Fishing - Killarney Provincial Park - La Cloche Silhouette Trail

Hey all,

I've done a bunch of googling on the fishing in the park which doesn't seem to be the greatest due to dead lakes (acid rain).

Me and two buddies will be back this summer to do the loop in 4 days.
We will be staying at Boundary Lake on night 1. Lake of Three Narrows on night 2 and Cave lake on night 3.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience fishing these lakes.
We'll be hiking and therefore all fishing will be done from shore.
If anyone has anything to share about fish in these lakes or tips, lures etc... I am all ears.

So far it seems like Three Narrows would be my best bet to catch something.
I also found a page that said Cave lake would be good too but it's relatively small and the site gave no indication as to what fish to expect, I do remember some small blue gill or pumpkin seed swimming around my pump when we filled with water here last year.

You're right most of the lakes in the Park suffered acidification back in the 70's. Three Narrows has smallmouth bass and pike I believe. Not sure about the other two lakes. Try the MNR site "fish on-line" for Ontario. It might offer more info.

From what I understand, most of the lakes are fish sanctuaries up there. They are recovering from the acid rain. The MNR reintroduced lake trout in a few lakes, as they can tolerate higher PH levels. Check the regs, as quite a few lakes are catch and release, barbless if you are fishing. There are quite a few lakes listed under the exceptions for regs.

Ya was looking at that. Fortunately two of the lakes I'm staying on (three narrows and cave) aren't very restrictive. Boundary I can't find any info on... due to the time we have to complete the loop I won't have many opportunities to make casts on some of the other lakes we'll be travelling by.
All fishing on this trip will be C&R anyways.

Ive had luck fishing in Three Narrows in the heat of July on a canoe trip, had some bass action right at the launch after climbing up the pig and then had 5 or 6 pike while dragging Rapalas behind the canoe along shorelines.

If you're planning on completing the full trail in 4 days you likely won't have too much time to fish! Regardless I would recommend starting with Jeff's Maps (www.jeffsmaps.com). He lists fish species there and its accurate.

I'll be up there fishing this week on the evenings of the 22nd, 23rd (camping in H5) and maybe the 24th (H6).

Hey lurker not yet. Going 29th to 1st our night on cave lake will be the 31st also on H6... I've also decided not to take the fishing equipment with me this time because we are doing an accelerated time frame (going counter clockwise h35 night one. H21 night two and h6 night three.).

That's going to be an challenging trek, hope you enjoy. I'll post any pics or details of anything I catch. For bait, I'll be using little spoons, spinners and rubber worms.

Dependant on your success I may end up taking some equipment.
I know when I was there on cave lake last year there were lots of blue gill that were very inquisitive about my water filter line in the water...

Just got back home last night. I stayed at the H5 campsite, where there's a marsh with noisy toads and lots of weeds to the left.

Caught a few, very small Bluegills (7cm to 10cm in length) and then switched to a Red Devil lure and caught a baby Largemouth Bass (10cm), and that was it. There's a bit of seaweed growth in the lake because I kept pulling the stuff in with longer casts. The Bluegills swim right up to your toes if you step in the water, which is very clear and cool. Bring lots of AfterBite with you.

Skitters were bad? We went same time last year with very little issues.

From what I heard, this year's hotter. So the Skeeters and Horseflies, especially, are very aggressive. I had lots of welts all over me. No blackflies, though, but in the town of Killarney, the no-see-ums are there and man, can they bite. I plan to go back in the fall time after all the bugs are dead and hike further in, maybe challenge "The Pig Portage".

Got back this afternoon from our hike.

Our first day was a long day. Boundary Lake H35 was very nice and seemed to have a number of fish feeding at dusk on water bugs (not sure what the fish were but there were a number of decent sized splashes). Bugs weren't much of an issue here.

Second night at H21 on Lake of Three Narrows was also nice but there were red ants and LOTS of deer flies down at the water who swarmed us as soon as we got out of the water from our swim; not our experience from last year.

Third night on Cave lake H6 was great. A few mosquitoes but definitely didn't experience the deer flies like you did... the blue gill were there again to greet us at the water and would nip at your toes if you dangled your feet in the water.

Wish I had taken some fishing gear to make a few casts but also glad I didn't to save on weight. About 7km from H6 on our 3rd day (which was supposed to be our easiest day) my knee started to give me alot of trouble so I had to pop some Tylenol and wrap it tight with a tensor, made it there but it really slowed our pace.

For anyone reading this and thinking of hiking the LA Cloche Silhouette trail I'd definitely recommend it. Stunning views and if you want to make it one, it can be a great challenge. Saw some deer, grouse and a fox. No moose or bear.

Unfortunately there are some people who use the trails who aren't familiar with Leave No Trace (LNT) practices and there was some garbage at some of the campsites we were at. Especially H6 where we found a can of sun screen and about 5 or 6 cans of some kind of Brunswick canned fish in the fire pit.

Welcome back. Sounds like you had a good trek despite your knee problem. I'm something of a bug magnet, especially the skeeters, but I'm already planning a fall trip after the bugs are gone. I have to try hiking up that "Pig Portage" as they call it and go a little beyond and then back. I won't be able to do the full loop (I like to take my time, stop for pictures, etc.) so I'm limited to about four or five days.
