All of those shows are one big advert. Ever fished with those guys before? cause they aren't using those beautiful truck/trailer/boat combos when they're off the camera. i know many of the majors, fishing and hunting tv is perhaps the worst resource there is for outdoorsman. if you don't pay them enough, they won't go to your camp, so when they do OFCOURSE they are going to praise it, they're being paid. same goes with every piece of gear they use, it's all paid advertising, you can't trust a word you hear on any of those shows.
all gear, and locations are paid adverts.
basically outdoor television is currently a home shopping network. not a tool for outdoorsmen to learn on.
fish or hunt with any of these guys off the air and you'll never see what you saw on the show, they might as well be selling you a shamwow, it's all for show.
built for kids really, which is fine, it's fun to see the beautiful places.

Like the shift in focus from high five knee slapping yahoos cheering on a big kill shot. Nice too see someone appreciating the experience and not focusing on the kill....even if its paid programming

You forgot that he also he cuts some wood and wacks some weeds with his shiny new Stihl power equipment.

Somebodies got to pay for it . Just cause they advertise doesnt mean i have to buy . Even the Beasly Bros . Are what i call "Promotional " hunters . I enjoy most & the scenery but im old & crippled up & dont get out much anymore . Haha Luck

i'm not saying it isn't a necessary evil, i'm just saying "buyer beware" what you're watching is a commercial, and nothing you see on the shows should be taken by any serious outdoorsman as a true and genuine product endorsement. it needs to be understood as a paid endorsement. Techniques, are the only bit of the shows to perhaps pay any attention to, not products or locations.

Last time I saw Canadian Traditions, it seemed to go from 1 advertisement to the next and not much show in between. I'll pass thanks. B525

With all due respect I would suggest that if you think you can do better, by all means go out there and produce a better show! It is a hell of a lot of work dealing and getting sponsors, channels to carry your show, endorsements and still produce on every hunt. How many times do we go out and see nothing when deer hunting or have a bad day shooting ducks. I have hunted caribou and when your time it right it is fantastic- miss by a week and you really have to apply some effort. With regards to calling someone an arm chair hunter that statement reeks of envy. If you plan to denigrate someone might I suggest backing it up with a number of examples. I've guided for turkeys in the past- many things can effect success- same as when I've taken people out for musky. I would say that I am fairly knowledgeable in those pursuits, but there are days when I still chalk up a zero. I've written articles for magazines and I will endorse a certain lure and they will leave that out of the article because that magazine doesn't have endorsements with that manufacturer. It's the price of doing business in an industry that has become to commercialized and where people are often far too critical of their brethren.

Watched Trappers Inc last night . Great show , he spent part of it showing how to dig hole & build an outhouse . No promo there lol got better tho as went on back into trapping & demonstrations . Luck

Good post! If there are no sponsors, there is no show ! This is one of the best shows on TV...IMHO !!

I stopped watching that show along with the others such as Angler & Hunter and the Bearsly Brothers three years ago. So boring to watch and create my own adventures.

You never see me complaining about hunting shows, because I don't watch 'em. ;)

It's easier to watch things like this without thinking about how the sausage is made. These guys pay to play and the sponsors get them on the air. It's not really a good production model, but the fact is, they make the show that the market will bear.

I was lucky enough to have won a chance to fish with Mike Miller 2 years ago and he is exactly the same in real life as on the show. I asked alot of questions about making a show and was stunned at how much cost and work is involved. Just because he goes somewhere does not mean he gets any footage for a show. Still must pay camera men to come along and rest of the crew. Without sponsors definetly be no show. He be the first to tell you how nice it would be to have a full half hour of just hunting, but not reality.

Wait till March roles around and the 'Pick and Play' system kicks in....only the strongest will survive....most of these shows will disappear due to lack of interest.

Hopefully the will use their channel on YouTube and stream their shows there..they may even do better there.

Same old "debate".
People don't realize what goes into making a show. How much camera's cost, that someone (their camera guy) has to lug 20,30, 40 pounds of equipment into marshes, across fields, up mountains. Then likely that same guy spends ungodly hours once home editing, putting it together. He does it all for free of coarse. That sometimes its pouring rain, or the game just don't show up on demand. and on and on.

Had the pleasure of spending a week in a camp with CiTR.

I just wish Canadian Traditions and CITR would hurry the hell up with new shows. All I've seen in the last few months are old ones from 5 or 7 years ago..

I like Canadian Traditions & the Beasly Brothers. The guy on Canadian Traditions seems to be a regular Joe. The kind of guy I would like to hunt and hang out with.
I also like the pretty blonde girl show. Because she's a pretty blonde girl that likes to hunt.

As far as the advertizing goes - be thankfull they are advertizing fishing/hunting products and not dish soap or hair remover.

You guys want a show devoid of blatant product placement that's on regular tv channels try watching MEATEATER.
im still surprised how much I hear complain people about advertisements and the no one has seen MEATEATER.
Granted it's not Canadian, but he hunts in BC the odd time. I think it's on OLN and some other channels but it's just on PVR every Monday and eventually there's new episodes on their.

The host is an author, somewhat of an intellectual and a very talented cook, who spends a lot of time on the show cooking his kill, sometimes over campfire and sometimes in his kitchen. There is very little product placement and no "gear corner" type segment where he spouts off about his sponsors products. He mostly hunts big game in the mountains, but also hits up small game hunts. His YouTube channel and books are great for info and recipes.
Another show I've become addicted to on YouTube is solo hunter. Great show very little advertising.


i don't mind canadian tradition and canada in the rough, but find it aggravating how much advertising they do on the show, I understand advertisements are required, but it doesn't have to be the whole show and they could be mire creative and subtle about it. And i find the Beasley brothers to be pretty corny, and if you pay attention they say the same thing over and over again throughout each show.

Youtube has all the best shows. What to learn: about about debris huts, fire making, tracking game, zombie rounds, hunt skills shooting different rds and results, solar power, off grid, rocket stoves, how dig a ram well, how to hook an inverter to solar pack, water turbines, duck blind set ups, calling ducks, calling turkey, calling deer. I very rarely watch "Regular TV", even reality shows are not real anymore. I get it, they have to make a living. But if I want real people trying new things and making mistakes, youtube. For advice from fellow hunters, I come here and have learned so much this forum.

When Shaw cancelled the airing of all the hunting shows 2 years ago I figured all we would get is the US shows on WildTV. No one likes all the product placement but at least they are still on the air. I may be wrong but pretty sure they actually pay for the air time they use.

That's a great example of a show that succeeds on a traditional model, i.e. without having to pay to play. Why? Because it actually has a unique hook for viewers. Some actual content.

The main reason hunting shows (and fishing shows) are stuck in pay to play world is that the people making them are simply doing the same thing as everyone else.

The armchair part was a typo - it meant to say amateur.

However, the post does wreak of envy because I am envious - I'd love to be outfitted with all that gear and equipment and travel the country doing what Taylor does . . . . the reality is I'm not about to quit my job to produce a hunting show and my opinion of the show wont change.
Criticism is part of life - I'm pretty sure every person who works for a living deals with some form of criticism every day . . . so is Taylor and his advertisement show.

I record these hunting shows and skip the intro, commercials and credits. Sometimes I watch the gear segments, depending on what they are about. I am able to watch the three shows I record weekly in less than an hour instead of 1.5 hours if I were to watch them "live".

Well said Stilchen and Doug I totally agree.
As all sportsmen and sportsladies know whether you hunt or fish there is no guarantee when we go out that we will be successful.
As for the show Taylor is just an ordinary guy who started out hunting with Thomas Pigeon on Canada in the Rough who likes to hunt and fish and had the opportunity to start his own show and let me tell you that it's not as easy as one thinks and goes to show you that even an ordinary guy can start his own show if he puts his heart into.
Advertising on any TV show is a necessary evil if you want to pay the bills and stay on to collect a paycheque.
I don't like all the hunting shows on TV but I do appreciate them, just my 2 cents.

From an adults perspective, we can tune out the sales pitches...I worry more about the younger minds we sit down with to watch theses shows and their impressionable little minds are sucking it all up like sponges. They shouldn't be watching the guys they idolize flogging products week after week. It sinks into their subconscious minds.

No wonder when they grow up all they want to drive is a Ram and don't know why :)

I've got the ad-blockers for Chrome installed and set up......it doesn't seem to catch the embedded ads within the Youtube player. But thanks for the heads up if they are suppose to work, then I'll take a look the next time.

You know, I never believed that this type of advertising works. I don't feel that it affects me. But my 8 year old son recently got the fishing bug and started watching some fishing shows. I don't know much about fishing, but he got some gift certificates for his birthday and wanted to go buy some fishing gear, so I took him to Sail to get the basics. When we got there, he went searching for Rapala lures. I had heard the name, but I didn't see a real difference between a lure from one brand or another, so I asked him why he wanted that specific brand. He said it's because that's the brand they use on the shows!

If you want to watch a good show by a guy that only hunts public land without guides watch Randy Newbergs shows

I can tolerate fishing/hunting ads on a fishing/hunting show but I go brain dead when an ad for soap or some upcoming movie is shown on these same shows.

I really do think these shows benefit the growth of our sport. I remember watching them long before I ever started hunting myself and became more and more interested with every episode. And yes, before I knew anything about anything, I did have an idea about what brands were "best" as a result of the advertising. The adds do work, just not for those of us who now know better.

Steve Rinella of "Meateater" fame is the only show I watch anymore, great hunter, amazing show, 100% fair chase. Still keep WILD TV but only for the pure gun and gear shows, stopped watching their hunting shows years ago when the high-fence and high-fives just got too much.

i found that Citr got to infomercial for me and i quit watching, i pretty much turned that stuff off for a 1 1/2 year. back watching again, as for Canadian trad. i loved it before and felt the last episode i watched with the caribou hunt was neat.... that he never got to see or shoot any one, been on a few moose hunts like that !!!they help promote the outdoors and fishing and hunting so have at it

I have wild tv but truthfully rarely watch it. It's not the commercials and the endorsements that bother me though. Without that money those shows wouldn't exist. User pay without corporate endorsement would be the end of that business. What I can't handle is trophy mentality and how they usually hunt in near preserve like conditions. Pretty far from reality for most and if a newby starts out expecting to be able to pass on bucks because they aren't book class then I think our sport is in trouble. I understand that the viewers want to see big bucks and you have to cater to your market but I would be just as happy to see them kill does and forkhorns. If you were to hit a bunch of deer camps in this Province you would see game poles with trophy bucks, dinkers and fawns hanging. And every hunter likely proud of what they shot.

The biggest problem is how do we digest everything- If you're 48 like me, you will view things very differently than someone in their early 20's and just starting out. Hunting is more of a science than thirty years ago- scent control-motorized decoys etc some of the sport is better and some is not. When I first started out any deer was great-as I got older I tried to harvest mature bucks or does and learned about herd balance and deer management philosophies. I have more joy now if I take a couple of nice mallards and my dog works well rather than going out and taking my limit ducks. We progress and mature with time and knowledge. I take my son fishing and hunting- I teach him about seasons and that we are part of the environment and to respect it and to never take too much. That when he harvests a deer, to be thankful to respect the animal and to celebrate. Just none of that fist pumping yahooing and yelling Terms like "Die baby Die" cause if he does he'll be sorry. Be humble in your success and never forget that the memories are the most important thing. Back in the 70's and 80's every musky caught got bonked, today if you keep one fish for the wall and release every other musky you catch in your life there will still be some tool screaming that it must be 100% catch and release even though some lakes have more musky than they can handle, and you end up with stunted fish because the forage base can't support the number of predators. Why? because that is all these young angler and hunters see on tv so they believe it's gospel. It's our job as fathers, uncles and brothers to teach them what it's all about. Sometimes a trip to the library, where there are a plethora of classic hunting and fishing literature from excellent writers from years back that is available can make a great deal of difference as well.
