Member there as well. Not much communication between anglers it seems
Yeah no one wants to say how the ice is because they want to keep people away. Potters is crowed and tough fishing but lots of ice.
Big bay has decent ice but also tough fishing with most people finding just perch. I have heard of a couple guys getting nice fish in big bay however but they are few and far between. Huffs had around 3" 2 days ago so should have at least 4 inches by tomorrow but of course be careful and spud your way out there.
Ice is typical quinte. 8 inches here, 2 inches a few feet over.
I don't like to share ice info, nothing to do with " my spot " but ice changes so much and don't want to say go fish here then tomorrow it's only 2 inches of ice and someone gets in trouble and goes through.
And just be careful. Saw a post on another forum about Sherman's. I was there today and on 3 inches of ice but guys report on forums that it was 8 inches.
That's too bad! Part of what makes it More safe and fun is having more people in the area. I know some people just don't respect "fishing space" and there really is no excuse for it but ice fishing has a lot of limits as it is. Weather, work, everyday life, finding someone with the same free time to fish etc
You nailed it. We head to Quinte once a year for a long weekend of ice fishing so good information is important to us but you won't get it on that forum, I did however make contact with a couple of good local guys on the forum that PM me with ice conditions and fishing reports
It's bad enough on lakes people see you fishing in a hut or clam they come right over and set up 20 yards away why would anyone advise about catching fish nowadays.
Lakers where on fire all weekend on Lake Roseau...
Half of the above sentence is true.
sounds like the same guys just want all the fish to themselves! I could see if you were in some little private spot that you found all by yourself but if you are in a well known area you have to understand that there is going to be other people
you also have to understand that fishing isn't the same as it used to be since the internet came around and joe blow finds out about ice conditions and tells all his friend now the word spreads a lot faster than you think... especially the ones that are within a couple hours from the GTA...
It seems a lot of people like to ask the questions but not provide the answers... which makes this website essentially their fishing google... sometimes its ok to go for a drive and grab a spud and start making their own observations.... instead of leeching all of the time... ive been on Quinte a few times this year all in different locations and like the rest said it can be 2" in one spot and right beside you it will be 6"... If people are worried about the ice and have to ask then the best answer is stay off until a cold snap... they might get wet
I fished a bay on a big lake in front of my house with my neighbours and we did very well for 5 yearsnever saw a sole.,.., then one day some snowmobiles came by knocked on the ice hut door asking how the fishing was.., unfortunately we were in the middle of landing a fish...
Next weekend they were beside us... By end of season there was 10 pop up shelters within 50 yards..
Next season there was 40 huts some permanent, some temp.
One night We went to our hut and there was someone set up close enough toys when I parked my truck beside my hut that when I opened the door I nearly hit his head he was exactly 3 yards from the side of my ice hut.
I know longer put my hut out on that lake and just use the clam fish weeknight a in other areas so the
Sponges have to find their own spots.
Ps the lake we fished on weekend I've never fished before, no one told me where to fish, yet somehow with a map and some experience and a little work we pulled and real eased 38 trout through the ice keeping 8 all weekend between 4 guys, keeping one each per day.
Point taken but in my case no where did I ask for someone's honey hole and never will but merely looking for ice conditions. I and many others are hours from Quinte and only fish it once a winter so personally checking ice conditions are impossible. That's where forums are important IMO. If someone from a distance needed to know ice conditions on Lake St Clair I would be more than happy to help them.
Wow awesome post. Member since 09 and 30 posts.
There are no secret spots on quinte. Quite a few maps posted here and other sites with all the public access points. We used to even run a few meet and greets on the ice for guys on here but comments like that have pushed out most of the old founding memebers on here ( woody, Screwbs, blue ice, scott, fishfanatic, mattdbz, big jack, Big Mac )
Op asked a question and it was answered. It has nothing to do with not giving spots but to do with keeping people safe.
Your right for that I apologize but at the same time don't think people don't want to help.
Yeah I have to move on again. Years ago a went on a mission on a lake that's well known, i drilled hundreds of holes with a friend who is as driven as me. We found hoards of fish we were targeting and for years nobody gave a crap what we were doing. They muscled in to see what we were doing, hoarded right in and then low and behold, by name and how the f to get there. He's there anything we show with new guests, not to mention all the other global citizens of the net who have pilgrimaged to that area. Fish numbers have nose dive, so between the lacking action and the belligerent self entitled attitudes, I'm out. My sled has miles to go and my augers got holes to drill again to find the next thing. If you sneek a peek on me In the future, watch, learn and shut the F up. If you have to talk go with texhniques, tackle suggestions or tips , don't name the exact place you're going to and how awesome it was, when you post you're literally telling the world.
sorry "cantcatchacold" if you got your nose out of joint ,but ill never be able to compete with your average of three posts per day ! I live about 2 and a half hours away , so its nice to hear some info before making the drive! I would never ask for someones secret spot ,and am glad to get the info I get, it just bugs me a bit when the guys who get to fish it everyday or every weekend ",suck out" when somebody new shows up,I thought one of the things forums were for, was information! I don't want your "secret lure", Ice conditions are great!
It is the trophy walleye capital of the world! Sorry did I say that out loud!
Just don't want to be telling people stuff that isn't true. Some forums are telling guys Ice is great when in truth it's 3-4 inches and changing by the hour. That's what I originally posted for the OP. Someone someday is going to get killed for believing everything they read.
Hope we get some cold cold nights soon. And when that happens il be out of huffs with a gold mr champ lol
I know I don't post much these days, (busy with the kiddoes) But I remember all those names.. I also agree with can't catch a cold that you can't always trust some guys post that ALL ICE IS GOOD, just last week some guy out here wrote that the ice was" 10" no problem getting out with my truck" I just shook my head...
Steve
I understand were your coming from!
We cancelled our trip to Quinte for Jan 19-22 do to the crappy weather and ice this past weekend so we thought we would relocate to Simcoe, just cancelled that one today............man this weather friggin sucks!!
thats bad news were planning on going mid feb. hopefully the ice improves
Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk
According to the weather guru's we are supposed to get the arctic air back in early Feb and last into late March........
fingers crossed.....Ill be back from vaca next week hopefully its colder then this week. Gotta test out my new gear..
Got an update last night. big island has 12 inches of ice, some open water. i will update again monday or tuesday
The report we got was much different than yours but I still believe there is good ice, I wanted to go but my partners wanted to wait for colder weather. Thank for the report
Unfortunately agree with a lot of the posts on here.
Used to post sub frequently on sites, too many people want easy street, looking at the backgrounds of pictures etc.
More people... less fish eventually. Call it what you want... selfish, not willing to help, whatever.
I call it tight lipped, just like the present bite on Quinte. lol
I have spudded my way out there and around some punky ice, only to see people see us out there and walk straight out without checking... stupidity, and I am not on hook for it. Pun intended!
Do your own work, isn't that what makes it fun!
The other thing is, when you are back at the truck talk to people, I have created a network of people that I can rely on for current updates of conditions. But the last thing I'm going to do is post ice conditions, "no ice is safe ice". No truer the saying for Quinte... 5" here and 1" 5 feet away.
teppy
Go on and say it... 2008 and 40 posts .. lol
If someone wants to take ice conditions off a message board without doing any of their own due diligence and just walk out, or just walk out because they see someone out there then the world is probably a better place without that tard!
Its kind of nice for those of us with two kids under 2 who probably only have enough time for 1-2 outingsin a winter to somewhat plan an outing if someone has posed ice conditions.
i always send my 5 year old out first with his life jacket and walk to where I want to fish... He's much lighter than I am so much less chance of him falling through...its tough to watch sometimes when he keeps tripping over the 100 foot rope I tie to his leg but if he goes through I want to make sure i'm ready to pull him out.... This tactic has worked the past few years with almost 0 hiccups lately anyway...
Cant be too careful on that sketchy Shermans point ice.....
update... 6 inches with inch of snow yesterday, cooler temps the rest of the week. i will update once more, tonight or thurs am..
between 6/8 inches. several people out. heading out this afternoon........
Are you willing to say where, generally, that is? I fished Quinte once a couple weeks ago, but it sounds like the ice varies a great deal due to the currents. I was in Trenton, almost straight out from the Bayside Motel where we stayed. And if folks are looking to hit Quinte, the guy there will give you a room for $70 with two beds if you haggle a bit. You can park in his lot and walk out the back of his place. I can guarantee that it will NOT be the nicest or most modern place you ever stayed, but it did give us a basic base to sleep and store our vehicle and trailer. Just trying to help out, no affiliation with the place whatsoever.
got back yesterday, good ice can be found between wagers and bay crest. lots of open water, use your spuds!!!!! we only caught 3 lost 4 others. no real big bite on yet.
