Broadhead ideas for 335 Micro

I just picked up my Excalibur 335 Micro and am curious as to what people are using for field points? Excalibur recommends 150 grain tips on the 16.5" bolts. I am coming from a much slower Exocet (190 fps) and I was using 100 grain Xact mechanical and they worked well on several deer out to 40yds.

Just curious as to why Excalibur is recommending 150 grain broadheads.........seems a tad heavy and I have not seen a 150 grain mechanical, just the 150 grain bolt cutters?

I picked up some 125 grain target points to throw at my block this weekend to see how they fly - I will compare them to the 100 grains and the 150 grains the bow came with. Just curious what everyone liked and is using with this bow.

Before picking up my Micro a few years ago (when they first came out) I used an Excel Eclipse (also rated as 335 factory). On the Eclipse I upgraded the string, used brass inserts and 125g heads. Never weighed the net.

It shot at 317 through a Chrono.

The Micro with the shorter bolt,and 150g head shoots at 327fps.
Can I detect any difference? Not really. It might be a hair, just a hair more accurate at 40-50 and possibly carry a little more energy at 50 ( Bolts seem to sink a wee bit deeper) but that could just be my mind.

You can use a lighter head (125gsay) and you will gain a little fps.
Will it be as accurate at 40?
Will it hold accuracy as much in a moderate wind being ever so slightly lighter
Will it maintain the same energy (and thus pass through capacity)
Will a lighter bolt stand up to the energy being released (same as an Eclipse,but shorter limbs/rail)
Who knows. Some might argue yes, some might argue no.

What I do know, is that out of the box and using the 150g heads. Its more than accurate enough, has more than enough punch to pull the trigger on anything 40yards and under ( 40 is my personal limit) shoots just the wee, tiny bit faster than my Eclipse did. All I really care to know.

All the guys I know who hunt with crossbows have switched their bolts out to a premium bolt such as a Black Eagle Zombie Slayer and used the brass insert
not only are they way straighter at .001 but with the addition of the brass upfront you get the same FOC with using a lighter broadhead. Only problems I've witnessed is on some of the faster bows the rear deploying broadheads expand on launch causing them to plane out and become inaccurate

With these new Excalibur crossbows I would ensure I had a heavier broadhead like a 125 grain broadhead or heavier custom bolt with a heavier insert and get my total weight upto 400 grains. I just purchased a bulldog and will be shooting the boltcuters to ensure my total weight is at least 400 grain. This is going to create less stress on the limbs. If I had custom bolts with a heavier insert I would try one of the many expandables. For me these new limbs are shooting such a heavy weight I would just ensure total weights are at 400 grains. Limb stress at 270 or 280 pound draws are a real concern for me. So for now the bolt cutters are my broadhead.

I would say there are a couple reasons. The main reason is to ensure adequate FOC for the shorter arrows being used with the Micro. Greater FOC prevents the arrow from wobbling while in flight, which aids in accuracy at longer ranges. The other reason would be to ensure that the total arrow weight is well above the advertised minimum for the bow. Heavier arrows lessen the stress on the limbs when being launched.

First off congrats on the purchase. I'd go to 150 grain broad heads, like many have stated you will get more stable and consistent flight at the expense of a few fps, id take this all day long. I'm shooting 150 gr slick tricks with black eagle zombie slayers for total weight of 400gr out of my Matrix 350 LE and really happy with the arrow flight out to 40 yards.
would you consider trying a fixed blade BH instead of expandable?

I am open to anything. Other than the bolt cutters I have not seen a fixed broadhead that was 150 grains......but then again I have not been looking all that hard. Now I have not seen a 150 grain mechanical - not even sure if one exists.

I use a 125 slick trick with factory quills and have had really good results on paper and on game.... slick tricks have lived up to their reputation, for me and my micro anyway....

My Micro arrow recipe for my upcoming Bear hunt.

16.5" zombie slayers
Lumenok rear insert
110gr brass insert up front
125gr Exodus crossbow fixed blade head
SK 200 Vanes fletched with a right helical
FOC value 20%

Total arrow weight 425gr.

Scary accurate & will hit like ton of bricks... :)

I think it was mentioned above but slick trick has a 150 g broadhead specifically for crossbows. I have used them for years with great success with my exomax. I just purchased them for my wifes micro 315 with the excalibur lumenok quils

Good choice. I got a nice bear with my Micro 315 a few weeks ago using the 125gr Exodus head. The bear only went 15 yards after the double lung shot. Everything worked perfectly...

It's simple really. They recommend a 150g broad head because they make and sell a 150g broadhead with the bolt cutters and want to sell as many as possible. Trust me ;) Like many of said above many different combinations work. Have fun building your own set up. I second the zombie slayers for arrows.
