EAST ON Turkey Hunter "Meat" Up?

Wondering if there'd be any interest in a couple turkey hunter meet ups. These would be in early 2017.

I was thinking we could first gather for a gear & knowledge swap. Could be over breakfast, or even combined with a late winter outdoors show.

If that went over well, i was wondering if we could organise a couple meet ups (on crown land, of course) during turkey season where we can pair off with new hunters to see how others do it, and maybe learn a few new things.
We'd do a potluck lunch and then switch hunting partners for the afternoon and learn even more from each other.

Thoughts?

C'mon folks. 70 views in a few hours... but you're all too shy to speak up? lol

Sounds like a good plan but just too far for me.....

I think its a great idea as well. Theres always room to learn new tactics from others experiences. But like fratri said a bit to far from me

Gonna throw this out there one more time, considering the season is closer, the gun shows are gearing up, etc.

Anyone interested in getting together for a pre-season meet-up in eastern ON?

I guess nobody out this way hunts turkeys.

I think I would be interested, but how would we do it? I don't think anyone would want to give away their good spots. Maybe we all go to some neutral area and work from there. Maybe put 5 bucks on it for biggest or only Turkey. Limerick, Marlborough or Winchester bog.

I would be in..still searching for first one. Came close a few times, but no joy.

Well as my OP mentioned, it'd probably be good to gather for a breakfast or lunch, perhaps on a gun show weekend first... to help any newbies get geared up before we try hitting the woods.

Then meet up again in May for the actual hunt.

the Old Co-Op in North Gower is having a Turkey Season primer April 22nd

Seeing those show dates I would prefer Renfrew for March 4th or 5th.

It's a decent hunting show in an accessible town, held early enough for newbies to get plenty of info and gear prior to the season starting.

Added bonus is that Renfrew has The Rocky Mountain House... Which is by far one of THE BEST restaurants in Ontario, and has no problem accommodating large groups. As well as the Gourleys Hunting & Fishing store.

IF a hunting show is NOT key to this gathering, then a meeting in either Richmond (That Hunting Store) or North Gower (The Old Co-op) would work well also.

We have a 50 cent shot thing going on, I will probably be working there, they have rifles, handguns, black power firearms and shotguns as well, fun for the whole family and the breakfast is delish and cheap too.

I will be working there for both, let me know what day works for you and what time and I will try to get a replacement for the half hour or so, either that of the rifle range shuts down for a little bit.

You won't miss much for syrup, just collect that day and boil the next, easy peasy

You're looking at it wrong. You see it as work, with a schedule that just needs to be adjusted.

I miss helping out with the syrup, I hope to help the neighbours this year, work to own sort of thing.

Can we get those interested to sound off with a preferred day to meet at the Prescott (Grenville) hunting show - Sat April 1 or Sun April 2.

I would prefer Sunday. Less work and chores to deal with and vendors at shows may be more open to wheeling and dealing on day 2.

I am there working both days, give me a time and I will try to get that time as a break time.

I will be on the rifle range.

I'm in. Either day is fine, but I would prefer Saturday.

Since there was some interest from newbies to turkey hunting i will be bringing some items to sell off cheap.

Things like:
- barely used spring/fall camo clothing
- spare coke tubes
- pot & box calls
- spare pot call strikers
- spare 20ga & 12ga turkey ammo
- spare day packs, lunch coolers, etc

I encourage others to do the same. Turn this into a good little swap meet.

This could be fun. Since my move to Kemptville last fall, I haven't had much of a chance to get out to meet locals to get permission to hunt. I've spotted several turkeys in my neck of the woods, but still need to find out who owns the land. I have a spot east of Ottawa that is my go-to, but I'd like to give my new home turf a try this year.

Turkey hunting is easier to line up, deer hunting around this area can be locked up pretty good.

To start out take a look at the Limeick Forest, it is public land just south and west of Kemptville, lots of hunting spots down there and not all that many people most of the time.

This is too far East for me, but if your looking for gun shows try this.

As fox said, permission for deer hunts will be difficult to obtain, but turkeys are not heavily hunted in Eastern Ontario yet, despite many landowners viewing them as little more than winged pests.
Now is a great time to get out and lock up prime turkey plots for years! Good luck.

Please keep it going. I am interested. I am a newbie but went out with a guide last year. The knowledge and guidance was worth it. Please count me in any date.

Nearing 2000 views, and i've received a few PMs too, obviously there's an interest. Yet not many folks stepping up to confirm they'll attend.

At this point it's still a go, and the few who've replied have all stated Saturday works for them, so we'll go with the Saturday.

Full disclosure though - and i stated this way back - the late date is definitely going to conflict with syrup season. Not sure how many guys that'll effect, but I'm one of them.

So Wifey will make breakfast? Tell her I like scramble eggs, bacon just slightly crispy. (Took me 20 years to train my wife). ;)

So how's diaper changing duty? I use to be able to change them pulled over on the side of the road in -30 in less then 1 minute and be back on my way to NB.

She did last year, made you breakfast then, ha ha ha, but she is not working this year, too much with the little one but she said she will try to come down when everybody is coming by. She knows Greatwhite and MikePal, so she will find you guys.

Won't hurt to bring it just incase. But as you have seen from the list not very many new hunters. I don't know they always say they want to meet people but they never come out. But next week there will be at least one on the forum that says he didn't see the thread. :)

I didn't think I would be able to make it to this one, but it looks like I might be able to, but I don't want to look through 10 pages of posts to find out what is going on. What I know is that it involves the show at the Grenville fish and game club.

The original idea brought forward by Odmott was a turkey hunt and this would be the prepartory stage to meet each other and buy, sell or trade some Turkey hunting equipment and give newbies some information. Then on another date maybe around Kemptville we all me to go Turkey hunting.

So over time it kinda morphed into a breakfast to meet at the Gun day at Grenville Fishing and game club April 1.

There had been a number of posters planning to start turkey hunting this year with the changes in licensing, who didn't really know where to start or what to buy.

Figured a meet up could help them out, and save them a few $$$ if guys had used goods to sell.

A few weeks later, it seems the newbs have all the gear and knowledge they need �� and they aren't so keen to join us. Lol

Oh well, I'm looking forward to it.

We're here... Not recognizing anyone. Stopped at the canteen and now wandering the vendors again.

Nice we all finally got to meet up...except we missed rf2..I saw him on my way out but had given up my parking spot already so I couldn't stop :)

The show was pretty good.... found a few deals so money well spent....also passed on a few, so saved some money.

GW will have to fill us in on how GW Jr, did on the range. Hope he had a good time.

I think I'll skip Richmond next weekend and save my allowance for the the show in Perth on the 22nd.

Were back home I picked up an OK deal on some 16 gauge shot 5 and some 270 Horandy 130 gr bullets for reloading.

Yeah he wanted to shoot just the handguns. He said we have lot's of rifles at home but only one 22 sig handgun. Later this year I'll be buying a Torakev :)

Yeah it was nice to finally put some faces to names. And that was a good little show.

Found some good deals myself, I was surprised. One guy had flextone calls for 1/2 what Cabela's is charging.

We ended up skipping breakfast and beelining for That Hunting Store in Richmond​ to check out their sale and found some great deals on a couple key items too.

I was there from 10 to about 12. I didn't recognize anyone at the breakfast spot (other than Fox's wife and baby), so I spent my time looking at the guns. There were a couple of deals, but nothing that I really wanted that badly. I saw Fox at the rifle range but it was pretty busy, so I didn't stop to chat. GW, there were some .375 projectiles at one of the tables, I'm surprised you didn't pick them up. Sorry I missed the rest of you guys. Maybe next time!

Yeah I say those I think 255 grain or were they 235 but they were not flatnose so you could only load 2 at a time. But I have found some more 375 Win. I bought some 270 bullets from the same guy. I so MikePal, Fox and Otto and his brother. I let my son do some shooting. I'm hoping I can find a weekend to take hime down there to shoot our guns.

My wife said she saw someone but remembering names is not easy, she said "one of the guys from the Kemptville breakfast", ha ha. The range was busy, we went through 2480 shots in the first day alone, a lot of new people who had never shot before, really fun getting new people out there.

Other than the funds raised for the clubs activities, that is the second best reason for holding that kind of day...introduce future gun owners and hunters to shooting in a safe and fun environment. Kudos to the Grenville Rod and Gun and it's members for holding the event!!

We do not really make much, they buy a gun to raffle off as a door prize and about 1/3 of the ammo was purchased. The point of the shoot is to bring people who may normally be scared of guns out and have them realize that with the proper training they are very safe and very fun to shoot.

Speaking of raffle...there was NO message on my machine..did you pick it for me ? ..LOL...

The guy who won picked up the rifle before I left on Sunday.

I do have to apologise, as 9'er domestic convinced me to go to the Winchester Auction on Sat AM. No excuse I caved and changed my plans, I did however bid on 3 .22 Cal pellet guns (new) and got 1 for $40.00.

Of note Jul 8th will be a big gun action as announced with they said 4 estate sales of guns. I was amazed at the price of stuff sold and many walked out with items for pennies on dollar.
