Im not an expert by any means but to me it looks like deer fibroma
Are they not ticks?
I would say ticks or flys but if I had to guess I would bet ticks
Loaded with "ticks"
Those sure look like ticks,to me. I've seen it before. Really,I've never seen tick infestations this bad on Deer and Moose since the 80's.
Covered in ticks. Better check yourself good if you hunt that area. I have 2 buddies now who have contracted Lymes. One in Gananoque and another in Long Point. Neither of them even hunt.
Can u eat that? I mean if u shot it would it be worth eating?
Could they be burrs or deer or horse flies? I figured ticks would be under the fur and much smaller.
They are fully engorged. Until they attach and start feeding they are tiny.
they are not ticks, they would be under the fur, and ticks are not black like that, only the head of the tick is black and the size of a pin head, the bodys are usually tan in color....they are most likely deer or horse flys.
They are tics, seen them on my dogs quite a few times, much more common in Virginia when I went down, we had them on most dogs and people ( I had two on me). They get filled with blood and the result is what you see.
I thought they were flies at first, but when I zoomed in, there is nothing flying around above the deer, and I can't see all the flies sitting on the deer with none hovering around above. So, probably ticks.....although it does look like there are some wings glistening in the pic.
I don't know what they are but I find it odd that they are all over the face and seem to be on one side of the deer more than the other... seems odd placement for ticks... but I've never seen what a bad tick infestation looks like.
When a deer swims through or lies in water the ticks crawl up to the face of the deer. Here is a pic of two ticks, one normal and the other after filling with blood:

This is what I use to remove them if I get one on me:

May seem like a dumb follow up questions but in all my years I've never run into a deer with any never mind what seems like 20-50 ticks on it.
Obviously do not shoot / eat this animal?
Update I have done research while waiting for the awesome forum support team!
Apparently eating venison that has ticks on it is perfectly fine! regardless of how gross skinning it would be with that many ticks on it..........
Ticks or flys
Seeing the corn in the back ground it appears the deer is around a farm quite possible it's just flies just like on a cow.
No that is Deer Fibroma. I shot one like that in December ML hunt a couple years ago and got a hold of MNR. That's what it was. No problem eating the meat and is caused by a virus not transferrable to humans.
yikes looks gross
Here's a pic of what Big Jack is talking about, looks like a real possibility.

From the picture's site:
"While ugly and in some cases grotesque, fibromas are merely surface blemishes as they do not spread to internal organs. In most cases, fibromas are small and resolve on their own. If fibromas are large, numerous, or in critical locations (eyes, mouth, etc.), they can result in significant disease and death. There is no treatment for fibromas in wild deer. As stated the virus associated with fibromas does not infect humans so the only concern for hunters would be fibroma with a secondary bacterial infection rendering a deer unfit for consumption."

They're not kidding about "Grotesque"... do a Google image search...... If you dare! lol
We ate the one I shot. It was tasty! LOL
if those are ticks you couldn't pay me enough to eat that... but it doesn't seem like tick to me either
