Titled “Strengthening Canadians’ Security and Promotion Hunting and Recreational Shooting” seeks to create a definition for “hunting firearms”, amend the definition of “prohibited firearms” and to replace “restricted firearms” with “circumscribed firearms”, defined as all previous restricted firearms and all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns so that they can only be used at an approved range:

Definition 1

A hunting firearm is defined as any firearm with a smoothbore or striated barrel that is more than 470 mm long, in other words a shotgun or rifle. Semi-automatic weapons are not included in the definition of hunting firearm, with the exception of 22 calibre rim-fire semi-automatic rifles.

Definition 2

A circumscribed firearm is any firearm, other than a prohibited firearm, that has a barrel equal to or less than 470 millimetres, such as handguns or firearms that are capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner.

just my luck. I avoid buying a semi for years, finally get one and if this passes I wont be able to sell it or use it....

lets hope it doesn't get anywhere. when I took my gun course about 9 years ago, the instructor warned us this might happen, but I figured they were just trying to fill the seats in the restricted course...

I have sold my BAR for this reason. I still own a semi .22 which I inherited from my father and a semi shotgun I use for ducks and turkey. Im going to hang on to them as long as I can but yes the Senate will soon be liberal controlled. This would lead to more backlash than this uninformed imbecile knows though as clearly she knows nothing about hunting firearms and trades on baseless rhetoric but then again governments rise and fall on not much more.
If this idiot had researched this properly she would have found that thousands of people who voted liberal are hunters and that semis are very common.

Remember the pushback on retaining the gun registry in Quebec from Liberal MNA's who got an earful from their constituents. I suspect an even bigger national pushback would happen for this proposal. She is lumping hunting semi's together with 'black' tactical semi's.

I doubt (but have been wrong) it will pass now but they have and will keep coming up with this. The Resolution has come up from various groups in the party in the past. If you watch the video posted awhile ago showing the meeting where they talked about it the problem seemed to be it would cost them votes more than anything. Australia cut up all the pumps too and a lever action was used in the parliament attack so no telling how far SOME would like to go. I honestly think its just a matter of time ( one more majority mandate actually ) before the liberals attack legal gun owners. We are spread out too thin and are too small a group to fight at the polls. Politically we are outgunned.

Well you guys can always do what they did in Connecticut - they recently passed some kind of gun registration bill but 90% of gun owners are ignoring the law - it's pretty tough to arrest thousands of people

I know one thing for sure if there was ever a registration requirement passed down here I and millions of people would not register our guns because once they know who has them then they can come for them - people have to stand up against their government in times like this

Any bill that is introduced and passed in the Senate is kicked down to the House of Commons for approval. There is no way this bill will be passed. Even with a liberal majority. There are way too many MP's outside the cities with gun owning constituents.

Off an NFA post... it wasn't the NFA itself that posted it but from my quick read it seems pretty close to right and the person posting it made the statements based on their interpretation.

The main features of Bill S-223 are as follows:
1. Current firearms categories are replaced with:
a. Hunting firearms;
b. Circumscribed firearms; and
c. Prohibited firearms.
2. Unlike now, “prohibited firearm” is the new “default category”. If a particular firearm is not included in one of the other two categories, it is “prohibited” by default.
3. To qualify as a “hunting firearm”, government approval will be required by way of Order in Council for any specific model.
4. “Circumscribed firearms” include current “restricted firearms”, as well as all center-fire semi-automatic shotguns and rifles, other than .22 rimfire rifles.
5. As a result of re-classification to “circumscribed firearms”, all semi-automatic shotguns and rifles will become illegal for hunting purposes.
6. Except for collection purposes, possession of “circumscribed firearms” will only be allowed at shooting clubs and registered storage facilities. The owner of such a firearm will not even be allowed to transport it himself, or keep it at home.
7. This bill is meant to come into effect one year after its royal sanction. In essence, firearms owners will have one year to register their semi-auto rifles and shotguns, and find a suitable storage facility (few of which currently exist) to store them, along with their handguns and other restricted/prohibited firearms.

The first job of all politicians after they've been elected is to get re-elected. Alienating an entire voting bloc right out of the gate is the best way to guarantee that won't happen because it gives the opposition a lot more time to mount an attack that can easily sway "fence-sitters." Waiting until the end of their first term,then,floating a couple of "trial balloons" (like I think this is) to gauge the depth of opposition is a far better strategy. If it appears the opposition has been vigilant and it could cost the Liberals another re-election,they won't touch it with a ten foot pole. This is just my opinion,but,when it becomes obvious to the Liberal Party that they're about to be turfed,that's when they'll go at the "gun lobby" with everything they've got as a "legacy" piece.

Not sure which is more likely, attack up front and over the next 3 years bribe, propagandize and distort to secure that magic 39% for the next election or a legacy piece they can also use as a hail marry pass to draw the ignorant and fearful to their side on the election.... it will be interesting & painful to see.
