Looking for a started retriever. My lab is 11 now and time to slow it down for him.

Would also check on Retriever Training Forum (RTF) www.retrievertraining.net ..... Bigger market, bigger audience and a specific Started Dog classified section to monitor.
Budget ? And what level do you expect the dog to be working at ?
Sorry. I do a lot of field hunting for geese and ducks. Also water hunting. just looking for a dog that knows the basics.
Loves to hunt. doesn't have to be hand or whistle trained.
Hope this helps
Started dog from Ontario listed on RTF today in the Started Dog classifieds.
**** Just noticed the same dog is listed here in the Hunting Gear Section.
I think you are basically looking for an untrained dog. For most the 'basics' mean most of the following:
-sit, stay, come(here), whistle sit, go when sent and steady...steady....steady. The basics actually continue with more taught skills.
When you find what you are looking for please be reminded to check health clearances. If you're not sure what to ask for then ask and we'll give you a list.
Yes would defiantly want her house broke. Come sit, stay ect.
Would also like here to be use to the gun and has retrieved water fowl.
Thanks
A non pup kennel dog from a breeder won't be housebroke. Takes some work to house break a non pup who is used to peeing in the kennel when it feels like it.
You will most definitely have to invest a few bucks for what you want. My daughter adopted a 9 month chocolate lab already house broken from Big Sky Ranch Kemptville Ontario last fall. She lucked out in a big way ! The dog is wonderful and is out of working bloodlines.!I have been working with my daughter's lab on and off since last fall and she is retrieving to hand on land and water. They just advertised a field English Springer Spaniel as well and was able to find a home for him as well. Check out Big Sky Ranch Kemptville.
FYI ... This is a animal sanctuary and not a retriever breeder. If you are fortunate enough to find a lab there GREAT ... But if you are going to invest your time in locating and $$'s in purchasing a "started" dog, hopefully you would be able to find a dog where you know you have health clearances - hips, elbows and eyes (as a minimum) as well as CNM and EIC clearances.
Yes i am very much aware of that and have had many health cleared dogs in my breeding program for well over 20 years and a huge promoter to the public on health cleared animals. I am offering him another option if funds are limited . Big Sky Ranch does a fantastic job of finding homes of a multitude of breeds . All dogs ,cats etc. are examined by a vet before they leave and are either spayed or neutered . All other health issues are discussed with the potential client if any. This is not to replace a reputable breeder but another option to people who want to adopt rather then go to a breeder. My daughter was very fortunate to adopt this 9 month old lab from Big Sky Ranch and has a soft spot for abandoned or abused animals. She will even be tested for CNM , EIC, along with eye examination for piece of mind.
Thanks for all the help. This will be my fourth hunting Dog. Just getting to old to go threw house and hunting training.
Thanks again
PM sent excellent opportunity !!
