I have a friend and she just went fishing for her first time. She wants a all purpose rod and line. More bass than anything but walleye could be in her future or pike (with a wire leader ). I thought a 6' medium action rod mated with this (http://www.basspro.com/Zebco-Omega-P...duct/10210694/) and white braid 10lb line with a 6' 15lb flurocarbon leader. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Bump up to 20lb braid and ditch the fluro. It will catch mostly anything for the average person.
Yep! Keep it simple for starters. I personally never liked spincast reels because they had so many faults but todays reels may be a big improvement over those aggravating things I tried. They would fit a womans hand however.
Just in case you decide to go to a spinning reel, make sure its small enough to fit. Let her operate the bail. Some are just too long between grip and bail to operate comfortably.
I think 6 ft is a bit short for a rod and I'd certainly look at a 2 piece instead of one piece.
I don't think you really can't go too wrong with anything you do buy for basic casting.
Its only when you get into specialized fishing, such as trolling for lakers that you would have to pick a different setup.

i run 7 ft medhvy rods with 30 pound braid on the reel, I always go quantum reels
i would recommend her to start using spinning gear right away
I'm with everyone else that it's best to start off with a spinning reel. I'd look at ones in the 2000-2500 size and match it with a 2 piece medium action rod in the 6'6"-7' range. I would tend to suggest spooling it with 8-10lb co-polymer line but if you think she's willing to go to braid then 15-20# is good.

Ditto..I've never used more than 8lb line for bass/pike/walleye. In fact thats is all we used to use for Coho out in Victoria years ago... like the feel and like the fight.Quote:

Man 0hhhhh man - back in the day - I wish I had a female friend who like to fish.
Spinning reel and 6' to 6"6 rod max. We all started fishing at some point and I guarantee no one started with a longer rod. A shorter rod will allow better casting accuracy and control when starting out. Also I would not use braid for a beginner. Use mono. You do not want to have to teach someone new to fishing how to attach a leader to braid. Again, most all people start with mono or started with it. Learn one or two knots and your good. As well its forgiving and simple. Keep it very simple. You can always upgrade to a longer rod or different line types later. Keep it simple, 10 lb mono and your good. Make it to complicated and she may not like it so much.

You can fish successfully without attaching a leader to a braid. The thousands of fish from panfish to trophies ive landed certainly havent cared.Quote:

Funny, I have a rack full of rods, and reels, but the older 6' med-light spinning, with the quantum spooled up with 6lb mono is the one that get's taken most.
