Toronto police E-T-F members shoot bear

Killed without provocation...racially profiled just because he was big, black and scary..ohh and a bear. :)

Officers began tweeting out reports of a 300-pound bear sighted in the Tapscott Road and Finch Avenue East area at 10:30 p.m.

Police are warning the public to stay away from the area and not to approach the animal. Officers are currently searching the area.

The Toronto Zoo, which is located less than four kilometres from where the animal is alleged to have been seen, told police they are not missing any bears.

He said E-T-F officers shot the bear (in the Middlefield and McCowan Road area) after animal control officials advised police that they were not equipped to deal with the potentially dangerous situation.

There were no reports of any people or pets being injured.

Police had no immediate information about where the bear came from, its gender, or whether a post-mortem examination would be performed to try to determine if it was suffering from any abnormalities.

i live in the rouge valley and that bear was around my house and i have no doubt there will be more with the park extending further north all the time its giving all animals the highway they need to get down south

The police were in a catch 22 position, "Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't " if they had just ignored it and someone got hurt even by their own stupidity, people would have complained. So to avoid any mishaps with the bear , they killed it, and someone will still complain.

just shows you how mismanaged the mnrf is ARE YOU LISTENING MINISTER . seen the ministry today going by in boat on sturgeon lake they could not answer bear call they were getting gas for boat yesterday

Why is every bear in the GTA so quickly labelled "rogue" and unceremoniously SHOT. I guess all the northern communities have friendly bears. Why isn't the Bear Wise Program tried in the GTA? I think they wrote it but it only applies to others.

They aren't correct .... or even rational in my opinion BUT you have to realize the buy meat from a grocery store where no animals were harmed are out there. Educate them if they want to listen, ignore them if they won't and make fun of them if they won't shut up! If you hear of the selling souvenir bear claw necklaces net me know .. :-) I would like to go bear hunting myself sometime but I know my wife won't want the meat and time is another issue.... maybe I will watch for them in my backyard.

Hopefully this is the first of many more bear sighting in Toronto. I hope they become as common as raccoons and create massive damage to people's property.

Then they will know what people in Sudbury and neighbouring areas have had to deal with since spring hunt was cancelled.

Grew up in the late fifties on 20 acres north of finch, east of 48. Even though it was a Crown Game Preserve, I had more game in our back yard than I do here in Bancroft. Jack rabbits, fox, coyotes, and deer, but no bear.

You got to my comment before I did. You have spoken the truth. It is not an issue, and has not been an issue for folks living in northern Ontario. This is no different than the bear that was shot in Newmarket two years ago. It is my belief that only once the bear population started moving south to the GTA was it important to re-establish the spring hunt. Sadly the real reason that the hunt is needed is to reduce predation by bears on moose calves (especially at this time of year)

LOL I would normally agree but we must remember what party brought about the original demise of the Spring Bear Hunt. At the time it my not have been seen as a big deal to most hunters but now that the Moose heard has collapsed we have to wonder how many calf,s were taken by bears during that time period.

Yep,I agree. Newborn Moose calves and Deer fawns are easy pickin's for hungry Bruins coming out of hibernation. Couple that with increased Wolf/Coyote "protected" townships and "Calves only" hunts due to adult moose tag reductions and we have the perfect storm. The inmates are definitely running the OMNRF asylum.
