My Summer Camping and Fall hunting might be affected

So some of my Summer Camping and Fall hunting might be affected.

I'm about to this week have my ulnar nerve operated on (Cubital Tunnel syndrome). actually this Friday (April 22). July long weekend we have a camp planned and Aug long weekend a big camping trip.

I'm wondering who on here has had this done before and how long before you could use your arm?

I'm hoping to still go camping May long weekend my best friend will be doing all the work, I'm just going to be be well doing nothing I guess.

In the past I have healed in half the time when I have had accidents hoping my body will do me one more favor this time around.

Holy Crap GW...I had never heard of this issue before..so I linked it....darn if I haven't got the same thing !!! Can't hold a phone for a long time with out my arm/hand falling asleep and getting all tingly.

How severe can it get ? So far mine only happens when using the phone and if I sleep on it funny.

You'll have to keep me abreast of the surgery and recover plan. I've never heard of anyone having this specific operation.

The thing is, mine is on the same arm I had elbow surgery on so it might be related to that. I broke it playing hockey years ago and then had to have a 2nd operation to remove further bone chips from inside the joint. The first was done with arthroscopic surgery was a breeze, sling and a few weeks of tender movement. The 2nd was a little more invasive and they had to open up the joint to find the bone fragments. Recover wasn't that long either and was only in a sling for a few weeks.

So if you're having similar surgeries it shouldn't be too bad and by summer you should be good to go. Just make sure you do the physio while recovering so you get you movement back properly.

My wife has been battling this for 15 yrs, every couple of yrs she gets cortisone injections in wrists and it works. I would hope you have explored this option with your doctor. For some it works for other it does not. Her symptoms are sore wrists, typing affected and hands that go numb overnight. Please review the pro/cons of surgery before going forward and try cortisone injection before if you have not yet!!!

That sounds more like carpel tunnel (wrist)...his is in the elbow (Cubital Tunnel). But your right, I wonder if the cortisone shot would work for it too.

So back in Dec actually Christmas morning I woke with my hand numb and pins and needles in my pinky, half my forth finger and a portion of my palm were numb and pins and needles. Didn't think much of it, but it never went away. Few weeks later I figured maybe I should see my GP and she sent me to the Hospital to have a test on my hand, you know they send electrical pulses through it. So comes back that I have my Ulnar nerve is damaged. So I am sent to see a Surgeon who says the best time to fix it is before it gets worse. I told him I really don't have any pain in my hand but he said my muscle is slowly wasting a way and overtime it would become cramped over, now is the best time to stop it.

Kinda of a stop gap measure. I guess I decided to try and fix it all together. Not sure if I made the right decision, but to late now.

I lose feeling in my ring and pinky fingers too, no idea why and never thought it was anything other than banging it.

Definitively the right decision...if it was tested and found to be damaged...yes get it fixed.

I have a buddy with Parkinson Disease and it has directly affected his Ulnar nerve. I noticed it, about 3 yrs ago, when he was having trouble pull starting his chainsaw. His hand is now curled up and basically useless because that nerve being affected. So YES get it fixed and be happy knowing your doing the right thing.

So my hand has been numb and pins and needles for 3 months now.

Good luck with this. Make sure that you do whatever physiotherapy they recommend and stick to it. Also, don't try to do too much too soon. It's better to wait a little and have everything working for the future.

Here's hoping to a speedy recovery greatwhite. Maybe you'll miss a few days afield his season but hopefully having the surgery done will extend your future seasons.

Oh I still plan (hope) to go camping in May, won't be able to do anything with my arm but hopefully I will be out. Has to be healed by no later then July.

I got a hook deeply lodged in my elbow on a fishing trip (my buddy drove a large treble into the cavity in my elbow while casting a large plus) and I needed to have a minor surgery to take it out. Just rubbing on the nerve caused numbness and discomfort. It wasn't the surgery you're having done, but it didn't take too long to recover.

Hope all goes well with the operation. I had all the nerves shorten in my left hand,then had sympathetic dystrophy. A team .of doctors and recovered 5.5 years later. Get well soon.

WTF, you had to stop hunting for 5 years??? Were you able to drive or anything else?

.Never stopped hunting,( hunted more ) I couldn't use my bow ,but bought a cross bow and gun hunted.
I was only suppose to be off for 6 weeks or so but it's rare and my body rejected the operation and the swelling caused the calcium to leach out of the bones and deposit in all the joints causing me to have a claw.

well operation is over. Been home since Friday night, no pain yet seems good, arm is all bandaged up. Been up an around. Still waking up at 4:30 pm cause that's what time i usually go to the barn. Went and got a coffee myself. Tried yesterday to see if i could figure out a way to hold fishing rod with one hand but couldn't. Going back to regular IT job on Thursday maybe Wed will see.

Went for a drive this morning when I got my coffee and saw lot's of snow geese, sure wish I had a short barrel shot gun that I could hold with one hand, I can hear people shooting right now.

Hoping everything heals fast.

your getting the same thing done? Just remember you arm will be out of commission for probably a month or 2 and complete healing may take 6-8 months.

I have to get it done but I'll wait as long as I can
I am a right hand, I have to get my right hand done and I only bow hunt
My specialist seid over a year for sure

Nope not me was out camping all weekend and never once tried to use the chainsaw. I wonder who it was.

So hows the recovery going ?

Not sure no pain unless I bump my elbow. But my fingers are still numb. Full up Dr appt in late June.

From what I read the numbness can take months to go away. I can live with that as long as the problem is fixed and the muscle is no longer wasting away. I'm right handed so I can still do a lot of things. I was shooting the 22 over the weekend so I can lift that.

Pretty much you can't tell that I had an operation but I can't lift much with my left yet and I'm not suppose to still.
