Arthritis and dogs
Has anyone dealt with arthritis in dogs. Our boy's front paws swell up so bad that he can't walk. Have him on low dose asprin and glucosimine. He is only 5 and very active ( gascon bluetick hound ). Can not take him for a walk as he refuses to come home, he wants his usual walk or he just sits down and won't move. When he weighs 100 lbs it's not like you can pick him up and carry him home.

Has a vet confirmed it is arthritis...did they suggest MetaCam, it's an anti-inflammatory.

Deramaxx is another anti-inflammatory that is not as hard on a dog's system as Meta-cam. If the vet confirms that this is an arthritic issue, the Deramaxx can be used at a 1/2 dose for maintenance. Not cheap but it is helping the old boy (13 years) around here.

My 10 year old setter has bad arthritis in one leg ; I use metacam and tramadol. Both help a lot, but I don't let her run more than an hour , even though she'd like to.

Is it arthritis? and if it is and it is in the bone joints, we had great success using Cartrophen Vet, injections for one of our Labs. [not cheap ] but did wonders for our dog, you would swear that she wasn't arthritic at all after an injection which would last for a few months.

I used Meta Cam for years on my old German Shepherd. She got 3 more good years out of her and even at the end at 14 years 11 months that wasn't what ended her life. She was good to the end with arthritis as long as she had her daily dose. She went from being unable to stand at times to running and jumping on the bed again. You have to follow the dosage because too much can cause internal bleeding. I think anything that makes the dog happy and extends their life and improves quality of life. Hope you find something for your friend.

In older dogs, I have seen Glucosamine work wonders to get them back on the feet. Seen a Westie go from being grounded to getting back on the couch after only 3 months of taking it as part of her diet. It's works wonders for for dogs.
Orthopedic surgeons at the Alta-Vista animal hospital (Ottawa) highly recommend it for all their patients, especially if they have had surgery on a joint.
But in a younger dog there may be other issues to cause that kind of swelling.

I'll second the glucosamine treatment. Mind you that's based on treating a single dog with it, but it worked.

Glucosamine is good, but as well what really has worked for me is turmeric. The turmeric reduces the inflammation.

Thanks for all the input, I now have somethings to check out.We are using the glucosamine but need to bump up to other products, would prefer to try holistic first over prescribed medications. We already lost a great dog to over prescribed vacinations won't do that again.

Found something that works for a short time, it at least gets him up and moving. Voltarin, put some on and then put on a sock the hardest thing is keeping the sock on.

I want to send thanks to Longgun, the tumeric is working put 1 tsp in his food now for the last three days now only 1/2 tsp per day , he is up and walking with a slight limp but no whining. If it keeps up by next week will try taking him for walks again.Much thanks for a happier dog and hunting partner

I'm glad it worked. I know it worked for me at a time when walking was extremely painful. It is supposed to be a cancer fighter as well.

Glad that worked for you. Consider a long term joint supplement too. I use Nutramax Dasuquin.
