Im hearing lots about ticks in southern parts of the province and appreantly lyme disease is on the rise. I am planning to travel for fishing during the spring. Would ticks or Lyme disease be a cause of concern or is just the media blowing things out of proportion?
The answer lies somewhere between the extremes. As with all outdoor activities its about risk reduction. If your going to be in an area with ticks take precautions simple as that.
We have hunted the same area in southern Ontario for a number of years now, and last year was the first year ticks were ever seen (By us). Three ticks latched onto two different hunters. We were in the area for 5 days. One hunter had the tick tested and it was in fact the type/kind/species that can carry Lyme disease, but was not infected. Based on that experience we will be taking precautions for ticks...

Just picked up some Ultrashield EX from TSC. Figuring on using it this year for sure. Both me and the dog. Better save than sorry...
Going to go pick some of that Ultrashield EX stuff as well and give it a shot this year. Every time I go Turkey hunting at the farm I end up finding a few ticks on me trying to catch a ride home. Hopefully this stuff keeps them away.
They are thick where I frequent in eastern Ontario. I was diagnosed with Lyme last summer and never saw the tick bite. Worth taking some precautions and doing regular checks.

I used permethrin spray last year 10 days turkey hunting where I had picked up ticks in previous years. No ticks came home with me last year.Quote:

You might want to read the MSDS sheet on this product especially the part where it says not to get it on your skin.
The Grand View Outdoors website just had a major article (excerpt below) posted on it about tick problems.
Lyme gets all the news, but there is another disease that the tics carry called Powassan Virus that is even worse that Lyme disease.
Powassan attacks its victims head on — literally, in the brain, causing it to swell. It’s deadly in about 10 percent of the cases that are recorded,
and if you are able to recover, there’s a 50 percent chance that you’ll have permanent neurological damage.
According to a release by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health(MDPH), symptoms usually start becoming noticeable one week to one month after the bite of an infected tick.
Use bug sprays, and check everyone carefully after each outing!!

She uses a vet spray, I have used a higher concentration and watered it down in a spray water bottle I also found that taking 300mg of B1 in the morning and evening seems to inhibit them too.

Word of warning to those that are considering this stuff. IMO, I don't know what's worse, the Ultrashield citronella smell or the ticks LOL. I tried this on my hunting clothes a while ago and the citronella smell was unbearable. My buddies stayed away from me (as well as the ticks LOL) because it was so strong. It took me 6 washes to get the smell out on my clothes. I really wish they made it unscented like the sawyers stuff.Quote:

how does Off Deep wood spray do against ticks ? 25% DEET.

Just be aware before you put it on your hunting stuff. Wish they would make the Sawyer's spray available in Canada, that is the best as it is completely unscented.
You can get sprays with the same content, I could only find it in twice the concentration to what they use on clothes so I watered it down and used a spray bottle from the dollar, the first post I made this year on here showed someone using a version they got in Canada.Quote:

I use it all the time, but the trick with it is to let the sprayed items air outside for a few hours after spraying. I have been doing this w the Ultra Shield for the last 3 years, and always let everything air out outside after spraying...the citronella odour seems to mostly go away after 3-4 hours outside, and I have never been really bothered by it once it airs out.Quote:

Bought a bottle a couple of weeks ago in Kemptville. Last bottle on the shelf. Not cheap. $30 at TSC. Worth the investment though as a survey done in my neighbourhood revealed that 50% of the ticks carry Lyme disease. So, doing some gardening today both wife and I sprayed our pant legs. I can confirm the initial strong lemon scent but my wife said she did not mind. I will be using it this upcoming turkey hunt for sure.
If not for this group I never would have known about this product.
I use it and it seems to work. I spray the ground around where I'm sitting as I don't like that stuff on me. I have seen it take the varnish off a gun stock.Quote:

I wear their stuff from May(this year maybe earlier)til i stop going into the bush at the end of the spring.
Then use it till early-mid Sept.again.
Their stuff is really high quality.
