Hey, I was wondering if anybody knew the regulations on hunting small game like rabbits and squirrels with a slingshot in southern Ontario?
I have looked at the reg's in the booklet but can't find anything about slingshots. If you could please answer my question or point me in the right direction it would be appreciated!
When I say slingshot I'm talking good quality plastic, metal and wood ones with strong flat bands and shooting 3/8 steel ball bearings. Thanks
I've never seen them mentioned in any hunting regs, however I know guys in the city that use them for rabbits and such as they also aren't part of firearm bylaws for many cities.

Many moons ago, when I used to hunt moose in Northern Ontario, I asked a CO that same question, he said it was perfectly legal. The very next year, in my backpack, I carried a homemade Magnum monstrosity of a slingshot, made up of bent 1/4" SS rod and part of old shovel handle. Walking an old logging trail one morning I saw a Spruce grouse casually walking away from me, about 15 feet away. Well...grouse fever set in and I couldn't for the life of me find any of my packed pellets, so I reached for whatever projectile I could muster-up, in this case a rock the size of a large egg... In all my years of grouse hunting, I can safely say I have never made a more humane shot on a bird, hit him square between the shoulders and propelled it about a foot forward, I believe gun-hunters refer to it as a DRT shot.
I'd love to see that slingshot...mostly because I've whittled up a few eyebrow-raising ones too over the years. Still have the wildest one..interesting conversation piece. lolQuote:

completely legal in general. You will have to check your local bylaws to ensure you can hunt whatever small game your hunting at the time, but the weapon isn't an issue.
My guess is you will wound 10 for every one you kill. Why would you want to do that?
Not sure about that one. In a skilled set of hands I can see a half inch steel ball doing some major damage to a pigeon. I'll have to check youtube lol.

A CO chatted with me about hunting with them when I was around 10 at a Provincial Park. All I got was the ‘don’t shot out your eye warning” and be safe. They were not illegal then and glad to know that hasn’t changed.
This is the Crossman that I own now, but honestly haven’t used it to much in recent years. At least now that I own a .45 Kentucky ML I have lots of ammo...those .440 lead balls are perfect size by the way.

Yes, a nice little story for children. Don't see many Goliaths around much I guess slingshots wiped them out. I would venture a guess its little different than a trad bow and blunt head. If you hit its down stunned at worst,and not going anywhere fast, such that grabbing it and finishing it is easy, or instant if you hit where your aiming. At worst it's a small target and you hit nothing but air.
In a big picture kind of way I don't see how its any different than using a bow, or rifle. Know your limits, stay within them. A bad shot at a Bull Moose 500 yards away is every bit as likely to leave a wounded Moose, as is a 50 yard shot with an arrow from a x-bow or compound.......

That was basically my point, it doesn't matter what the tool is if a person doesn't stay within their limits, which includes knowing what the tool is capable of at X range.
For example. I am very comfortable using my Trad at 20 yards, 30 yards not so much. Don't put enough practise in. While I wouldn't grab it for Whitetails I might consider it for a days walk through the woods for some different small game. At out to 25 yards Im either going to kill it, or hit nothing but air. There isn't much in between.
Powerful enough sling shots with the right shot, are going to have "similar" forces. If aiming for the head/neck its either done or your bruising air. If you do happen to hit the body, likely crushed breast bone/wing. In which case its going nowhere fast and finishing the job would likely take far less time than the recommended 30 -60 minutes waiting for a whitetail to bleed out. Not sure, thats theory but I'll put it this way.
I would rather be hit by a paintball gun at close range ( they can break skin and leave welts) than a good slingshot with a heavy ball.
That is going to do serious hurt.

By the way a 1/2" steel ballbearing has about 8.4 grams or 129.6 grains of weight. Lead is much heavier and is the best....just like birdshot........go figure

Slingshots can be and are very accurate in the hands of a skilled shooter. Slingshots are recognized more as a legitimate sport in Europe, as is hunting with pellet guns. Lots of video on Youtube showing guys with remarkable aim and accuracy.
My cousins and I killed a whack of varmints with them during the summer on the farm. We used to create quit a pile of dead rats and squirrels. We also killed a pile of bull frogs in the pond with the slingshot and then have Aunty do up the legs for dinner.
That guy in the video makes it look very natural and he's not missing very often...there is a commentor on youtube that says :Sums it up nicely..the same principle we used when we got enough money to buy a pellet gun and then the .22.Quote:
the nice thing about shooting for the head, if you miss your target, its hitting either the neck(also an insta kill) or its a miss. if your a real hunter and need a head shot to kill with the weapon your using you will wait until you have such a shot.

The wording of the translation says that after he killed him he cut off his head. The original Hebrew and Greek do not say that. It is written in the old texts so as to mean that the stone crippled goliath so as to lay on the ground at David's mercy. Goliath died when David cut of him head with his own sword. It is a important point that is being made by saying that Goliath was killed by his OWN sword. Not only was he defeated by a "Boy" but that the "boy" David killed Goliath with his own sword. For if a mere child of the people of God could do that to their greatest warrior, what hope did they have against God's chosen people.Quote:

Fast forward to adult hood I really can't see myself using one, certainly not to hunt with. I wouldn't trust my ability or accuracy to do the job but more importantly because my ethics(that weren't in place as a youngster) would prevent me.
We've often seen the thread 'would a 22 be good enough for'..... Sure that little cartridge has disposed of a lot of things But I now come from the camp that says use the proper caliber/weapon for the game we hunt. It's always been my belief that those are the guiding ethics which make us good hunters and demonstrates our respect for the game we hunt.
I'd probably still enjoy using my old slingshot but probably only for plinking....trying to hunt jacks..... guess I'd die of starvation!
What he is referring to is that a slingshot at a stationary target with a 1/4" round ball has less chance of creating a cripple as wingshooting. You hit it and kill it or you miss it, is that not better than putting a dozen pellets into non-critical areas, or worse, into the guts and cause a slow and painful death.Quote:

I'm not hung up on killing rats and squirrels in the least, the thread has mentioned more than just them if I read correctly. I certainly didn't say anything about killing a rat humanely or otherwise either.
If you can't wrap your head around my ethics...then fair enough, they're mine not yours. I'm talking about ethics in a broader sense.
Going back to your statement, I have to say I really disagree. Your conclusion rests that it's either a hit or miss. In reality it could be a miss or a hit somewhere non lethal...say shoulder which means it's definitely not better than a dozen pellets put into non critical areas. TerryM tried to convey this sentiment in his first few posts but his common sense idea seemed to fly over everbody,s head.
In the context of killing vermin, the term 'killing humanely' is an oxymoron. They are killed with malice to eradicate them.

I guess some folk turn a blind eye to the fact that putting out poison to kill rat/mice/squirrels etc, so it dies slowly by bleeding to death is probably not very 'humane', but that doesn't bother their 'ethics' from protecting their property.
The problem with the negative comments on this threat was that they assume that using a slingshot was not accurate and an inefficient way to dispatch of an animal. Both categorical untrue and proved out the poster had absolutely no knowledge (self admitted) of the sport yet felt compelled to pass his judgement on the 'children' on the forum (and most of the world) that do consider it a sport.

You hit the small game animal in the vitals with a slingshot and you will kill it, no question there, this is the same as the 22LR and your shotgun. Different tool for the same job and 100% legal.
Ethics are personal, I personally will not have a problem with using a slingshot on bunnies, 410 for grouse, mouse traps on mice (hardly sporting) and a long bow on deer when I want.
Why would you suggest banning the 22. It's a great little rim fire. My initial reference to this is because we have seen countless times the question in a thread of whether a 22 was good for larger game...we all know it is not.
It's a long way from comparing a 20 guage to a 12 to make a case for a sling shot. As you probably know there are certainly 20 guage loads with a higher pellet count then certain 12's. There 's no argument to be made for banning the 20 in your example. It's not a legal issue, no suggestion was ever made about that. I've never been against the slingshot, I've just questioned it's limitations and one's ability to be that accurate.
Good to see that you can reference your ethics. Reading some other threads(illegal moose shooting) it's clear to see that some of our brethren are badly lacking with ethics.
Ethics are a personal thing, I would never hunt in a way that were illegal, I don't roll that way. I have a problem though with discouraging people who want to try something that is perfectly legal. My take on it is that if you can hit your target 10 times out of 10 that you can then go out and use it for hunting. Hitting a piece of paper is one thing, hitting an animal in the vitals is another. I have a long bow, when I was 16 I wanted to hunt with it. This bow is a 40lb bow, bare minimum for deer in Ontario and I was scolded by a number of bow shop employees about using it and how I had to have a sight, I had to have a 60lb bow and I had to have $50 broadheads. I sharpened by broadheads, I started shooting and within my safe range I was able to hit the vital area of a deer with every single shot without any sight at that range. It was a short range, I was limiting myself to 15 yards because I knew that was as far and I was 100% sure that the arrow would hit the mark and put a deer down quickly. This was also taking into account the lower poundage bow I was shooting and the penetration that it had. To stick with this I put up a tree stand where by the only safe shot without putting my arrow through a pile of trees had a maximum range of about 12 yards, this was down an old bush road. Well, I was not able to get a deer to come down, called it and the buck was staying back about 50 yards behind me in the thick stuff. If I had a high end crossbow I could have been positioned so that I would have had a good shot on that animal but I wanted to hunt with this bow so I limited myself by range and enjoyed every moment being in the bush.Quote:

At least you have a good reason to pick the shotgun. Unlike some that scream about it not being humane but can't really give a reason. I think most( we all know a few that would not) that were going to try hunting with the slingshot would take the time to practice. Same group can be found practicing with what ever they plan to use. Bow, Xbow, rifle, shotgun, slingshot would be practiced.Quote:

The man who taught me most of what I know, has a motto, that I've adopted. "I hunt to kill"
For him and he makes no bones about it, he kills. He also will use the most efficient tool available to him. If he' can choose between a bow and a rifle, he will grab the rifle each and every time.
Assuming one puts the practise in and can hit what they are aiming at.
Why would a sling shot be considered inhumane, but a bow not? In other words Im guessing many in the thread that don't like the idea of using a sling shot against grouse, are probably more than ok using a bow vs Big game. Assuming two good shots.
Sling shot its instant or near.
Bow might be 20 40 minutes bleeding out or drowning in its own blood.
Dont get me wrong, just "saying" that at one time I imagine a lot of hunters might have felt the same about archery, as some do slingshots.
