I want to buy a muzzleloader (I think)

I have many rifles and shotguns but have never used a muzzle loader. I want to buy one for deer hunting but I know nothing about them.

I don't want to spend a fortune on one because I will be using it a couple of days per year but it will be nice to have a break from bow when muzzleloader week comes around. My max budget is $350 with a scope/red dot. I see a couple in the for sale section that fit this price range. My priorities are 1 safety and easy to use 2 accurate to 100 yards 3 use the pellets rather than a powder measure.

Can anyone offer any advice on what I should look for/give me muzzleloader 101.

Look at the CVA Wolf. Great ML for the money. Affordable and accurate.

That is what I have.... I bought mine on sale a few years ago for well under $300 scope included....

Check out the thread below, it shows what bullets, power and primer I use...plus a lot of other info too.... At first it might seem a little intimidating but after trying it out a few times, it's easy.... The most important factor for me was to learn a loading routine that I can easily repeat.
Watch some youtube videos and if you get a chance, go out and watch first hand how it is loaded... Like I said, easy when you know how...

A couple of friends own those as well, all positive reviews. I have the older Optima Pro and have no complaints.

CVA Wolf is a great budget muzzleloader.

The best advice that I can give is to shoulder an few different brands before you buy. I found the CVA product lines had a shorter stock than the Traditions line. I am tall with long arms and found the Pursuit pro sat/felt better than the Omega.

All else being equal (they all shoot great out to 100 out of the box) ...then 'fit' is probably the most important consideration in IMHO...

Another item for my wish list as well!

I went through this same learning process about 5 years ago. I bought a TC Impact and could not be more pleased with the gun. Cabelas has one with a Scope here: http://www.cabelas.ca/product/70161/...ope?CatId=2542

I have not put a scope on mine yet - the fiber optic sights are very good.

I use pyrodex pellets in mine so I don't have to worry about measuring powder.

Not to steal a plug from another member...Just note that I believe that is a bolt action (no picture) and they are not as easy to set the primer and harder to clean...most guys buy the 'break open' ML's now...much easier all round.

I have had thoughts in the back of my head like yours, one thing I have been reading a lot is that 3 pellets is almost useless in a barrel length that you would buy for deer hunting. 100gr of powder is way more than what is needed and the extra 50gr just ends up on the ground in front of you. I know a number of people here have played with loads and nobody has had their most accurate with 150gr or powder, some have used 80gr (1 50gr pellet and 1 30gr pellet) and lots of guys run 100gr.

Not that you do not want that option or the extra strength, I would get one that had that option, just to get a stronger action and barrel.

I am interested on what you decide, I am sitting back and reading at the moment but a Dec muzzle loader only hunt is an interesting idea.

Top end for now is the Remington Ultimate with a barrel rated for 200 gr ...but it will run you probably $1200 CDN. But if you're wanting a 300+ yd shooter..

I would be more inclined to shoot a flinter, just put myself 50 yards max from where I expect the deer to come out.

I still want to work out a way to shoot a 338 bullet in a 50 cal using multiple sabots, ha ha, a smaller higher BC bullet with identical weight, but we beat that to death a few years back.

In a previous post , you were denouncing one make of muzzle loader because it was a bolt action, now you are praising another ???.

I didn't' praise it...just informed Fox about it...

I'm still looking at muzzleloaders with the season coming up. I was looking at the cva wolf and accura but I am having a hard time finding differences between the two. I know the barrel is better on the accura but people seem to be getting very good groups with the wolf. Is it really worth paying double for the accura vs the wolf?

I don't know what the differences are but I guess there many reasons to buy a firearm, mine was to try something different and extend my gun season..... So I did my research and bought something that had a lot of good reviews and was not too expensive...(that was my criteria) it has served me well.

I like my CVA Wolf and it shoots good. Kills the same as the Accura (dead is dead)....

Whatever you decide on, enjoy it (have fun-they are nice to shoot)

i think some people take things a wee bit serious when someona speaks of a gun they have if they feel its slighted...

i never knew speaking about a muzzleloader if its based on safety or cleaning could be held in same vein as saying their kids are crackheads lol
but pride in your firearm is a good thing...

anyways you cant go wrong with Thomspon Center they are american made and owned by Smith and Wesson so their guns will be supported for some time and ive never heard one person having one problem with one of their guns... the dvd that comes with it is excellent for a new mz hunter..

the impact is a nice econo mz i bought one for the father in law, wife has a omega.. my father has a triumph and an omega, have friends with pro hunters encores etc etc all good

but for the cash TC omega is best deal around, simple cleaning, quiet and easy to load and remove 209 primer , very few moving parts = very reliable, barrells are bedded properly in stock and they shoot lights out.

i quit using shotguns long ago and use only mz in both mz and deer season...

we used pyrodex and 777 pellets in 150, 130, 120 grain combos... but found when we went to loose powder we could really tune in our mz...

125 grains for the TCs and 90 for the flints seem ideal.

we use goex FFF for the flint and american pioneer yukon gold in the 2 omegas... loose powder is much cheaper ( 25$ ) for a jug than a box of pellets. ( you couldnt use 20$ worth of ammo a year practicing and huntin which is great ).

I think for you, your two options would be the CVA Wolf or the TC Impact.
They will both function and kill like any other.
Personally, I like TC products.

T/C Omega would be my second choice..LOL

(Savage 10ML ii) but a little high on the cost scale if you can find one...:)

I have been told and read the same thing but I know my gun shoots 3 50grn pellets way better than it does 2 so there must me some extra burn off. as to how much? I have no idea. All I know is that I'm crazy accurate with it past 100yards and its repeatable shot after shot

The blackpowder is not all burned in the short barrels of these guns, maybe in a long barrel but in a short barrel you are blasting a lot of powder out the muzzle and it is not actually doing anything to the bullet. Maybe your load is actually 120gr but you are using 3 pellets, maybe 125gr, something like that.

Does that make sense? I know of a few people who have shot with white sheets out in front of them to get an idea of how much unburned powder if leaving the muzzle.
