Well one of the wmu has only one moose tag this year, can you guess which one. I really would like to know what they are thinking? Everyone can still get a calf though. Why not just close the moose hunt?

They are thinking that they want the money we provide by buying the licences.
Can you imagine how many will apply and how much revenue this One Moose will generate. Only under the Liberals.

The Liberals have been screwing us for years, raising license fees every year and now this? They just want to stop hunting all together.
WMU 47. Yes it is a joke.
Don't know how reliable this is, but here is a response from a friend of mine.
If the MNR doesn't allot 1 tag they have to close the season and that means that even natives can be charged if the season is closed.
He says he got the information from some low people in high places.
Is there a reservation around Restoule?
Next you will be telling us the Conservatives were all about dropping fee,s . We only just got back the Spring Bear hunt thanks to the anti hunting Liberals. You remember the hunt the Con,s took away without scientific evidence.
Not to mention all the associated costs of the bear Watch program,s and nuisance bear removal costs.
Sorry to bring you back to reality and hard facts.
Try again Gilroy, it was one of your tree hugging Liberals Robert Schad who extorted the PCs into cancelling the Spring Bear Hunt through his later to be found illegal charity threatening a smear campaign just prior to an election. I notice the Liberals were oh so quick to reinstate the hunt - only when their popularity was falling. Go stick your head back in the sand!
An entire Government extorted by a single individual, probably tells you more about the guts Mr Harris did not show to save a few seats. The Con,s made a concise decision based on politics to the detriment of all hunters and Northern Tourists operators.I,am always glad to remind readers of Mr Harris legacy
costs to taxpayers, Amalgamation and downloading onto Municipalities and Townships, a costly disaster, the initial selling of Ontario hydro, MPAC killing us with high property taxes,407 Highway give away to private interests......
Sorry one of our trucks hit a moose in 47 last night...guess there will be no bull tags this year.:joker:
Who's Government was better for Ontario Dalton/Whynn Liberals vs Harris. Who destroyed Ontario and waster over 200 Billion on squat. Yes Harris bought votes but the Liberals are buying votes and catering to who ever will give them money.
Darn I brought Politics into this.;)
It's not about managing resources it's about managing financial intake got to balance the budget. Yeah I believe that one too.
Pardon my ignorance, but how the hell does it make sense to keep calf hunts open when they're having to restrict the tags for adults? (presumably due to low numbers). Wouldn't letting more calves mature help the population in that wmu...
The idea behind it (right or wrong) is that calves are harder to locate than the adults.
Also, many calves will be lost to winter mortality anyway.
Mostly its just to allow MNRF to sell more moose tags.
But...try to find anywhere else in North America where a big game management policy includes taking young-of-the-year
where adults are protected.
That should tell you something about what big game managers outside of Ontario.
I'm certainly not in the know, but I think taking the young and restricting the adults makes sense to me. As stated calf are harder to find, and how many don't make the winter anyway. It never bothers me to shoot a fawn if I have to as I figure I don't effect the herd at all that way, on think is the freeze suffers.
My camp's WMU 47 moose hunt for many years always consisted of a full camp (18 hunters, mix of young and old)) who always filled their single adult tag. That's all we wanted, 1 tag for the group.
Since they slashed the tags in 2014, its been down to 6 or 7 of the old guys who've yet to see or shoot a calf.
Nonetheless, outside of the 1 week moose season, we're still seeing as many moose (bulls, cows, calves) as we ever have. Even in the "old days" it was rare to see a calf.
I was born and raised in Loring ( WMU # 47 ) and our gang never shot calves hoping it would help the herd and now the MNR rewards us with one bull tag for the whole unit. Unfortunately now a lot of camps will shoot the calves .
We have always shot Calves, and there are just as many Moose where we hunt, then there ever was.
