GPS hunting unit

I have been considering some kind of off road navigation when I am on the logging roads when hunting moose. There are so many out there to choose from it can be a real head scratcher. I would like a recommendation from my fellow hunters. I just need a unit that can track my progress on the way in and out so basically I don't get turned around back in the logging roads wondering around for hours trying to find my way out of a logging cut. Don't need all those super tech bells and whistles just a good reasonably priced unit that's hand held and real easy to use .

Anything Garmin. I have a Garmin 64, with a BackRoads Ontario chip. It shows the logging roads, creeks, lakes, as well as topo info. I was surprised how detailed the maps were.

Same setup as Rick, can't go wrong with garmin.

I have a Garmin map 76 works great user friendly. But if you just want a little security for getting back out look into the bushnell backtrack they're under a 100 bucks I've never used one so I can't comment on effectiveness but it's worth a look.

Any of the current units will work. I would advise getting one with the longest barely life. No use having a unit that dies after two hours of continuous use.

Get something that is waterproof and if you are in a boat put something that keeps it from sinking (a bouy that you test at home in the bath tub). My Garmin is the best, I know exactly where I am and it tracks my path. I have the topo maps on it, one thing I wish is that I could download aerial photos to it but I do not know if that even exists.

I try to avoid the touch screen ones. I have a 5 year old garmin and it works great.

Overlay the photos on Google Earth, georeference them(align them exactly adjusting transparency) save them to Google Earth(increase the transparency so they will be readable) then send them to a .kml file I think, then load to your Garmin.

I've done it, however I used Google to search to find how to or maybe saw a you tube. I'm just not sure... Try........

I have a back tracker, got it at Sail couple years ago for about $60, definitely worth what I paid but a true GPS might be better.

The back tracker is great for tracking where you went, I plug it into the computer after and it basically overlays exactly ( long/lat temperature, speed, distance ) where you were over a Google earth map or road map.

Problem is at the time you have a 1.5" x 2" screen that just shows a line of where your walking, if you move back forth too much over a certain area or if you cross back and forth its very hard to see anything.

Basically its an etch-a-sketch line that follows you, too much overlap and its just a black section.

Still - would rather have it than not have, and for going back to maps from previous years hunt and seeing exactly where you were is pretty useful

I'm not going to buy garmin again. my handheld unit is up in age by now, but I was very disappointed back when I bought it to find out that firmware did not support hardware (which I payed good $$ for) and they never cared to update it. Garmin's map was also off by over 500m (good satellite reception).
I had other similar issues after windows 7 introduction with the 32 to 64 bit change, but the lack of support was then for expensive certified units
the units are okay, but not cheap and the company gives a hoot about their customers

I have a Magellan but very rarely use it anymore. I have it in my backpack as backup. It has key waypoints in it to get me back out of the bush if needed, but now I just use a app on my phone. There are many out there and I'm looking for a new one right now. Google had "my tracks" and it was fantastic but it no longer works.
I used to use it while snowmobiling, was neat to look back and actually see where I was riding.
We all have our phones with us, why carry a second device?

I have several GPS type apps on my phone but battery life is better witha Garmin and so are the other stand alone features.

I have Golf GPS(Good for that long shot, just drag a cursor from your location to any spoton the map and it immediately lists a distance in meters or yards). I use a LRF also.

Motion x-GPS is also on my phone yet seldom used.

I also have Google Earth, Google Maps and Apple Maps yet the Garmin gets the nod in the backwoods.

Garmin Montana 650....works great...had a GPS76csx before some lowlife broke into my truck and stole it along with a few other items!
