I have never seen a spruce grouse down this way but last night I grabbed my trail camera and there was a picture of what sure as heck looked like a spruce grouse.
The bird is very dark, no crest on its head but I have never seen one around here before.
The area has lots of ruff grouse, the bush is mixed with cedar, tamarack, maple, birdh, apple, popular, pear, pretty much every type of tree native to the area is here and mixed in meadows too.
It wasn't a spruce grouse. It was a cougar. :D
I was going to say, lots of grouse here....I hunt in a spruce forest but couldn't tell you the difference (spruce vs ruffed) between the females without my autobahn society book sitting on my lap :)
Probably just a ruffed grouse. Post the picture.

It could be a ruff, but it is really dark, the majority of the ruff grouse I shoot are brown to a lighter tan.
I will post the pic this weekend.

Could be Fox...one of the guys i use to work with at the Municipal Complex Kemptville said many years ago they use to hunt them in the Winchester area.Quote:

That's a ruffed grouse, you can see the band on the tail.

Surprised actually for all the years I have had out trail cams and the quantity of grouse I see I have very rarely captured a pic of one on the trail cam. Maybe there are to small to trigger them.
I had a pair that would come out every evening before dark, sounding like herd of hippo's coming across the dead leaves to take a few grains of corn and then head back into the cedars. They make far more noise than a 200lb deer.
I hate it when your walking home in the dark and you jump one on the side of the trail, scares the bejesus out of you :)
How often do you guys see these with a colour phase like this?
Every one I have ever shot has been more khaki to brown than dark.

Ruff...I hunted around kemptville for 30yrs for grouse..no Sprucies.... there was the occasional sharp tail near Winchester going back 30 yrs ago and used to be good hun hunting around Kemptville as well mind you..
