I guess , I'm starting earlier then thought. My cousin caught 2 beavers today,so I might as well bait. I still have three freezers full of Beavers from last year. I want them all gone by the fall.
Still lots of snow in the woods. Some hunters/ guides have set a few baits ,others didn't fare as well.
3 freezers full. OMG... I know they can take up a lot of room but that's a treasure lode of prime bear bait you have there. I take it you expect to get lots more over the summer. If I had some I would sure be saving it for prime season.
I've never been big on meat as a bait around here except for my initial call bait. Then one year a trapper friend asked me if I wanted some goose carcasses from the morning shoot. Sure, I say, I'm game to try. Well, I'll just say that bears love geese ;), if you can add them to your fall bait site you should try it. The cubs just love playing with them too it seems. One spot I used them I followed the trail of feathers etc over a hundred yards away across a ditch to a neighboring field. Even the rope and pieces of ripped up feed bag lol.
Never did figure out how momma bear got that knot undone. It was a good fifteen feet away tied to a decent tree and the bait was for sure out of reach. Sure wish I had that on video.

The moose hunt is the last week of September and the butcher gives me all the scraps,I can take. He's cutting for a month and the Bears appear to like moose,lol. One year,I did try some ducks and geese. The fussy bear wouldn't touch them, maybe I 'll try again in the future.
I' not really sure of the number of beaver/ year,but expect to get 40-50 beavers.
Two more huge beavers today and Sterline set 4 more traps. I like to tye a wire and chain the beavers before freezing them. Boys, my clothes smell like beaver caster,lol.
Would any bear hunters in the Kitchener area, be interested in waste French fries , food waste from a food truck , starting up May 24 . I will watch for replies. old243
Great offer, old 243. I used the 5 gallon buckets from the oil and fill with food and throw in the freezer. Load and go. The Bears here like chicken and chips.

So how is NB treating you. Probably won't be down again this year to run the Bartholomew. Have you tried fishing there yet or the Cains?
Last year was crazy,my mother needed 24 hour care and I didn't get any help from my brother. This year my dog wakes me about every 2 hours to go out side. She can't hold her water. I baited a bit last year but never hunted. I'm almost out of meat, so I 'll take a spring bear. The good think about being 65 in New Brunswick is all hunting licences are 1/2 price.
My brother is taking me out salmon and bass fishing this year.
... why not eat the beavers ?

Man Am I sore. Put out the cam, 5 beavers and 15 gallons of oil.Their's about a foot of snow in the woods . The s x s took me right to the bait. It really early in my area but their's food when the Bears arrive.

Lol,went to check the bait and the beavers were gone. The sd card was bad.
Still no action at my bait. I sprayed vanilla on trees for about 300 yds and set up a burn with bacon grease and a tea light at bait. So I guess now it's a waiting game
Try putting out a stink bait high in a tree. I bait near rivers,their the bear high ways and I dig a hole and put out lard. The Bears track the scent to the river and other Bears follow it to my baits. Good luck udderbrudder. A lot of the baiters here are flooded out and it's really early. A few good Bears have been shot and one super trophy.It weigh in at 672 pounds.
We are heading up to Burk's Falls Thursday for a few days to set up baits, most of our group are farmers so we will not return for a few weeks to hunt provided they can get the crops in the field.
After the spring season,I quit baiting for a week ( July ) and all the big ones leave and I put out less food and feed the sows,Cubs and young bears.

Wow. 672 lbs. Must have been a massive bear. Can you elaborate on the lard in a hole. Been trying to get my hands on some beaver but no luck. What's your preference for stink bait? And good.luck with the 400 lb guy. He's a beauty
Their's two types of oil. Canola is a liquid which is good to put on stuff, bread, wheat corn etc. The Chinese restaurant used lard instead of canola and when it's cold it gets hard and the Bears will eat this like candy and when it heats up they drink it . The older Bears know what it is and some of the younger Bears have no idea what it is. It's good because their's always food for the old ones and they keep coming back.
Stink bait musk rats is the best, but hard to get. I'm making some new stink baits for the new sites and I'm using fish in 5 gallon buckets . I tie a heavy weight on the end of a rope and get it as high in a tree as I can. Lower it to the ground, drill holes in the bucket and hoist it up and tie it off. I don't think I need it, but over kill is good. A guy brings guts and other fish, so later I'll find out what type of fish they like to eat for future reference.
Lol,I have a guy coming and I'm saving the bear for him. I'll hunt mid June.

I'm a bit disappointed. Still no action at my bait. I bought some anise seed and mixed it with anise oil in a homemade burn (cans with tea lights).
I've sprayed anise and vanilla for hundreds of yards and my barrel contains dog food, corn/grain, molasses, 2 gallons used fryer oil, popcorn, a pound of butter and some lard. What else if anything can I do. I'm reading about other baits getting bears regularly now but not mine.
A stink bait, my new baits haven't been hit yet. It's been a whole week. The first two years it took a huge bear about 6 weeks to find my baits and never left.
You might have to open a new bait. I like baits near a river.

June is the best time to hunt,the rut is in full swing.
I'm gonna try to get down to the river after work and catch some Chubb and see if that works. I haven't been able to find any beaver so fish will have to do. Otherwise I'm gonna give up on it. BTW nice pics Greenhorn. Seeing that on cam would get me excited
Check with the local grocery store. Tell him your a bear hunter and would like out dated meats, fish and bread and pastry. One year, I got lots of salmon and hung them in a tree on a new bait. The bear torn that apart.Sardines, Lobster shells or muscles smell pretty good too. Good luck.
My boys and I got into the Crappie yesterday so I froze the scraps, they will be a welcome addition to my bait sites!
A fisherman is bring me his scraps every day as well as fish he doesn't use. The other day the cat fish were still alive. Never tried them, might. Good luck.

One new spot is hammered and a number of Bears at the other site. The old cameras are not telling the truth,lol. The third, a very big shy boar. I baited him in this spot 2014 then 1/2 a mile away in 15 and 16. Never got him on camera. First thing he does is attack the camera. One year he pulled my cable lock off,but drop it by the oil pit,lol. Have videos but to busy .
I just came back from an awesome hunt guided by Brent and took video on the bear I took.
Bear was taken by my Tikka T3 300wm with winchester 180 gr soft point at around 40 yards, he ran about 20 yards and start moaning.
I have learn a lot in bear hunting from Brent and I highly recommend anyone who is interested should contact Brent especially if you never hunt bear before as they are very intelligent animal and you really need to know what you are doing before you get a chance to get them show up in front of you.
A big kudo to Brent and thank you very much for all your's and Cameron's hard work to help me to bag this nice boar.

Yeah, that's what I figured because he purposely climb over the log to sniff guess he already smell my scent but Brent set me up with an ozonic downwind and fool the boar.
Bears are very smart animal has very sensitive nose and you can see clearly in the video he licks his nose several times already trying to smell better and I decided to take him before he took off.
From this trip I have learn a lot from Brent and I thought I was a fairly good hunter (been hunter deers for almost two decades) but hunting bear is a totally different experience because you are hunt one of the biggest predator in North America.

Brought this back up because some one was asking about a hoist. The top section was free floating but a regular bolt broke ( you can see the hole where pin should have been) . I had the whole drilled larger to take a harden pin for a hitch. Works like a charm and saves a lot of work. It’s a lot heavier then what their selling.
