New slug gun project
I am working on a very special slug gun to use next season for the controlled hunt. Just picked up the rifled bbl and will be mounting the rings and scope in the new year (the rings are just sitting on it for looks now). Over the winter I will test out some sabots at the Burlington Gun Club to find the ones she likes.

Yes.......it is a Beretta 391. A very close friend of mine passed away shortly after hunting with him on the Nov controlled hunt. We have been hunting together for the last 11 years. A couple of weeks back his brother called me told me to drop by his house when I had a chance. When I was there he said Ty would want me to have something and handed me his brothers Beretta 391 Ureka 2 shotgun (he used this gun for everything - turkey, duck, goose and deer) - I was speechless!
My buddy loved his guns and toys so I figured Ty would approve of me turning this beloved shotgun into a pimped out deer slayer! I will keep everyone updated as it progresses.

Sorry you lost a good Bud. Nice idea to repurpose that gun. As others have requested - please provide some pictures of the transformation plus the final photo with a deer on the ground.

A great gift. I am deeply sentimental, your friend will walk with you on every hunt. Good luck getting it together.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement. I managed to find a pair of rings in my buddies work shop and will re-use his scope. But I hit a bit of a snag. When I brought the barrel home from Al Flaherty's it was still in a plastic bag and packing grease. So last weekend I took it out and started to clean it up and found what looks to be stress cracks on the gas cylinder housing (see attached photo). I contacted Stoeger Canada and asked them if it is safe to shoot and I am waiting to hear back from them. Last thing I want to do is wreck the gun and/or get injured in the process.
As many of you know a 391 rifled slug barrel is pretty rare and finding another is like searching for hens teeth. Hopefully the word back from Stoeger will be positive!
I will keep you posted.

Looks more like a casting defect (shrink cracks).

I have a 391 with slug barrel topped with a leupold vx 3 1.5x5 heavy duplex. The slug barrel is thicker then field barrel and it did crack the forearm which has since been was replaced before I inherited it. Everything was purchased at Giovanni gun shop when it was still open in TO. Mines a shooter. Good luck with the build!

Yes wood. Rough sanded forarm down and have not had a problem since could have been fluke or imperfections in previous one. Mine like's Hornady sst. I'd post pics but don't know how

Hmmmm, now you got me thinking... I have a Beretta 390 that came to me in a similar way. I might have to explore the possibilities.

Quick update......the good guys at Stoeger Canada want me to exchange the bbl for another one that does not have the same stress cracks/marks. Shipping it out today so lets see how smooth the process goes.

Good to hear. Anytime I've had to deal with Stoeger(not often) it's been a positive experience . Hope things go well for you. Looking forward to seeing your progress with t his project. Cheers B525

Well thanks for your patience. Well I contacted Stoeger Canada before Christmas and explained that I just bought this new barrel and it had the marks on the gas chamber (I included some pics in the email) and asked the $1MM question......"Is this barrel safe to shoot?" They asked me to ship them the barrel for examination and then I received a follow up email from them saying they will be sending me a new replacement barrel. Stoeger Canada was excellent to deal with taking only three weeks to resolve this issue (including Christmas Holidays and New Years holidays) and my new barrel arrive in the mail today!!
Time to clean it up and get the build started!! Stay tuned my friends.......

After some delays it is finally finished. Turned out well - 391 Ureka 2 c/w cantilever rifled slug barrel, Bushnell Trophy XLT (2.75-4), Weaver Grand Slam rings.
I really do think my buddy (Ty) would like the transformation!! Next on the list is some range time to find out what sabot's that it likes. Thanks everyone!!
