Ahead by a Century.....
I cracked a Moosehead and enjoyed watching. I have only been to 3 concerts in my life. Page/Plant and the hip 2x and that was 20 years ago. Great music. Good to see him enjoying himself with his fellow bandmates. The loss of G Downy will hit Canadian music greatly.
Now that I think back to that 2nd Hip concert, its weird. I can recall having difficulty standing due to an yet undiagnosed cancer. When the time comes Gord, I hope you do not suffer.
& F cancer.
Was drinking the Crown with Yedi. I thought it was a solid concert. I must say I thought Gord was showing the disease about mid concert (would look down at the tele-prompter, looking fatigued, etc). But whatever the roadie gave him mid-concert seemed to perk him up. My mom passed in Feb with gliobastoma. I highly doubt Gord Downie will see these words but thank you very much sir for everything you and your bandmates put into the past three decades.
He lost me when he started beaking off about the Turd. No need to bring politics into the show....twice....
Kow-tow to the CBC?
Great show , he is definitely a great entertainer! Saw them in Belleville a few years back and saw something I had never seen before , a guy in a wheelchair crowd surfing! I will remember that for the rest of my life.
Downie has been politically cognizant and active his entire career.
He's cared about water safety for the north for years and has been a board member for an organization trying to improve matters there.
Don't agree with his opinon of trudeau in the slightest... but he had every right to use the opportunity to espouse his beliefs one last time.
Trudeau and CBC aside, that was probably one of the best three hour events I've ever watched on TV. Like many of you, being 40, The Hip was the soundtrack of my late teens and early 20's.
Great show, well done Gord....
Also key to point out that the show was completely off the cuff and unscripted, and - most importantly - produced by a 3rd party company.
CBC just agreed to air it. They didn't have their hands on the technical, artistic or political details of what we viewed.
Probably why it was so awesome.
I watched the show. As a 70 year old it didn't do much for me, ( couldn't understand a word :) ) BUT, To see a man love music that much as to do a show when dying can't help but be very touching. To see the love the crowd had for him was amazing.
I don't think that any fan of The Tragically Hip could have watched that concert from start to finish and kept a dry eye.
Also the blimp in coverage was a drunk fan who fell and unhooked the feed for a few moments lol
I watched it with my wife(Canadian) in the spirit of a Canadian Icon and a National block party.
I have empathy for Gord, his family, friends and fans. I wasn't familiar with their music or history yet it was obvious to me that this moment was special to Canadians and I certainly support that.
During the concert, Gord took a political moment for the PM which I don't agree with but I might have done the same for Conservatives given the pulpit.
I pray he and family find peace and comfort in the end.
I think it needs mentioning that he (Gord) was probably up there performing while under the influence of pain meds, poor guy. He sounded rough but as you suggested, when you know the songs and have been a fan for years you could still apprecitate what he was doing. I noticed he never took his hat off as well, likely to hide scars/cuts.
Also, as mentioned about the CBC covering the entire 3 plus hours without commercials, especially during the olympics, looked good on CBC.
We watched it up at the trailer just outside of Kingston this weekend. Felt really bad for Gord trying to do his best. The Truedope plug wasn't necessary and we could hear the entire trailer park who was also watching scream in disbelief(anger) when the camera man panned over to Trudope.
Both my wife and I didn't really realize the impact it had on us watching it. We both spent the next day really depressed, bummed-out, and just plain sad. Even though we weren't die-hard fans, the music brought back a lot of good memories from the past 30 years of our lives. So very sad to think that 30 years of good music and great friendship will soon be over. Kinda like losing a bit of your childhood innocence. Sounds corny, but that's how I feel, even at 51. Doesn't seem fair, but then again it's life. Really sad to hear him wishing us all a good life, knowing that he's about to face the end of his. The fans in the audience just looked plain "lost" at the end of the encores. A loss for us all when he's gone.
We streamed it at our neighborhood party and not a dry eye when he broke down during Grace Too - many of us grew up with The Hip and to see Gord struggle through the night yet pull it off was both emotional and inspiring.
The "have a nice life" comment was powerful as well.
Not trying to sound like an a hole but if you listen to most of the music it is political and they have always been a left leaning band. And again had nothing to do with CBC they just aired it, commercial and interruption free.
But it could be worse http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...8a92fa5c8a.jpg
Holy mackeral - now you all got me wondering - how did ever get through life - I never heard of the guy -
The Hip are known in the states but they never did get the exposure which only strengthens that they're our own iconic Canadian band with one whack of hits.
A friend was telling me he could tell Gord was using a teleprompter. He was even having trouble following that, poor guy, and you could see the scar on the side of his head even with the hats he wore.
Cantcatchacold, I got a chuckle out that pic you posted..lol
I'm trying to find the one with Harper and bieber lol.
Yes they all used a teleprompter. And have for years, as most bands do. Trying to Remember lyrics for that much songs and also what key they are in is tough. I was at both Toronto shows and Hamilton and he powered through. Would have been there sat was the big show at the amphitheater.
One thing that hasn't been said about Gord was good on him for the tour to help the guys out. They ( the band ) had a much needed pay day from the tour and as much as it was for him saying goodbye it was also to see his guys get a good pay day send off and pay off the last record.
Your list is small compared to who made it big here but was never recognized in the US.
It is similar to Austrailian bands that we know about vs what is down there, not that it is a problem but it is reality. I grew up with 90s alternative, I have cousins my age in the US, they grew up down there and they have no clue who I was talking about when I talked about my favourite bands.
Pearl Jam cared http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/arts/edd...bute-1.3730236
But it can go the opposite way wi h music. Lots of Canadian bands on tour Stateside with festival season underway but have trouble filling small venues here. And in Canada it doesn't pay.

Not much to add..............
Even a broken clock gets it right twice a day. Maybe the CBC doesn't get it right often, but once in a while they hit a home run.
So? It didn't say "here's an editorial cartoon of every Canadian icon/iconic moment". It said Four images you'll only get if you're Canadian.
Ok then.
Ok...who is that with Harper ?
Ahhh thanks
I just can't stand his voice and how he sings.i love the band and the guys on drum and other instruments are great.

that'll do. That'll do
that last one is how I remember them sounding live, true to the recording. Godspeed Gordon.
For anyone that missed the concert there is a great HD feed of it (in full) on YouTube:

I wish they would play my.favorite hip songs live.
Small down bring down and 38 years old.
