I'm looking for someone that owns at least a few acres of land somewhere north of Toronto. I'd like to do some target shooting without having to drive two hours north. Would anyone who owns a property in the area be alright if I used their land for target shooting? I'd give you a pack of beer or some other gift as a thank you or you could participate if you'd like. Let me know if you are interested.
An acre is not that much to shoot on.....and it might be more productive without the beer.....

Look's like steel's post is a "one and done" sort of thing...but...a long time ago, I didn't know where to turn either, and didn't have the resources to join a club. A couple of tips steel...if you ever come back to this site. :)
1. Go knock on doors, but before you do..check the discharge laws in the area you plan on scouting. I mention that because "1 hour from Toronto" really leaves VERY few places you can shoot legally that I'm aware of.
2. Leave alcohol out of the equation altogether at the start. Showing up with it leaves the wrong impression, as does assuming a farmer might drink. Sounds like you're well-meaning and that's simply an example of what you're prepared to offer, but, figure-out how he/she ticks when you're chatting with them and then decide if a case of beer, bottle of wine, or even some goodies from a bakery would be appropriate. In my experience, it can matter more what the farmer's wife thinks of you!
I think the further you get from Toronto, the better-off you'll be too. By "better-off"...I mean the more success you'll have. Avoid farms that are very flat, have neighboring farms (and farm houses) nearby. It's one thing if a farmer is willing to say yes to using their property, but they won't say "yes" on their neighbor's behalf. (if the neighbor is close enough to be bothered by the sound, or idea of a shooter being there)
Lots of other stuff I've learned over the years, but do your homework, be respectful, leave things better than you find them, and don't assume that a farmer saying "yes" means you can bring an SKS and a pile of friends and blast all day, or, shoot clays and all the mess that brings. WAY easier to get access if it's a 22 you plan on using, can indicate what day you're likely to show up, how long you're likely to stay, etc.

On a side note, you guys have major issues if you think having a beer while shooting some paper is a sin, no difference than having a cup of coffee. Just spent over 20 days in Europe and you can enjoy a glass of alcohol pretty much anywhere and at anytime without feeling like drunk.

That's for sure. All those years ago at that farm got me into this sport. We would target shoot and have couple beers and a BBQ! Not pissed drunk shooting into the sky like cowboys hahaha. Silverdale is not far from Toronto. 1.5 hour drive for $20 bucks entry fee. Cheaper than beer.

thats the unfortunate cirsumstance behind personal responsibiliy. were all adults and SHOULD know what we can and cant handle and should be able to make common sense decisions even if you have a beer or two. Ive seen people on allergy medication more screwed up than from alcohol. It doesnt matter what sport event or thing...there are those who cant handle havinh a few barley pops no matter what they do. anyways another thread derailed....ahhh

I would of woken him up by discharging his firearm ( in a safe manner of course ) and sent him home when he sobered up. Having a beer or 2 while on watch will not hurt anybody but passing out drunk would not be tolerated by any of the guys I hunt with.Quote:

Allowing alcohol consumption while operating firearms is irresponsible. Outdoorsmen/shooters have a hard enough time projecting a good public image thanks to all the anti-hunting/firearm groups out there. Helping these groups by fueling the image that firearm owners are irresponsible enough to operate firearms while consuming a known substance which lowers reaction times isn't any firearm owner should be doing. People see you operating firearms while drinking don't know if that is your first, third or tenth drink. We, as a group, are under the public's good graces to own firearms. We need to show the public we deserve our privileges or else they will take them away.Quote:

I have to say that the reading comprehension of some people needs improvement. The OP wants to offer thanks to anyone that let's him shoot on their property - "I'd give you a pack of beer or some other gift as a thank you or you could participate if you'd like". Never said anything about a drinking party while they were shooting, but could of used better judgement when naming the thread. I've thanked more than one land owner with a bottle for letting me hunt their property.
