Best places to buy a bow

I am interested in bow hunting but haven't yet tried. so i do not want to go out and get the best bow there is but at the same time I don't want to buy crap. would like a bow that will last me as/if I get better at hunting with it. Two questions:

1) which places should i check out to purchase a bow (i am in Toronto area and don't mind driving a good distance if it warrants it.)
2) any thing i should know when i am shopping? e.g. makes to stay away from, accessories i do or do not need.

I bought my last one at Wolf's Den and was happy with the service I got. Plus they have a really awesome range on the spot. Personally I'd go there over Bass Pro every time.

I have had great experiences with Moosemeat Archery in Blackstock (will tune and set up your rig). Easthill Outdoors is also a great location.

The Bow Shop at Shooter's Choice in Waterloo, great assortment, they can help you set it up on the spot, and a range to try everything out.

Bought my last bow at Shooters choice few months ago. I tried about 10 different bows, the guy helping me told me to take as long as I want, great service.

Shooters choice is great, like a few guys on here have already stated...

I would second the Wolf's den great service and a range where you can try before you buy.

What does a decent bow normally cost you? I realize that a good crossbow will be in the 6-800 dollar range but what about the bow? It wouldn't really be cheaper would it?

Recurves are usually less than half the price of a compound or a cross bow,usually in the $250-$450 range fully rigged.

They're definitely the most cost efficient but they take the largest time investment to become proficient enough to hunt with.

Mateo - if you're just looking for fun on the range, a recurve can't be beat. If you're looking for a hunting bow, lean towards a compound or crossbow. You can hunt with a recurve of course, but it will take lots of practice.

OP - if you're ever up this way Saugeen Shafts is another good place that hasn't yet been listed.

Check out LeBaron's. They have a store in Markham and another in Mississauga. I've dealt with them for years and always got good service. They regularly have sales, and if you buy a membership for $25, you get 10% off all purchases. I bought an Excalibur from them about 10 years ago. Very happy with it. It's the only crossbow I have any experience with.

I dealt with Stacey at Cabelas in Barrie. Good price on the bow I bought and he took 45 minutes with me ensure i was comfortable and the bow was properly set up for me.

Bought mine used on the Archerytalk website. It's an American site, but bows are not illegal to import and require no special paperwork or rules (firearms are different). I purchased my top of the line "mint" Hoyt Nitrum Turbo for about $800 delivered. It retailed in Canada for double that price. I have shot it several hundred times and have had no problems. I'd highly recommend the site, but like any money exchange on the Internet, be careful.

Id also highly The Bow Shop on Colby, in Waterloo. Great staff, and great service. I bought my recurve and my sons PSE there. They made sure I was 100% happy before leaving.

Archers Nook London! Everything will be assembled in front of you, your draw length sized for your arrow length, draw weight set and adjusted, sighted in with staff and then yourself at their indoor range (At no extra cost). My excalibur crossbow, my compounds and all my archery gear always comes from there. Check em out online and give em a shout.

I highly suggest Archers Nook in London, good prices and their bow tech is probably one of the most knowledgeable people I've met.

I bought my first bow on here used to see if I liked it. Then went to saugeen shafts in Peterborough

are you planning to bow hunt this year? I'd get a crossbow then. You realize that archery is a very difficult skill? Especially where there are unknown distances and from heights?

Unknown distances and heights applies to hunting with a crossbow as well. I don't see the point in the OP spending hundreds of dollars on something he doesn't really want. Considering that he asked the question back in July and has probably bought his bow by now, he could most definitely be ready to hunt by this fall. He would have the better part of two months to practice if he wanted to hunt in October.
