Some of you guys might not appreciate this because your too young to know that at one time drive in movies were a big thing back in the 50s - you parked your car in a big field that had a big screen and a speaker that you could hook onto the drivers side window - you could sit real close to your girl because in those days all the car seats were bench seats - both in the front and back - well anyway this one summer evening I'm sitting next to my girl Kate - who at the time I thought was special - and my buddy Clarence (we called him grubby) was in the back with his girl -
We're watching a movie with Garry Cooper - he is trying to rescue some dame from being burned at the stake by some Huron Indians - when all of a sudden this horrific smell starts to fill the car - it was the most terrible thing that I ever smelled in my life time - and I've been on this earth a real long time - there aren't any words that could describe the smell - nobody said anything but we were all wondering who did such a unspeakable thing - then Grubby opens his mouth and says - Joe what did you do? - that SOB -
Now I know that I didn't do it and I couldn't even imagine that a girl could muster up such a weapon of mass destruction so I figured that Grubby did it and was trying to lay the blame on me - I could have killed him - well just as I'm ready to pass out I reach over and roll down the driver's side window - the others somehow got their windows down before kneeling over - finally the summer night breeze pushes the fart out into the night air and which I'm sure contributed big time to global warming - nobody said anything for a long time - the evening was ruined - we had thought of going for pizza after the movie but no one had any appetite after the near death experience - my 48 Plymouth never smelled the same after that night
A couple days later I bumped into Grubby at a favorite watering hole - I asked him to tell me the truth - did he drop that bomb at the drive in last Saturday night - he swore up and down that he didn't do it - he really thought it was me - I believed him because knowing him - he would brag about being able to do something like that - so then it was one of the girls - to this day I just can't get over the thought that Kate - such a sweet. innocent and lovely girl could have drop the MOAF -
