I am planning to go to Pennsylvania for a Muzzleloader hunt. I have hunted in the US before and applied and received the ATF import permit. But it seems that this is not required for muzzleloaders if I am reading the rules correct that muzzleloaders are exempt. I will be using a flintlock.
Question: Does anyone have experience with crossing the border with a muzzleloader. Any issues bring Black Powder?? Thanks.
You are correct, muzzleloaders are not firearms for the purposes of import or possession in the States.
Friends hunt in Ohio and have no issues bringing powder or MLs into the country. Just be sure you tell them at the border...
I just went to Michigan for the ML hunt and back to Ontario. Zero issues bringing my ML and powder back and forth. Just be sure to declare it. I got the green declaration of goods card from Canada customs on the way over just to be safe...
I bought my first ML over the counter at a True Value hardware store in Potsdam NY. No FBI check, no questions asked. Put it into the cart and walked thru the cash.
Back then the only issue I had was that I had to leave it with CBSA till the paper work was faxed and the gun was registered with the RCMP (took a day).
Nowadays you just grease their palms with some HST and your on your way.
Air rifles and Archery gear is the same way.. declare it. You may get a few questions.

So i can go to the States purchase a muzzle loader drive back declare it pay HST and no problem ?

Nope, you didn't mention flintlock, which might lead some to believe that all muzzleloaders require a license to bring into Canada from the US. I was just making the distinction that flintlock muzzleloaders do not. :-)
Does any-one actually hunt with a flintlock anymore? I would think they would be purely for decoration now...lol
YES some of us hunt with Flintlocks !....just like some hunt with long bows or recurves ....to add another element of challenge and required skill. Pennsylvania has an deer hunt where only Flintlocks can be used....and I am planning to go right after Christmas. Let's face it, when it comes right down to it, border guards, or even regulars LEO's can charge you with anything, and will, if you give any attitude. Then, you can take time off work, travel to the court location, with all your evidence, and sit around, waiting for your case to come up. Thanks everyone......just an update on my trip. When crossing into US, the US customs officer said I think there are some special rules on muzzleloaders. I told him I had an email from the ATF department that they were exempt from having to get a "temporary import certificate". He tried to confirm this by calling someone...but did not get thru....then said go ahead. Maybe hung up 4-5 minutes.
Returning to Canada I declared I was returning from Deer Hunting with a muzzleloader and a deer (which had been butchered...no head, hide, etc.). I was simply asked if I had any other weapons and anything else to declare. On my way in about 2 minutes.
