So did anyone get out for some early goose and if so how did you do?
[QUOTE=fratri;988231]I went and brought my gear after dinner....it was hot, I sat in the truck and waited until dark.... Nothing flew....[/QUOTE
Lucky nothing flew while you were watching LOL that would of sucked. At least you enjoyed a nice air-conditioned truck
got two but it took almost the entire day. very few flying, I think they spent the day at the beach cooling off lol.
Thats good you got two maybe start hunting the beach lol
Had a good opener, short morning hunt until 9am and ended up with 16. Went out after work and shot a limit of doves..
Not yet, I'm heading out tomorrow. A buddy of mine didn't have any luck yesterday bit is doing fairly well so far today. Must be the temperature difference.

just getting ready to leave for the afternoon and evening, let ya all know tomorrow. lots of rain forecast for sat so looks like may have to pick it up Monday.
Figured there'd be more reports up over the last two days.
ill be out in the morning at a blind on a pond. Only found one field with a few geese in it and there's already guys hunting it.
don't have too high of expectations, but with my limited time frame and the rain holding out I'll take what I can get. I have shot a few early geese here in the past so here's hoping!!
good luck out there, shoot straight and play safe.
Very few moving for us. Managed to get a single that came in at daylight and that was it. Way to hot
Had another good opener with 9 geese for my morning.Lots of other shooting going on.
It's nice to hear some guys are getting some luck. I'm out the door in a couple of hours lol can't sleep yet
I haven't went out yet for early goose , might get out next week if I can or I might even message my friends and see if they are hunting early season and see if I can go with them hunting.

Heard a few Geese this morning flying.
We shot one crow this morning, no geese flying where we were....Always nice to get out regardless....
If there was an early season on woodies I would have cleaned up. Had a single goose pass by and a group of a dozen, but couldn't bring them in. Still sitting in the blind until the rain picks up again than I'm out of here, but here's hoping some geese pay a visit in the meantime!!
Saw a flock of migratories heading south over the Ottawa River near Mattawa. Resident geese seem to be content to graze in town.
seeing flocks fly by but not coming in. few ducks came today but too far for a shot. duck opener this morning here in sudbury.
Went out goose hunting for the first time ever this morning. I was lucky enough to have a family member take me along.
It was a great experience setting up and watching the birds act and react to the spread and calling. We could have done without all the rain this morning making it pretty muddy and awfully wet down this way.
Saw a whole bunch, but I still managed to get two in spite of the weather. My uncle got the other one.
All in all I would say a really great day and looking forward to getting out again next Saturday. Attachment 33337

Got out this morning, we jumped two birds walking in that we couldn't see but had no shot. Then had 5 more birds fly by but out of range. They seemed interested but they had other plans. Still nice to be out
3 man hunt this morning in Ottawa.

Got out this morning for the first time in years. A good friend of mine just got his hunting license and it gave me the push to try some waterfowl again. Today was his first ever hunt and although we only managed a lone goose, we had a great time.
We were in the Richmond area.
Holy Crap its 7:50 here and it stills sounds like WW3. I can't see a thing outside not sure what they are shooting at. I guess legal shooting time finishes at 7:51
7 down this morning. Should have been 9. Great hunt otherwise.
Had a board member make the long drive to my place and join me for Friday morning. Not many birds flying, Cest le vie we had a great day, shooting the breeze instead.

Went out Friday morning by myself - set up in a wheat stubble field by the Grand River. I have 10 silhouette decoys that I made and hand-painted 10 years ago.
Wanted a few birds to make goose jerky.
Easiest goose hunt I've ever had! 3 shots and 3 birds within 10 minutes - Every flock flying off the river came to my calls and decoys.
Quit after 3, as that was enough for jerky batch, but could easily have had 10!
Kneeling at edge of field cleaning birds, and geese flying right over me. After I finished my 2nd bird I stood up to get the third bird, and there were over 15 geese standing among my silouettes looking at me - unreal morning!!!
I've seen quite a few flocks flying in the Sheffield area in the evening's.
decided to go shore fishing instead yesterday morning to kill some timeand debated going for geese. caught 0 fish but had many geese fly overhead could have easily taken. Now looking for a shotgun/fishing rod combo over under style or side by side.

that is a fine idea!! i have tried the surf and turf a few times, and it seemed to shut down both the birds and the fishes!
if i had a piece of equipment that did both, that might change my odds!

I was out on Center Lake AKA "Stump Lake" (north of Brockville) lake for 3 days of morning hunting, hoping for a pass by during the morning take off. Nothing flew over me each day in range. The last day while paddling back... a flight of 7 passed 30 yards directly overhead.. As usual I missed on all 3 shots...I blame the canoe...... The good part was the over abundance of ducks flying around. It was crazy, I did not expect that so early. Bad part, once the park closes next weekend I loose easy access to lake. grrr
We hunted a cut oat field north of Huntsville. Had a great morning and shot 25 birds....followed up the next morning with 11. Good start for the 2016 Season. We used about 50 decoys in a classic U-shape and lay down blinds.
Hunting shouldn't be this hard. Was out Friday 30'c made for uncomfortable hunt couple of chances but couldn't capitalize on them mostly due to my half hearted hunting. Out yesterday better conditions though it was quite evident wasn't on the X birds flying however they were quiet one direction fliers though did managed a triple on a 3 pack that came in. One last crack at them Friday hopefully it'll go my way.
You have to be where they are going.

I'm struggling to understand some guys tactics. So it sounds to me like some of you guys don't scout at all, just have a field you have permission on then set up and hope the birds miraculously show up??? Then you are surprised when you have no luck.
Watch the birds on the roost, follow them to the field, ask permission on that field and you will have much better results! Like stated you have to be where they want to be. There are not a ton of birds around but definitely some good pockets of birds and we are gaining more daily.
As for this heat yeah it sucked but mostly for the hunter, the birds where still flying to fields to feed both morning and night. Better temps now, lets hope it stays this way.
Good luck the rest of the season!
Shouldn't be a struggle to grasp that when someone is 1 to 1 1/2 hours from their hunting area scouting becomes quite a challenge. Sometimes your securing permission on fields that held birds sometimes a week prior to the hunt. It is best to have the ability to lock down the night before but when your doing it yourself you got to make the best of what you have.
much easier said than done for some. I work all week and am expecting a baby any day now with a toddler at home. I did some scouting and so did my pals, plus we have some fields that get hit regularly, but all with standing crops, ended up finding some birds but didn't find anything I could get permission for, so resorted to my backup spots which often hold a few birds and sometimes these spots are impossible to scout. For me it's not about piling birds, it's about doing my best and in the end just getting out abd making the best of it.
When you have the time to scout all week, or have a solid network of people looking out for fields with lots of knowledge and existing permission, this becomes a little easier to pile birds every weekend. I'm still not in that position, but hope to be some day!
Yes all valid reasons for the limited success for sure and I totally understand it's all about getting out and birds are a bonus. Sometimes you have to deal with what you are dealt and just want to get out. I wasn't tryin to come across as a dick but where I think I was confused as some were saying there is no birds and they are not moving in the heat and that is why they are having no success but it is clearly lack of scouting for whatever the reason may be, not lack of birds. There are birds and they are moving just not in your hunting spots......lol. Trust me I work for a living all three shift. Mostly 6 days a week sometimes 12 hour days and I have kids. My butt is scraping the ground after the last two weeks of scouting, hunting, working and being a dad.
Yes the game is a bonus but u have to do everything in your power to be successful atleast thats how i approach a hunt and life in general. If it means scouting before or after work and constantly knocking on doors securing permission then likely u wont be going home empty handed. Duckslayer is a perfect example of putting in the time and his efforts payoff!! ...lol
What time are you finding them leaving the roost this week??
Shortly after first light. Ducks are starting right at first light as usual.
True words of wisdom. Planning and scouting time is more important than hunting itself. If I have the option to spend a Saturday shooting a random spot and hoping for birds, or scouting, then I'm filling up the gas tank.
Hopefully we'll have yet another pile o' puddlers for the Central opener this Saturday!

If I had only one day to hunt I personally would use my head, scout the morning and hunt the evening. If I didn't come up with anything on the morning scout then hunt the long shot field and be happy that you at least put in a good effort. Hunt smarter get better results!!

Naw just couldn't take your advice. Got out for a bit of a hunt this morning. Great day to be out. Got to the field early and took my time to set up good thing as the birds were eager to play today. Mostly likely the full moon was the reason the first flock was in the field at 6:00 am. All I could do was wait till 6:30 to shoe them out. Good movement till 9:00am than every thing shut down. Nice to be home for dinner.
Was out Saturday with some first timers and a couple guys up from TO. Was not bad till it started to raining, then we stood/sat around in the trailer for awhile till we decided to go for lunch. Chenzo 191 was happy to stay and watch over the decoys and gear while we where gone. I think he just wanted to play with the air rifle, cause he sure shot up my .22 spinner targets.:goodstuff: How many tins of pellets did you go thru Vince? It must have been a couple, cause my poor .22 spinners where really shot up.:silly: Well after lunch with things still quiet, Mateo and soup headed back to TO. Yoki, Chenzo and I picked up and packed up the decoys and gear in about 30 to 40 minutes. We set out on a tour of Hullett to show the guys around and get us all a users guide...Ok I was checking the wild apple crop too.;) For anyone thinking of deer hunting in Zone B...the deer seem to be keeping the fallen apples cleaned up. Well driving around to Zone A I spotted a large Flock of Birds and since they guys were agreeable we stopped in the the farm house where they landed. After a nice chat with the owner and his wife, the three of us spent a couple hours trying to shoot some birds. I got a nice all white bird right off the bat, and then drop one that we could not recover because it was on a beam high on the wall. The cats will like that. Paul had a go at it and then Vince got one. All in all things turned out good. Got told to come back and hunt the place anytime.
Summery of the day:
Got to hunt with four great guys
took a short nap
got some practice in with the air rifle
had a nice lunch
can back to find my spinner target shot up real bad:scream:
checked out the wild apple crop
Got a new permission for hunting
Group shot three birds
showed Vince how to breast out birds( Paul got video he says)
Drove home in the sunshine.
Only got a chance to head out solo, on an evening hunt with pouring rain. Decided to pack light and only took eight homemade plywood dekes, not very tempting to the larger flocks but a double and a single were curious enough for a shot/s... one witness made it out unscathed.

First off let me say congrats on a decent hunt FFF................ but you have got to be the only guy I know who would look down on scouting and actually putting the effort in to get results.....consistently! You had one decent hunt out of what 3 hunts?? Ever heard of the saying "even a blind squirrel finds a nut.......once in a while" ........keep beating that chest........u the man! (I'm almost positive you have posted that pic before......)
I had an amazing early season, lots of big piles of birds, some bonus bling but more importantly time spent out in the field with a bunch of great family and friends! My favorite hunt though was a solo hunt with my daughter, she got the morning off school on friday and we both had the time of our lives. I called home from work that night to ask the wife if she said anything about our morning hunt, her response was "she hasn't and won't stop talking about it". That put a huge smile on my face and gave me the pick up I needed to make the rest of my shift more enjoyable!
Congrats to all who got out, birds or no birds it's just great to get out and kick off another fall season!!
I'll share a couple pics of our hunt.
