Spot and stalk black bears in Ontario

Well guys, I have been fortunate enough to hunt out west a couple times now and have really fallen in love with spot and stalk hunting.
Now with the opening of the spring bear hunt the gears have started turning and I'm starting to think about a spot and stalk style hunt here in our home province.
I'm just looking for some leads on regions where I could have a chance on spotting a bear in some open spaces.
Ashamedly I haven't spent much time in our north country, which is where I'm assuming I will need to go to find some clear cuts, etc. But if someone is kind enough to give me a starting point so I can get into the maps it would be much appreciated!

The Chapleau region has more clear cuts than you could scout in a season and would be worth a look although a bit far if you will be a weekend warrior but if you got a week or more it would be perfect. Mostly all crown land so camping would be easy and great fishing to boot.

I've hunt hydro lines with some success in the past. Especially if you have a nice 1+ mile stretch.

No worries pal , google earth is your friend. Bout 20 _ 30 minutes south of chapleau there are hundres of km of logging roads. One main one is close to Sultan running south off the Sultan hwy called Robinson rd. Another a little farther south , maybe 10 mmis south of 5 mile lake lodge is Whitehead rd. Whitehead goes on forever and there is a good mix of old and new cuts.
Both roads are good for 2wd pickup trucks and even cars but if you venture off onto other logging roads there is no guarantee , mind you most are pretty good.

Now that sounds like fun....If you need someone to tag along.... let me know as this definitely sounds like a hunt to remember....

I'll be spotting and stalking them in 28. I have always enjoyed spot and stalk. Will bait as well. You'll want to concentrate on areas that green up fast. Feeding heavy on fresh grass shoots and dandillions. You don't need huge areas that are open. Specially if theres a lot of traffic in the area. Out west helps because its more open however theres tons of bears here just can't see them from as far. Also can do it in farmers fields with permission of course.

Gowganda and Shinning Tree might give you some luck. Lots of nice cuts up there.

I haven't hunted bear up there but friends have. In my adventures up there I have come across some decent bears in the cuts up there.

Are you asking about area's for the spring hunt or next Fall's ?

The Pembroke area is a great place to see Bear wandering close to Hwy 17. Not sure how accessible the area is to hunt, I was hoping some the Valley Guys up that way would chime in. Also see bears along hwy 58 heading west to Round Lake (WMU 55B 58).

But again I haven't hunted it myself but maybe guys up that way could help you out.

To the OP, any luck with the spring spot and stalk?

If you're thinking of doing a fall hunt there are major blueberry areas around Matheson that would suit your purpose well for a spot and stalk. I know some guys that go up there picking every year and they see lots of bears.

I have tried power line right of ways around Stonecliff and have worked a couple bears there in spring when the grass starts coming up. Never got close enough for my longbow but easy pickings for a rifle.

These resurrected old threads are always so depressing. So many members that have left. But ya, don't expect Skull to see this after being logged off for 3 years. He's still running a baits and taking clients for spring and fall hunts. Not sure about spot and stalk tho
