Experience with Goodyear Duratrac Tires

I'm looking for a new set of tires for my (old style) Jeep Cherokee. My current 3 season tires are mud tires which have served me well. I don't do as much off-roading as I used to, so I am considering something that is more suitable for on-road use, but still decent off-road.
My top contender right now is the Goodyear Duratrac, due to decent reviews and decent price. Does anybody here use these tires? If so, on what type of vehicle and what type of off-roading? What comments do you have about the durability/tread wear of these tires and their performance off-road? How are they on-road in wet conditions and snowy conditions?

The Duratracs is the best Hybrid AT/MT out there. Lots of guys use it and most love it.
Two other choices for you : Nitto Ridge Grappler or the Kinati Trail Hog which is a copy of the Duratracs.

I have these now on my lifted pick up. I do go off-roading and they are great. Road noise sure... turn up the radio. They do not wear as well as the bfg all terrains I had before

I guess the days when a 15" wheel was standard for off-road capable vehicles are over. Neither of those tires are available in 15".

Have the K02's, my buddy has the Duratracs. We were both on the same trail at the same time and my K02's filled with mud and turned into slicks, his Duratracs expelled the mud and he pulled me out.

The K02 warranty stinks, I had to replace one at my expense due to external sidewall damage, and I am currently fighting with them over the replacement for a second with internal damage.

just went from a set of dura tracks to the KO2s on a 04 GMC ...not a lot of serious off roading ..hunting stuff definatly deep snow (bumper deep) wet corn fields.. never a problem.. road noise and wet road performance would be my only complaints I thought the duratracs were a great tire.. tire wear was great imo...130 plus k... now the KOs...so far so good...may be a little better in the snow...definatly better on wet roads...hardly any road noise if any.. ride seems to be better also...only been on them for about a month and a half now...changed because company I work for runs the KOs on their trucks(good deal for me!! and I needed them) not a lot of off roading with it (company truck) ...but I do travel a lot of fire route roads hauling a trailer, snow covered and spring mud...not sure at this point if I could pick the better one for me......I really did like the duratracs though... good luck with what ever you decide!!...

Have you considered the Cooper AT/W? Descent price and wear well. Have had them on my JGC for 3 years and had no problems even on lakes ice fishing. My daughter still has them on the Jeep for the last 2 years for a daily commute. Being a hybrid you leave them on year round and save 5% insurance due to the snow flake symbol.
You can go to your local CTC and have a close look at the thread pattern versus the Duratrac to see if it will meet your requirements. They may not be as aggressive as you like? Depends on your needs.

I am looking for something a bit less aggressive, but still capable off-road, which is why I am interested in the Duratracs. I don't think the Cooper AT/Ws would meet my requirements.
A couple of people suggested the BFG T/A KO or KO2. I heard these are great on the road, good in the snow, but pretty bad off-road (other than regular dirt roads), similar to what Marker has said. Actually, I have witnessed for myself how poor they are in the mud - my brother had a set and sold them right away.
There are a lot of options, but the Duratracs seem to give the best bang for your buck. I'm glad to see some people here are able to confirm their performance.

I'm also seeing good internet reviews on this make as well.

Rob, I just put 4 of these on my F250. Everyone I talked with have confirmed at least 60K before they need replacement. I have gone thru 1 set of F250 factory tires in 3 years that was 50K of driving. Factory ford install tires are $1800 for my truck with heavy duty sidewall. I this set of 4 installed at CTC Merivale rd in Dec for $1314.00 installed. They go on sale twice a year for 25% off. I waited until that sale before getting them. Normally they are $349.00 per tire, plus tax, tire tax, installation and HST. Quote at full price 1800+.
I got to use tehm in the MB on paths I would never before, they dragged me thru axle deep ruts, and ruts I made on my own in the old farm fields in MB. Places I would have never considered before with factory street/off road/all seasons. In the snow far this year, I have not needed 4X4 yet. I was worried about ice and traction as they are harder compound then a Mickey Thomson tire (1/2 price too). I am pleased to say they have at least the same slip as factory tires. The off road and snow grip is just awesome.

Downside, my normal fuel mileage at with factory tires:
100KMH is 15/100, 80KM 10/100, 118KMH 17/100
DuraTracs
100KMH is 17/100, 80KM 13/100, 118KMH 19/100

So more fuel, but I am good with that. For me it was price and almost no worries off road. (to be clear I don't mud off road as the truck is too heavy)

^ Great input. Thanks. Yes, the CT sale is one of the reasons I am seriously considering them. I saw them on sale for most of the fall, but I was not quite ready to buy them. Hopefully they will go on sale in the spring.

Regarding fuel consumption, that's not a worry for me because chances are, my fuel consumption will improve with the Duratrac tires compared to my existing 3 season tires. This is one of the reasons I am looking for something that is a bit less aggressive/more suitable for on-road use.

I was looking at them as well but found the Hercules Tera tracks a much better deal.and thy have been a great tire.i spend more time in the feild and Bush then I do on the hyw..I am very happy with them and they are 400$ cheaper them the duratracs

Just put 4 Hercules Tera trac tires on my truck they seem like a good tire so far. And it was just over 700 with tax installed so I'm not complaining!

Which version of the Tera Tracs are you guys talking about? For me, I would only be interested in either the T/G Max or the M/T

To the originators initial question on the Duratrac tires:

They are a great tire. Pretty aggressive, handle snow like a champ, muddy fields, boat ramps etc.... They grip very well.
For highway and city driving - they're a bit noisy. The life of them is about 55-60K but for the price and the product, I'd say it's a good buy. We used them at work for a while until the contract ran out - the shop really liked them.
Good tire IMO.

What is wrong with the Toyo's? My local tire shop recommended them.

My last two trucks have been F150's and I had DuraTracs (295/65/18) on my last F150. As a cross between an AT and MT tire they were great. Fantastic in snow (they're made with a snow tire like rubber, soft) and pretty good in mud, but I got rid of them when I hit around 70 k km's. I couldn't stand the noise anymore. They also had soft sidewalls giving the truck a bit of a squirrely feel at times. I've had Firestone Destination AT's, BFG AT KO'S, GY Silent Armors and now I have BFG KO2's, (285/65/20) and as already stated (I agree) they aren't as good in snow and mud as Duratracs but they're as quiet as the stock tires and ride very smooth, and are a very tough tire (10 ply) for offroading . So far, with 20k km's on the KO2's they will be my go to tire from now on.

I have Bridgestone Dueler A/T on my 4X4 . 130km's and still no problem with snow or ice . They were a little bit of problem last fall in mud but got me through.

Just got my new duratracts on.my 2018 ram yesterday. Very happy so far. Little more road noice then the factory tire but not to bad at all .great deal at 25%off.

Toyo Open Country ATII on current truck and last truck. Great tire.
Won't save you 5% on insurance though. No snowflake on sidewall.

I love my toyo AT2s (285/70r17) I have them in 10 ply for my cummins. I run dedicated winters as well because Im on the road so much and tow I want to be as safe as possible.

The Toyos dont have the snowflake but seem to perform about as well as the BFG ATs (snowflake) that I had before them in the snow and ice. The BFGs also 10 ply didnt even hold up to the weight of the diesel on the front tires. These Toyos are wearing great and Im happy with how they perform for the moderate hunting and fishing related offroading I do.

2 years and 1 month later since switching to the DuraTracs observations real world usage. They are noisy, and get worse in the winter, but I don't care. Mileage has stayed the same. Traction on ice half what the factory tires provided. Snow performance is awesome, as with mud. I have had the truck camper on truck, and boat trailer in axle deep mud in 4X4 low and they keep pulling the truck forward. Very little signs of wear or knobby destruction. They shed mud like no tomorrow, but clay sticks like glue ( As I said before I don't off road, because truck is too heavy). They have been rotated twice in the 18,000 KM since I installed. Overall, very happy and I can go off road now as opposed to not even driving on wet grass with old factory tires. I only put avg 9-12,000 KM per year on truck, 2010 F250 (gas) with 125,000 KM

Do you mean half or twice? I don't know what factory tires you had before, but I find that the traction on ice is not bad with my Duratracs. Realistically, without studs, traction on pure ice is always bad, but with 4x4 and these Duratracs, I don't have any issues.

The are bad on ice, compared to factory Continental10 Ply that came with F250, I went through two sets quickly. What I mean by went through is the tread grooves in the treads wore out to point of causing slip issue with still over 1/2 tread left. The Duratracks are not good on ice conditions as they "harden up more in the winter. It is not too much of a problem as I drive to conditions...not just because I have a 4 X 4. So if you drive in icy conditions as a daily commute, I would not recommend. Also, I thought because of the weight of my truck 6800 pds I would experience more front tire wear, this has not happened. The Continentals did this bad and had to be rotated every 5K for even wear. Again I think the ice traction issue is related to weight of truck. I will only buy Duratracks for my truck, very happy so far for the price.
