Hip and elbow clearances

Hello

I have two year old golden. He has achieved some titles and he turning out to be a great dog.

I think it would be awesome to stud him out to get a puppy in future after he achieves some more titles.

My question to all the breeders is concerning hip and elbow clearances. Is it better to do it sooner then later? Do I have to do it every year? Secondly should I go further and do eye and heart? And what are the prices?

By all means- I do not want to become a professional breeder nor gain any profit for breeding.

I would to contribute in developing goldens that are more the just pretty dogs but actually can hunt.

Lastly, I would not even consider breeding my dog, if clearances come out poor.

Good on you for pursuing some goals for your dog, what titles are you talking about by the way?

Hips, elbows (OFA certification) and eyes (CERF) would be the bare minimum. As krakadawn mentioned although preliminary hips and elbows can be tested (18 months), the OFA will not certify hips until a dog is 24 months old. Additional tests can be a little more breed specific - EIC and CNM for labs, I believe cardiac and thyroid for goldens.

Depending upon the the time frame you are looking to have these tests run ... Early in April every year the Golden Retriever Club of Greater Toronto holds a two day clinic in Hillsburgh (north of Georgetown / Acton area) where you have the opportunity to have hips, eyes, elbows, pra, thyroid and cardiac all done at once.

Hips and elbows. Eyes yearly with an othomologist. There are eye disease (PU) that can show up at any time in there lives and there is no test for PU. You should also do Pra-prcd and PRA 1. Then there is heart, thyroid and ichthyosis. If you go on the optigen web site there is a list of tests they recommend for goldens. What breeding is your guy?

My pup has his JH, SHR and WC. I know they are basic titles but i am working with him to get to the next levels.

Are thyroid & cardiac clearances an annual thing also?

Secondly, can a normal family vet do hip and elbow clearances? And what prices I am looking at?

Nice pedigree bonecollector23 ! I always liked the Tidewater dogs. Get as many clearances as possible and talk to your breeder as well who you purchased your dog from. The breeder will have much insight into your dogs past and present health concerns to be tested/cleared for. If he is a fine example of what the breed should be with all the necessary health clearances then talk to your dogs breeder for other breeders that may want him as a stud. Good Luck ! My Springer will be bred this coming July to an American Springer. Looking forward to having pups around the house again.

The only annual eye clearance is for eyes the rest are a one time only. The cost depends where you go any where from 300 and up. You are looking at +/- $1000. Get in touch with mark he can help you out.

Check out the Golden Retriever club of Toronto. They put on an annual health clinic event at the Graham Animal Hospital. Unfortunately for you this has already taken place this year. But you can find out when they are putting it on next year and save yourself a bunch of time and money. I know hips elbow and eyes cost about $340 this year as my boy Jim was tested so that he could start breeding. Anyway you might be able to find other clubs putting on events that are similar that will get you a one stop shopping for this or contact the aforementioned club to find out when their next clinic will be held.

And you can also check with your provincial and national breed club.
